I've owned a 2285B since 78. The particle board cabinet fell apart decades ago. The Marantz runs like new. Only replaced the bulbs. I love that at 8 ohms it is 85 at 4 its 100 or so. Marantz was the greatest of all. Wish I was smart enough to have bought a 2500. I still can't remember what I did with my 2215 when I got the 85. The 15 is now a star in a Geico commercial! The yard sale spot. No such thing as a bad Marantz from the 70s. Great video!!

I still have my 2285B. I bought it in 1978 also while on Okinawa along with a cassette deck, turntable, ADC Sound Shaper II EQ, and Sony SS-850 IIs. The 2285B and the ADC SSII are still cooking but are now hooked up to a pair of Klipsch Horns.

My 2270 was handed down from my father who has passed so when someone says its not worth what they go for I have to respond you will have to pry out of cold dead hands. I just hope whoever ends up with it in future years will appreciate it as much I do. My tech friend who I have never met Sal restored both my 2270 and 2385.

The blue lights in the Marantz are the main feature that appeals to me. I wish I had one. I'm 77 and had friends back in the 70s who had Marantz stereo systems and I wanted one so bad; but I couldn't afford one.

I found a 2265B at goodwill a number of years ago. I paid 30 dollars for it. It worked perfect. I sold it for 300 on Ebay....still kicking myself!

If I may ask: What would you recommend for replacement caps for a 2235B? Also two other issues I'm having is a noisy volume pot that probably needs a full replace (as is I keep it fixed and use my streamer to control volume but that's not going to help with the Tuner or Phono). Lastly running an Ortofon Blue on an old Kenwood KD-550, the lack of a low-cut tends to have my woofers moving too much for critical listening levels. Is there a workaround to that or possibly a safe install? Thank you kindly!

@@wizardmix So I have a friend on ebay that sells the complete rebuild kit (which is what I use) and they are all Nichicon and WIMA plus, he gives step by steps instructions...You do have to know how to desolder, put in correctly (polarity for the electrolytics) and solder properly. The POT is one that goes out because think about it,,most used. When I work on these, I actually desolder them out, clean clean clean and lube ...Mostly they work ..if not they can be found on the BAY but about $90 bucks...they know they are getting rare to replace ...they fit about 5 or 6 models

I picked up a 2238 5 or 6 years ago for I think £220. It needs a clean and a new set of bulbs at the moment but it still sounds awesome. I just wish I had the spare cash for the wood surround which is missing.

With all due respect I think you overlooked something very important out of the 22 x x series I've dealt with marantz since 1973 a lot of the ones you mentioned are very nice how could you possibly leave out an overlook the 2285b I've owned a few but this 2285b blows out that 2270 hands down respectfully

My only issue with the Marantz designers and engineers is that they should have positioned all potentiometers with EASY access so that they could be deoxidized with D5 without having to take apart or move parts inside the receivers and amps. ALL pots need to be sprayed out every few years...some are impossible to reach without scary disassembly. I don't want to pay a tech to take apart my receiver to clean out pots....I guess they just didn't foresee the receivers and amps lasting as long as they did!

I sold Marantz, JVC, and Sony audio back in the mid 1970's, along with TEAC and JBL. My first home receiver was a Marantz 2245 receiver and it was killer. If Marantz had a downfall, it was too many receivers too close to each other. Heck from the bottom up, they made them in 5 watt/channel increments. How do you sell that? The prices between each level wasn't that much, they should have gone at 20 watt increments. At any rate, we couldn't keep them on the shelves, and the owner of the store cherry picked the models to give good coverage, and mixed in the quad channel receivers with the stereo models. Marantz had a few nice speaker models, too. I still have my Imperial 7's, but the woofers need new foam and the grills disintegrated 25 years ago. I stretched acoustic fabric across the grill frames and they looked and sounded just as good. Our biggest speaker seller was the L100 and 4311 JBL's, they would rock with anything from 15 to 150 watts/channel and weren't so big you couldn't find a place to put them. I loved that job, especially when somebody would come in and pretty much say "fix me up and don't worry about the cost".

