Greatest female singing voice I've ever heard. She recorded this track in the studio as a demo, singing the lyrics written on a napkin, just to see if her version of the song would "fit" what she was after. Her first rough take was so perfect, it was the only take she did, and it was used on the final recording.

The ULTIMATE vocalist (not just a singer) who sang to us, the listener, NOT AT US... Purest, richest, warmest, most beautiful female voice of love and romance songs ever... As the saying goes, it felt like she was singing to you and only you...

I've heard this before, and it's an excellent point. I tire of hearing competition-show singers trying to stun us with how loud or high they can go. Karen, as you said, sang TO us. Some reactors have made the remark, "It's like she'd TALKING to us."
@tomschmitz-dj1fg
@tomschmitz-dj1fg Жыл бұрын
@@christopheryochum3602 exactly! How many times have you watched American Idol and similar singing talent shows and the judges go over the top ridiculously so praising some singer, where I know myself I think "what the heck, all they do is scream, and scream louder, use comical "runs" and so on and so on!" and Yet they are praised and rewarded?! Shame on these shows and shame on these hosts for validating them and trying to mold public sentiment as to what is "talent"..
@christopheryochum3602
@christopheryochum3602 Жыл бұрын
@@tomschmitz-dj1fg Gee whiz...you're a man after my own heart. :) There is one exception to the singers who do exactly what you describe. "Comical runs" is one of my pet peeves. I think you're referring to overembellisment of the actual melody, sometimes to the point you don't recognize the song as it was written. The thing about Karen Carpenter is that she didn't HAVE to do that because the quality of her singing was so good that it was so alluring to hear her just sing the song. The exception I mentioned is a singer I first saw on America's Got Talent. She had to leave a music program in college when she lost her hearing. She was in a dark place for a while until her father challenged her to work on a song and sing it to him when he got back from work. So she used a tuner app on her phone and spent all day singing into the phone to make sure she was on-pitch (something I LOVE about Karen, even LIVE). She did it and figured he'd get off her back when he heard how bad it would be. Well, when he got back, she sang the song to him, not actually hearing what she was singing. When she finished, she looked at him and he was crying it was so beautiful. She took the recording of this to her vocal coach and played it for her. The coach said that recording would be a good goal for them to work on, thinking the recording was done before she lost her hearing and not knowing the singer had only a few days before sang that. When she was later asked to sing the National Anthem at an NFL game, she sang it with no embellishment because she said she respected the song as it was written. She actually writes her own music and came out with two albums of original songs (which I bought) and was asked back to perform a few months ago on AGT: All-Stars 2023. Her name is Mandy Harvey. Cheers !

There will never be another Karen Carpenter. She had so many great hits with here brother Richard who plays the piano. We've Only Just Begun, Close To You, Rainy Days and Mondays are only a few hits by this duo. Karen also started out playing the drums. Her voice was to good to be in the background on the drums. 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵

Karen Carpenter, no one has ever topped her voice. Love The Carpenters! Had all of their singles between 1971 or 72 through highschool until 75 or 76. Looking back now it's funny because during those highschool it was all about The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and so on. When I had friends over I would have to stash my Carpenters singles because I would have gotten crushed by my friends. Definitely peer pressure back then. This was soft pop and not cool but I loved them and sure a few of my buddies secretly liked some of their songs too. Peace ❤

The Carpenters and Luther Vandross are the most well known versions. It has been covered by numerous artists, and of course, the "styles" of them vary, so you can get one you'll like. The original was by Delany and Bonnie and Friends, written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. The idea for the song was from Rita Coolidge (she was a backup singer for D&B and Friends at that time) who when watching groupies of famous performers thought there was subject matter in the interactions she had seen that would work for a song.

Written by ”The Master of Time and Space”, Leon Russell (and Bonnie Bramlett). Leon was a member of the Wrecking Crew and is a greatly overlooked musician today, don’t miss the chance to dive down this mans rabbit hole. A few suggestions to start off the journey would be “Stranger In A Strange Land” and from the Concert for Bangla Desh, "Jumpin' Jack Flash -Young Blood”. Also a must see is this TV special featuring Leon along with another Wrecking Crew great, Glen Campbell, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH_XqZ-BorOIfM0

Karen and Richard started out at Long Beach State as two of a jazz trio. One of my favourite songs in their catalogue taps into their jazz routes. It’s a song composed by the genius Leon Russell entitled “This Masquerade.” Of course there are many more popular songs by the Carpenters. But I love this jazzy tune.

As good as this is, you must also hear the famous cover of this by Luther Vandross as well as Usher's cover of Luther's version. You will not be disappointed! Karen Carpenter, by the way, was in a class by herself so I am not mad at you for playing this or their other classics like "We've Only Just Begin" or "(They Long To Be) Close to You."

They had soul! You don`t hear that any more. Karen was a natural singer with no vocal training. Once the record company decided that she should stop playing the drums (which she loved so much) and put her out front, she got very depressed and that led to her death. Fucking record company killed Karen Carpenter. A voice and a drum talent that is sorely missed! They should have fought harder but in those days there wasn`t too many options to choose from. There was like three record companies. Most were just like what they had.
