I bought a Marantz 2270 along with a set of JBL L100s back in 1974 for my college graduation and still have them today. Last month I added a pair of ESS AMT 1A floor speakers from back in the same era. I believe these 2 types of speakers are among the best ever made.

Great job. Thanks for doing it the right way. Most just play the unit and expect our cellphone speakers to magically sound like a set of JBL l100s. Great job. Peace.

I'm a big fan of coloured backlighting and the blue looks awesome on this receiver you did a really good job, if you ever find an LED illuminates in too narrow a field you can always use an abrasive and remove the clear surface to create a more even distribution.

Nice work! I have a Kenwood 5400 in pristine shape that I got for 10 bucks at an estate sale along with a nice pair of Advent speakers. I have a Technics system that I bought new in 1977. I wanted to start using it again in a sun-room and so wired it all up, etc. etc. It all works but nothing has ever been done to it. So the tape deck needs new belts, the tuner is scratchy, the amp is scratchy and the equalizer is okay. I started looking on eBay for answers. Instead of trying to refurbish the old Technics I started off by buying a couple of Axiom speakers for a fair price. Nice. Then I found a refurbished Marantz SD1000 tape deck. Very nice. Then a couple weeks after that I found a Marantz 2238B for a fair price that is drop dead gorgeous! I have never heard music through any equipment that is so enchanting as this. I am in heaven now encapsulated in my sun-room. EBay has provided the marketplace for this.

The best of Marantz. I think the Marantz 2225 was the best and most beautiful (without that exaggeration of buttons) model already developed until today. Its sound is soft and pleasant. I have 3 classic receivers. A Kenwood KR-9600, Marantz 2650 B, and Pioneer SX-1250. I purchased the KR-9600 in May 1977 from Illinois Audio. It costs $486.00. Two weeks pay for me back in those days. The Marantz and Pioneer were given to me in the early 2000's. The owner was taking them to the dump. He didn't want the stuff. I had room in my house and got that stuff free along with Marantz EQs, a Dolby noise rejection unit and several other pieces. Also I bought a Sony ES DAT unit (ES87) and 2 Sony TA-80 amps while in Japan at AAFES. It all still works. I'll keep it I guess.

@Dave...Hi. Thanks for sharing your excellent story. When I was a kid I bought a few small things from Illinois Audio. I remember their small ads in Stereo Review. I would circle their number on the Reader Service Card and get their Xerox'd catalog in the mail. I ordered Pioneer headphones and a Shure M91ED from them. All your receivers are awesome. I like the Kenwood KR-9600. I once had the smaller KR-7600 and i loved it. I cant believe the owner of the Marantz and Pioneer was going to the dump with those.....but then again...back in 2000 most people prolly didnt realize the value. Anyways...I enjoy these stories.....Thanks !!!

Love the Marantz older 2200 series line of receivers. I started with the 2220 and now I have the 2230. These are very close to a tube sound! Other mid 70's and 80's receivers never sounded as good as the 2200 series marantz amplifiers. I also love the tone controls, the new stuff are crap! Recordings are different, TT's are different and the cartridges and preamps and speakers and your room are all different and will change the sound quality, so you will need tone controls. So you audiophiles can stop the tube rolling and cable rolling and carrtridge rolling. Wakeup!

I recently rebuilt a 2238B and found that Marantz was a little sneaky and knew how to cut costs without affecting perception of quality: The aluminum knobs and buttons are not solid aluminum, they are thin shells with plastic inside, though they are quite convincing. Also, the gyro-touch tuning wheel isn't solid aluminum either! It's an aluminum shell covering a solid chunk of pot metal.
@gattigail8 жыл бұрын
Yes...I have noticed that too about the knobs. I've realized it pretty common on vintage stereos from that timeline.

You just need to use the 200mA lamps. The thing is almost 50 years old. The plastic is melted from people putting anything they got their hands on over the years. I've seen 6.3 300mA and larger installed. Bigger lamps more heat, melted plastic. My 2285B plastic melting has stopped with 200mA lamps. And it looks like factory again! I got them off eBay from a user called Tech_HiFi.

gattigail , I absolutely love the stereo equipment of the 70s & 80s. I had so much of it during my years growing up in the 60s & 70s. They truly don't make equipment like this anymore no matter what the cost !!!!!!! just like cars& trucks !!!!!!! It is an absolute work of art and I really mean that!!! I could just spend hours looking at it !!! I know that may seem a bit funny but if your my age ( 52 ) then you can understand what I'm saying. I would even trade and or buy a stereo receiver like this even a pioneer. I have a Harmon/Karden 4.1 stereo receiver now that puts out 120 watts RMS PER 4 CHANNELS with a subwoofer output but as good as it is and expensive $450.00 I would trade it in a second and even some cash for a work of art like the one you have. It's the kind of thing that a person should put in their living will, for real to make sure it has a good home with someone that will Charis, respect, and take care of it forever !! For God's sake don't let go of it unless you would consider selling it for some reason. A stereo receiver like that, a good quality phono, and some good ole fashioned Cerwin Vegas with 12 inch woofers, now that is the absolute epitome of Music enjoyment !!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!!!!😁😎 take care my friend and please keep up the good work, I'm gonna watch this video again and again and drop a little before I go to bed, lol. God bless !!!!!!!!!!!!!

gattigail , p.s., does it have a tape monitor because I have a vintage ADC EQUILIZER SPECTRUM ANALYZER that I run thru my Harmon/Karden "Tape Loop ", it's another reason why I selected my particular stereo receiver besides the quality and " High Current AMP design, it's the closest thing now a days that I could find as far as equipment but certainly not Aesthetics or the way it looks for sure because the older stuff wins hands down.