I was just looking at Craigslist, and low and behold, a model 19 was listed 20 hours ago. So I contacted the seller, and he immediately texted me. I told him I could be there by 4pm. So a 45 minute drive, and it was mine! The unit belonged to his father, who bought it new! The unit is very clean, the fins are perfect.

I found a 2270 at the thrift store for $12 with the wood cabinet 😉 Took it to a shop to have it inspected and cleaned . Payed $75 and it was cleared with a good bill of health . Hooked up to my Altec Valencia’s 🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊

I think you're spot on about the iconic design of the 2270 (or really any of the 22-- series. When you think of a classic 70's Marantz, that's the image that immediately comes to mind. It's iconic in the same way as a '57 Chevy, a Fender Stratocaster, or Chuck Taylor All-Stars, and that's why there is the Marantz Tax.

I purchased a new 2270 and optional walnut case when I was stationed in Germany in 1973. I bought it at the Frankfurt Audio Club. I also bought Pioneer 777 speakers, along with a Philips Turntable. I had them shipped home unopened as part of the purchase deal. The Marantz unfortunately did not work out of the box. I took it in to an authorized repair shop and discovered that I had purchased the 220v 50cycle version. He rewired the power supply and everything was fine for years. One night I pushed it too hard and blew a circuit fuse internally. I had it repaired by another authorized dealer. The original one had retired. I got it home and it immediately blew the fuse again. The repairman was stumped. He didn't realize it was a European model and replaced the fuse with the American model. We got it straight and it went on to serve me many years. It met it's end with one lightning strike. R.I.P 2270 I do miss you!

I enjoyed watching your video. I purchased my 2270 new back in the middle 70"s when I was in college. The 2270 was an upgrade from my Superscope which had 20 watts per channel. The 2270 sat idle for almost 20 years as I just didn't want to part with it. Early on in the pandemic I had it refurbished and I'm glad I did. After it was refurbished I purchased a pair of Wharfdale Linton's speakers and it sounds great. I'm so glad I never got rid of it and now enjoy it daily.

I love my fully restored 2230 with wood case. I think the cap coupled design sounds better than the 2245 and 2270.

It is as this Marantz engineer said, the low power receivers sometimes sound better. The reason could be that the high power output transistors of the 70's where not as sophisticated as today, and more of a challenge back then compared to the lower powered ones.

I love the 2230 too. In terms of sound, it's one of the best Marantz ever made. It's not as powerful as the 2270, but do you really need that power? But do you really?

I’ve been listening to a Marantz 2325 with Klipsch K-Horns, Klipsch Belles on B . Together they offer a very dynamic sound , live club levels at a little past quarter volume. Old still puts goose bumps on my arms. At my age this is my system for life.

I had a Marantz I think 4340 receiver the 4 channel or SQ, I never got the module that plugged in the bottom of the receiver so I used it only in 2 channel wired to JBL L100's, no one had a better sounding receiver plus the JBL's were perfect for RUSH Fly By Night album, 1976 Kadena Air Force base Okinawa Japan, everything I bought there was half the price compared to State side. The exchange rate was 300 Yen to the dollar

I bought mine recently ,and paid top dollar for it too. It shipped from MI to Texas without a single scratch. I was so proud. Shortly after I decided to send the new (well…new to me) 2270 off to south Texas for a recapping job, new lights and vellum repair. After a month (and another grand) I received my recapped, re-lit 2270 (in that majestic original blue color). After reconnecting the Marantz with its old buddies, I turned it on to jam some vinyl and noticed that the repair shop somehow managed to put a scratch on the inside of the am/fm tuner scale plate (the black area on the am/fm dial). I’m glad I did the repair and I do look forward to jamming this thing for years to come, but it’s going to suck looking at that scratch every damn time my eyes are drawn to it. Meh! 😒

In 2010 a buddy sold me his 1978 original purchase Marantz 2252B for $30 as it had issues and he needed the bread. I got it fixed for $90 so total cost was $120. Only used it a few months but liked my Hitachi SR-804 better. He frequently mentioned his regret for selling his receiver. I gave it back to him in 2020 and ate the $120 loss. So I owned that Marantz for ten years. No good deed goes unpunished.

