This is one of the songs where Jon Bonham (the drummer) plays in a different time signature than the rest of the band is playing. It's difficult to do, not just for the drummer but the rest of the band as well. As a listener, it makes it hard to find the groove on your first time through the song. But after a few times through it, you feel the groove a lot more and you think, "how did they come up with that?".

Led Zeppelin was/is an influence on everyone. This was one of the 1st albums I bought that wasn't The Beatles specifically because of this song. The technique is call & response. It was unusual because the call was vocal and the response was instrumental. There are 3 sections (instrumentally) which are fairly simple when you look at the tabs. The timing and cadence make it quite a bit more complex, but still not too hard to play. Jay mentioned a few things that made Led Zeppelin a cut above almost everyone else. John Bonham's drumming is in a class by itself. Robert Plant's voice is what every rocker wishes he had. John Paul Jones could play just about anything and was/is a genius in terms of creating very complex time signatures and changes between them within the same piece. And then there's Jimmy Page. Besides being a guitarist extraordinaire, he was a masterful producer. One of the things he did on Black Dog and many others was double and triple tracking a line. That's why it sounds like there's more than one guitar even though he's the only one playing guitar. (David Gilmore of Pink Floyd is another master of this.) And he often plays more than one part. It's as captivating and electrifying now as it was all those years ago. Never gets old.

Zeppelin, Joplin and Floyd were the three prongs of serious Rock in the day. Loved them all and enjoyed them to no end. Still sitting on the top of my music charts.

This was my High School Football Teams song before we walked out to play every home game.....We would crank this so loud so the visitors could hear it in their locker room too. 1977-81

One of my favorite rock vocalists ever, and you have notice how he almost uses his voice as another instrument in the band.

Seven Zep songs in, and you've barely scratched the surface. Hope you'll do "Ramble On" or "The Ocean" next. :)

They couldn't come up with a title for this song, but there was a black labrador retriever hanging out in the recording studio when they were recording it, so they called it Black Dog. That's the kind of thing that happens when you try to come up with a song title while you're stoned.

Probably not true. It's about a prostitute.

@@damnyancey nope. The song title definitely refers to a neighbors dog who used to pay visits to Headley Grange while the band was recording the album. That's a pretty well documented story.

@@damnyancey No it isn’t. Where on earth did you hear that?!

Congratulations for being able to react to a Led Zeppelin tune without being blocked! Both "Black Dog" and "Rock and Roll" are very good quick hit radio friendly pop songs. However if you dig much deeper, its well worth the trip. "Custard Pie" Gallows Pole", "The Wanton Song" "Ten Years Gone" and the list goes on. What I can say is that being around since this album came out, is that I won't lose sleep if I never hear "Stairway To Heaven" again..........

It's so great to watch these vids. I've blasted Led Zep in my car and my headphones for 30 years now. I discovered them 10 years after they broke up. It's amazing how fucking good life is in those moments you are blasting Led Zep. What a gift. I'm glad these guys get it.

The most essential song would be Whole Lotta Love. Also Stairway to Heaven.