I just plugged my (same) amp in, which has sat in my closet for about 8 years. Never played it till today, however, only using a headphone..(AKG K701Ref) Hope the amp works on the speakers, but looks like I'll need to find some kind of adapter to change the ends of my banana plug cords back to RCA. Weird that it seems to have no problems related to caps. (Yet) I thought I would need a voltage regular ....Have a feeling that when I recharge up my dormant Ipods and plug them in I'll find out what this baby can do. Control knobs don't have any noise..What do you do about dust maintainence?

I have the 2285 model. It could use some new lamps. I've cleaned the switches with TV tuner cleaner but still have some scratchiness in the audio when I wiggle switches.. Any suggestions on curing that?
@gattigail6 жыл бұрын
Hi. That 2285 you have is an excellent receiver. Buy the electronics spray cleaner called Deoxit. They also make a spray with a little lube in it called Deoxit Fader-Lube. I use both. That's the cleaner that all the audio enthusiasts and most technicians use. Its supposed to be one of the best contact cleaners and lube. After you get the Deoxit sprayed into the tiny holes of the pots, switches etc , rotate and actuate many times to penetrate. You may have to apply more than once if it is a very dirty pot/switch. Hope this helps.

How are the new lamps holding out?

I had actually replaced the LEDs in this video with the "warm white" LEDs which are a big improvement....but still not as natural as incandescent. The LEDs in the video are too striking / intense in my opinion.

Don't agree on the LEDs, prefer the original lights and color. But beautiful resto on an excellent unit. Think this was 2 down from the top... 2500, 2285b, 2265b... but I could be off on that. Nice job.

I agree with you. I really dont like the LEDs either. Too sterile. No warmth. Not original. Thanks for stopping by !!
@stellanti8 жыл бұрын
I assume you used the "cool blue" LEDs rather than the "white" LEDs... is that correct? Other than the 7 bulbs, were there any others that you changed to LED?
@gattigail8 жыл бұрын
Actually I used "white" LEDs. that have a yellow lens. Obviously not yellow enough to give it the incandescent look. I only replaced the dial and meter lamps.

Is there an LED that looks like the old amber/incandescent bulbs?
@gattigail8 жыл бұрын
I wish there was. These are yellow LEDs....but still not amber enough to look incandescent.

There are RGB LEDs that can produce any color in the spectrum.

Well it is about the same blue of the Pioneer fluoroscan line now. I think it looks great, but I bet some Marantz fans will call it blasphemy :p

What does a descent Marantz receiver cost? I know it can vary based on model. I would love to pick up a vintage unit, but don't know where to start. Also, how hard is it to add bluetooth for modern connections?
@gattigail7 жыл бұрын
I don't have Bluetooth so I'm not sure how you would hook it up to a vintage receiver. I do however use the Google Chromecast Audio with my vintage integrated amps for internet radio. You can start looking for vintage audio on your local Craigslist, Ebay, garage sales etc. Check out the vintage audio forum "audiokarma". Lots and lots of information there! Have fun and thanks!!

Wich one should i buy 2265b or 2250b?
@gattigail4 жыл бұрын
Both are nice...but I'm leaning towards the 2250b as a nicer made receiver. I have both.

I like what u have done with the led lights. I would have used green rather than blue just personal tastes. Blue degrades your night vision, red and green do not. Not a big deal.

I had one of the 2285B, the model just above this, cheap $, appx, 1990...a 2220, new in 1977, among several other vintage gear over the years.......When I had my 2220, I went to a showroom & saw these versions, 1978?......Perhaps the easiest mistake with these is putting them into the incorrect wood case...the WC 22 is not the correct case, it will fit, but the correct case I believe is the WC 122...two side panels, and the top panel ...the top panel is flush with the edge of the faceplate...not the "wrap-around" old style case.

gattigail how much do you think these are worth?
@j.stribling25656 жыл бұрын
The new look is fine... why does everything have to stay exactly the same? If you wanted to color match vintage bulbs and intensity, you certainly could, but is it really worth it?
@gattigail6 жыл бұрын
It looks cool with LEDs. Different perhaps. For me, I prefer the original look as much as possible. It kinda reminds me of that original era in my life when those stereos were so cool and everybody in high school was into it.
@j.stribling25656 жыл бұрын
gattigail Yeah, I’m kind of a purist too. People are so critical these days. Sure, it looks different than original, but sometimes that can be cool too. Just ask any hot rod enthusiast.