I'm lucky to have been given a 2235B from a family member who bought it new in the 70s. I have that thing powering some fairly serious high end speakers that I also found for WAY under what the modern equivalent would be worth, I've future proofed it with a decent streamer and when people listen to my setup, it changes their relationship to music. I watch it happen over and over, it never gets old. I thought for sure that Marantz would have to be upgraded or replaced but the damned thing truly sounds fantastic and of course it looks the business.

I bought a 2235B and find it is lacking in low end, depth, and the tuner is garbage. I was so excited (It has a black face, I purchased for $800) It's beautiful. Do you recommend any good restoration places. Surely this receiver is capable of producing better sound that this!

I restored my 2325 last year, thinking of selling it when the Ebay prices hit $2000. But it came out so beautiful and sounded so good that I couldn't part with it. It makes me smile every day that I see it and hear it. It really puts out 150W of clean power per channel. "Marantz Watts" as they say!

@@mertonchun9775 Marantz always hedged a bit and made more power than their spec. Also, the mains voltage has gone up a bit since the 70's in many places (110~115V went up to 120V in the US for example), so that helps increase power a bit.

Original owner of the 2015. Low watts? Yup! 15 CLASS A watts per channel. Keep your high power Class B or less. And a super phono stage for MM cartridges. (Shure V15 Type III) Infinity RSb 3ways sound amazing. Unfortunately, the tuner has weakened seriously. Time for a recap. Not sure what else makes the FM tuner lose sensitivity! I will be cremated with mine. LOL Cheers!

Have a 2325, and two 2270's. I don't care what they say; watts were measured differently back then. Any bench service and measurement measure about 10-15 watts stronger than originally spec'd. Unique compared to today's new stereo equipment, for they surely will not last a dozen years and appreciate,

Got my 2245 a few years back for $100. Met the guy at a condo and the radio didn’t work. Low balled him from his 500 asking price, took it home and the radio worked fine. Thank god there wasn’t reception at the condo. Paid more for the damn wood case later, but absolutely love it.

In my home office I have a European black faced 2226 receiver which I have attached an Allen Heath mixer and a pair of Technics 1210s that feeds Klipsch horn speakers. The tonal warmth of the Marantz balances out the brighter Klipsch and sounds great to my ears. Not the most powerful receiver but with sensitive speakers plenty power for a small room. Love your KZbin channel, keep up the good work.

Back in early 1972, I bought, on sale, a Marantz 2015 for $179.00. I paired it with a set of non name brand bookshelf speakers, 6x9 woofers with tweeters, and a pair of $50.00 Koss headphones. This was my first "real" stereo system. I was in love with this receiver, OMG. Way, way better than my previous very cheap dept. store bargains. The most impressive 15 watts in the world. Damn man, those truly were the days.

I was fortunate enough to recently pickup the European black face 2270 from a gentleman in my little town. He was extremely fair in the pricing. He was recently diagnosed with cancer and was selling all of his audio equipment. His daughter had know idea what any of it was. So I ended up buying his entire collection of audio gear for a fair price. Included are the Marantz 2216, 2010, 2015 along with Dynaco, Pioneer, Sony and Sansui. You always hear about stories like these but to ever come across one, once in a lifetime. He took really good care everything and have receipts for everything done to each piece. Yeah Marantz pricing today is off the charts. I have one Marantz in the collection. A 2265 which I bought locally many years ago for around $265. Pretty near MINT condition too. A gourgeous unit. Had already had its lights replaced, contacts cleaned and was spotless. I still have it in my office and it hasn't missed a beat in ten years. Running a pair of KLH 17s and hooked to a Techincs TT and a Panasonic DVD/CD player. Not the classic 2270 but, close enough, lol!

I had a 2230 when I was incollege and lost it in my divorce. She sold it. I just bought a 2270 and paired with AR3's in walnut case. Still in repair shop as the ebay seller was a hack repair guy and messed up the LEDs and hot wired the on off switch instead of replacing it along with a few other deatils but it is just about fully restored now. New faceplate is on the way. Can't wait to fire it up. I have my CD bank as an input and also iFi Zen blue blue tooth streaming DAC. I hope to light up my neighborhood pretty soon like the old days, REO, ACDC and a rest of the repotoire.

