I like the art direction in this movie. Yeah they filtered out the people who would cut their ear off. But they also lost the kind of person who would paint Starry Night

This movie changed my life. I saw it as a kid and it really inspired me to always try and overcome perceived limitations and go beyond what might seem possible. The soundtrack is so beautiful and inspiring too. Such a powerful film

Good video, I did have a correction (spoilers).Only that fate had nothing to do with Jerome's fateful day 'accident'. He intentionally stepped out in front of a car. And was upset it only paralyzed him instead of killing him. As it was intended to show how wrong the predetermined fates of those with highly modified genes are. He was obviously suicidal regardless of highly eugenic efforts on his conception. The altruism he shows to Vincent especially right at the end was his last effort for his body to carry on a dream, Vincents dream, then he ends his life in the incinerator. Leaving us to think that discrimination is never right and truly the most valuable thing is to dream.

If they were able to program Jerome so exquisitely, sure they would have included the gene responsible for overcoming the 2nd place and trying harder next time. Rather than "silver medal=suicidal " gene, so to speak :)

@@vsirrmk Did you not notice the point of the film? The director is literally cleared for murder for "not having a violent bone in his body", and yet he still killed someone. The whole point was that genetics can not determine what someone shall or shall not do. Jerome was raised his entire life to think that he was the best, that he was going to succeed, that the first place belonged to him. And then, when he gets to the finish line, he falls just short. Chances are, he couldn't try again, especially when newer genetic babies are being created every year who could have even better genes and who would be younger than him. He felt his life was completely over, a failure who couldn't receive what he was owed. That disappointment, that self hatred, that feeling of hopelessness, those are things you cannot genetically modify out of somebody without created a fleshy automaton.

I can tell you I grew up on Welfare. Had an abusive sister and mother. No father (Well, he wasn't in my life). I graduated high school at 16, ended up in Juvenile hall twice due to my sisters lies. Group homes, you name it. Joined the Army at 17. 4th day in was Sept 11th, 2001. I was field artillery fire direction specialist. I still became a computer engineer. So I can tell you how you're born isn't how you should be judged. Become who you're meant to be. Not everyone gets that opportunity, I'm lucky for that. I know that.

It is the problem of society that if your family is dysfunctional like that and you as a child get a bad impact on your personality because of that. Therefore genetically inferior and poor people should never have kids. The greatest Argument for that might be you and your superficial comment.

I don't think this movie should really be percieved as a take on determinism. Simply because nothing can actually prove or refute existence of such thing. What we should take away from Gattaca is that no matter how illusive and scary your chances to succed might seem, if there is any possibility it could work, you can make a choice and succeed against all the odds. A man against not just society, but his own nature, too. He didn't forsake his dream and put everything in that 1% chance. It's romantic and fascinating

my take on the movie is that you should be skeptical of does genetic engineering technology. as the more one think about it doesn't make sense.

I relate to Gattaca. Us short men are statistically less likely to be picked for a job, and less likely to get a promoted to a leadership position. It's as if I'm an invalid.

a better story would be if ppl were genetically engineered to reduce or eliminate any advantageous traits. then instead of the narrative being how do i fairly compete with those whom are superior, it becomes why should i be limited

We just lived through this ‘genetic discrimination’ , when we ‘unpersoned’ the UNJABBED , due to a perceived ( though debatable ) fitness benefit of a very narrow and specific physiological human characteristic: IMMUNE FUNCTION . And millions of citizens were quite comfortable with participating in this artificial bias and ancestral behaviour of ‘shunning’ . Gattaca is not in our future ; it’s here now 👍🙏

Which points to the government as a highly likely cause in future genetic discrimination. Governments have already set precedents for this, just look at history. This man reveals his leftist bias when he states corporations as the sole aggressors and government as the sole potential savior. The flaws in corporations are present in governments and vice versa. The corporation seeks the ideal worker/customer, and the government seeks the ideal citizen. We should be wary of 'saviors' and take our lives into our own hands, like Gattaca's protagonist. We may fail, but the destination is not everything.

"I'm not quite convinced that I'm right..." - I understand what you're saying! I hadn't looked at it in the way you talk about, which is surprising (to me) because I have thought about questions of free will vs. determinism. I haven't thought about it well enough to truly convince myself, however I err on the side of thinking that....oh....damn it...I don't know. However...if part of my journey into a successful, apparently meaningful future is that I was inspired by the idea of the triumph of human spirit by this wonderful movie, then I'm glad that I watched it. Breaks my heart even to think about the ending, and I'd recommend it to anyone to watch, think about, and discuss at length. Thanks for your upload.

I don't think this film is set in the future. I think it's a more technologically advanced past. The fashions, the style of the cars and architecture, the bigotry (it's very easy to imagine mid-20th-century racists adopting a similar prejudice against "imperfect" humans of any race). I think it's set in a version of the 50s where we had much more advanced technology than we have even today but are still held back by "racism", or in this case, "geneticism"

human biology meaning gene enhence engenering manipulation from the get go is one thing...human defect shortcoming again negative gene is another thing....its gene angainst spirit...anton has all the genetic baggage to suceed but doesnt....we he plays blood brothers hes scared to cut himself...and then again when he swims vs vincent he loses because gene doesnt mean that spirit courage determination and most of will can overcom the hand we were dealth at birth

I'll go into most of the questions you brought up despite the fact I agreed with your conclusion. Although I'd like to add that Jerome entering Vincent's life wasn't an accident, he was trying to kill himself. It wasn't a chaotic event of randomness in their world but just another consequence of society. Government intervention in the future will be mandatory for issues like this. Sadly, it's hard to say if we will ever have a government trustworthy enough to warrant the power a socialistic society would require. But only a socialistic country can tackle issues like this in a healthy manner. Otherwise, the rich would be incentified to own genetic superiority over the poor forever - we do it already with education, we will do it again with genes. The law regarding genetic engineering will not stop it at all. People, regardless of the law, will seek advantages in whatever they value. Steroids are illegal today and they even come with great health risks - genetic engineering will not share a fraction of those risks but will provide endless more benefits. It will be a foolish choice for anyone to not take. Your question regarding the marketability of invalids and government intervention is a valuable one. That's why I think socialism is the future just as Marx predicted. After all, regardless of genes, automation will make us all invalids over time. Genetic engineering only highlights that inevitability. I define morality as the goal in optimizing the well-being versus suffering ratio of all sentient creatures, with a preference for humans. An action is more moral if it increases that ratio. Would genetic engineering, in isolation, increase morality by that definition? Yes, humans will live healthier more productive lives. How we as a society treat each other due to genetic engineering cannot be isolated to genetic engineering as every other variable plays a part. Over the long term, everyone will be genetically engineered anyway. Also, society will over time become more homogenous even if we don't use genetic engineering. Even without genetic engineering, we will all end up blending together to look somewhat Asian many years from now. The evidence, physics and neuroscience mostly, suggests free will does not exist and we live in a, practically speaking, deterministic universe. The evidence is concrete enough for me to believe that free would still not exist in an even far greater randomized universe.

Sonst würden die Reichen dazu angehalten, für immer die genetische Überlegenheit über die Armen zu besitzen . wir sind jetzt im 2021. sprich. klaus schwab great reset 2030. schauen sie die heutige politik an. es kommt zur sozialistischen diktatur. angeführt von den mächtigsten alten säcken. eine verführung . sie haben sich getäuscht. wie so viele grüne und ehrliche sozial demokraten. der mittelstand wird ausradiert.
