It was a wise decision to diversify. With changing times one has to look for more lucrative markets. His sons are running the cement business well. Who's to say if that's making more or less than the detergent business? Kasanbhai was a clever and smart businessman and took calculated risks and succeeded in his endeavours. That's most important. It's not important that the detergent business only should do well. His sons can also further diversify and who knows they can be the next Ambani/Adani in the coming decades!

Nirma went down coz it was a horrid detergent on the hands. Many of us suffered from rashes and posarisis on the hands using it. I'm glad it was discontinued. Surf and Ariel and tide are much better.

According to me their is no problem in diversification but i must say before proceeding to it you must achieve mastery at any one of the field you are good at so that everytime their is a problem related to that field you will definitely get a preference. And I think the mistake the CEO of nirma made that he diversified his business as he was facing major loss in his business Well in that case you must overcome loss by upgrading not by diversification.

i guess diversification of business is even profitable if diversified smartly. the biggest example of it is Mukesh Ambani the 2nd richest indian, asian and the 8th richest person in the world. Ril is even a diversified company but, still is the most profitable indian company and has the third largest market cap among indian companies after Tata Group & Adani Group. It also gives high returns to it's investors, too. It's growing at a significant pace, too. So diversification of business can be profitable if diversified properly and smartly.