My sister gave me her 2216b when I was in high school. Her roommate had a monster Phase Linear system so she didn't need it. I loved that thing but sold it for $20 in the early 90s as home theater meant the vintage market was non-existent. Kicking myself on that one. I bought another Marantz in 97 but the newer ones didn't have the style and build of the originals. It sounded better than the competition but $400 receivers in 97 weren't great as a whole anyway. I ditched it after the third failure.

I just made a decision to buy the Marantz 4300 quad from a local pawn shop and I Paid under $1000 dollar's I'm going to get it serviced and the Wood cabinet restored but this thing plays great all the buttons and switches are great no static I looked on the inside and all the transistors capacitors etc look fine but I will have it put on the bench for testing in case of any drifts so all in all I think I got very lucky and I will have all the bubs change to LEDs but they all work the FM tuning actually has no drift I was surprised so whoever had this took very good care of it WOW 👀 I'm shocked.

Hi Rick, I have one, too. I think Kevin just had so many great Marantz models to pick from, and you just can't include them all in a Top 10 List: he certainly covered each era, and explains the reasons really well. 2275 owners can take consolation in the fact that our model came out with the 2250B and 2325, two other greats, and the 2325 is a pick here. One really cool thing about the 2275 is the heatsink/output modules can be removed simply by unplugging them, making for a seiously easier recap. There might be other Marantz models that share that design feature, but I haven't seen them. (love to hear if anyone knows of another?) A recapped 2275 is a mighty beast!

Nice video, thank you, really enjoy it. What do you think about 2275, is it pretty much same as 2270? And yes turntables will be great specially if you compare the titans-Garrard 301-401, Thorens 124 and Lenco L-70. Great job 👍

I think you did a great job on those picks. I'd like to spend some time listening to the Nineteen but probably won't happen they are hard to find. I totally agree with you on those 2015/2010s. I have a 2015 that I used to listen to daily in my office but it sits on the shelf now waiting for it's next owner. I also have a 2275 but my daily in my Living is a 2250B that I think sounds a bit better than my 2275, Hmmm don't know why. Maybe one day I can get my hands on a 2270. Thanks for the list Kevin !! My 2270 was stolen in 1977. I have a modern 7.2 it fine but I wish I still have the ,Marantz. I meet Saul in 1977. Very nice guy.

I got the 2235B in 1978. Still have it. At one point it was called upon to drive a pair of enormous Klipsch speakers (appx 30x30x48"h with high range horns on the top) that would not fit into a new apartment, so I fostered them for a couple of years. No issue for the 2235B Great sound. Clean, well defined, crisp highs and awesome lows.

Sounds like a pair of Klipsch Horns or La Scalas -- both worth some $$$ in and of themselves. I have an original, unrestored 2235B. My wife's uncle gave it to me and he bought it new. He came over for thanksgiving, heard it and said it never sounded that good when he had it. Driving a relatively unknown loudspeakers: Bob Gross Speaker Art Clef LS. They may be unknown but they are full range. They'll go right down to 23HZ.

In the mid1970’s, in S. Calif., Pacific Stereo, & Cal Stereo used to throw $199.95 “specials” into the market. The 2210 & 15’s would be Aired with a cheap Garrard turntable, and crap fiberboard Panasonic speakers. I refurbed a Goodwill Marantz direct drive turntable, and had made my speaker cabinets in wood shop, then cannibalizing an old Magnavox tv/Stereo/turntable console. Those used Altec-Lansing 15”, and I went to the local electronics house, Kiesub, and bought 3” 20 watt tweeters and Stereo crossovers, and though very heavy, they worked in every home, including now, But I never put it past 2 now (Fine apartment living)...😆😆😁

Marantz receivers will always be hands down my preferred equipment of the 70's. Of course the iconic blue lights and styling, but the sound was/ is amazing. The warmness, the timbre, that marantz tone...no one else had it in my opinion. Hey, I was just a snot - nosed kid back in the 70's, but I knew what I liked! Back then there were at least as many hi fi mags as there were fashion magazines and the coolest ads were of the marantz receiver in the house fire. The guy puts in a new cord, plugs it in and the thing comes back to life though a tad singed. I love 'em. And that tone! (Insert sigh)... Don't get me wrong, Sansui and Pioneer among a couple of others were cool too. But MARANTZ..... OOOOOOOO.....

I have a minty 2270 and very nice Pioneer SX737. Surely both can use a Skylabs restoration, but I'll be danged if I can decide which one should get priority. Doing the 2270 first seems like the sensible investment, but the 737 is synergistic with its partnering speakers and gets the most use. Paralysis by analysis!

In 1977 I bought the 2500 model, I loved it so much I purchased the 2nd 2500 a week after. I am retired now and recently sold both of them, one sold to buyer from Chile and the other one sold to buyer from France. Think about with the weight of these receivers and the cost of shipping to these countries. By the way the units were like showroom condition.

I really like old Marantz stuff. I have a PM-250 amp, ST-400 tuner and SD-3000 deck, all housed in a Marantz branded metal rack. I think I paid something like 80 euros for the lot ~15 years ago. They still work fine, despite being slightly too new (from 1980) to be from the golden days.

MARANTZ-WAS- a great line in the mid 1960s I still own my 10B Tuner bought most of excess stock parts in 1970s in Ontario-These older Vintage products were made with Quality-Unfortunately there day has come & gone -Cost of trying to repair one can empty bank quickly-If you still have one keep it as Ornament Take care of Looks

Proud owner of fully restored 2325, 2215 and a couple of 2245's, one with the champagne face. When I was a teenager in the mid 1970's, I fell in love with the sound of Marantz receivers that my friend's well-heeled father's had in their homes. I wanted one in the worst way - couldn't even dream of being able to afford one. Flash forward to the early 2000's, for whatever reason, I started thinking about them again. Bought a 2325 in need of some cosmetic cleaning and restoration and partnered with a guy who knew how to make these things sing again. I wound up buying, restoring and flipping several Marantz units, including a 2325, 2245 and 2252. I still hung onto the others that I opted not to sell for whatever reason, but sooner or later, they've gotta go. I will be hanging onto my 2325 for the rest of my days, though. I use it literally every day with a pair of JBL Century L100's that I found at an estate sale in the early '90's for twenty bucks. That's right. $20 - for the pair. I am in sonic heaven 7 days a week. Cheers.

I'm more of a Pioneer guy but a curb-find 2238B is what launched me into a vintage obsession. Although many would consider it low power, I've never had to turn it up past 6 and the sound holds pretty well when pushed. Great video once again!

I have a 2238b and it isn't powerful enough to make by 150w B&Os sing... but coupled with a marantz power amplifier - it is an excellent preamp - stunning

Minimalism. Lower power / simple circuit topology receivers and integrated amplifiers most often sound better than the more complex and high horsepower units.

Yes when you think about it ,the prices of these Marantz amps are getting to expensive that in my opinion is way to much ! For a 2270 it would be worth max 500 /550 , guys take your time to find one for a good price even if it takes a couple of years , this go’s for every Marantz from the golden time don’t be fooled by the prices Thanks D

Vintage Marantz were built well. However vintage Sansui G-Recievers looked & sound better. Better bass, dynamics & clarity. I've heard & owned most. The Sansui was the only revisit for me.

I had both a 2270 and a 2275, I ended up selling the 2270 because I couldn't really hear any difference between them, and the 2270 fetched a lot more money. My daily user is a 2330, which is gorgeous, the last one with the black windows, which I love. It seems to be rarer than the silvery 2330B, because I never see one for sale. 2015 was my first stereo. My dad was pissed off I bought it . . . not sure why. I worked, made my own money. Took it to college and the perfect size for a dorm room . . . but, my friends Dynaco tube amp kicked ass when it came to sound. In comparison, the Marantz was anemic.
