This is one of the songs where Jon Bonham (the drummer) plays in a different time signature than the rest of the band is playing. It's difficult to do, not just for the drummer but the rest of the band as well. As a listener, it makes it hard to find the groove on your first time through the song. But after a few times through it, you feel the groove a lot more and you think, "how did they come up with that?".

Definitely listen to “When the Levee Breaks”. It’s an old blues standard, but Zep made it their own. And you will probably recognize the drum beat in the opening bars - it’s one of the most sampled grooves in modern music.

Led Zeppelin was/is an influence on everyone. This was one of the 1st albums I bought that wasn't The Beatles specifically because of this song. The technique is call & response. It was unusual because the call was vocal and the response was instrumental. There are 3 sections (instrumentally) which are fairly simple when you look at the tabs. The timing and cadence make it quite a bit more complex, but still not too hard to play. Jay mentioned a few things that made Led Zeppelin a cut above almost everyone else. John Bonham's drumming is in a class by itself. Robert Plant's voice is what every rocker wishes he had. John Paul Jones could play just about anything and was/is a genius in terms of creating very complex time signatures and changes between them within the same piece. And then there's Jimmy Page. Besides being a guitarist extraordinaire, he was a masterful producer. One of the things he did on Black Dog and many others was double and triple tracking a line. That's why it sounds like there's more than one guitar even though he's the only one playing guitar. (David Gilmore of Pink Floyd is another master of this.) And he often plays more than one part. It's as captivating and electrifying now as it was all those years ago. Never gets old.

Led Zeppelin Going to California is one of their best songs . You want acoustic guitar and a mandolin , its mellow song. People only think of Zeppelin as hard rock. I suggest you watch a live version. Alot of the song is a reference to Joni Mitchell. Robert Plant ( lead singer) thought she was special , which she was. Great reaction. Led Zeppelin set the bar for what a rock band could be in the 70's, and after that, most bands didn't even try since Zeppelin was so amazing. All four members were exceptional, and together they were unstoppable. Interesting about them is that their guitar play (Jimmy Page) was also their producer. So what you hear is unique, and exactly what he wanted the band to sound like.

Led Zeppelin is widely considered the greatest Rock band in history for a reason. Well, reasons. Everyone is one of the greatest ever in their instrument and Robert Plant is always on best singer list. I really think the deeper cuts you will even enjoy. 10 years gone, when the levee breaks, four sticks is interesting because the drummer uses to six in each hand.

In 2005, a British radio station did a poll to create the ultimate rock group. Listeners voted on their favorite singer, guitarist, bassist, and drummer. The four members of Led Zeppelin won 🤷🏼‍♂️

Led Zeppelin albums are meant to play back to back. Their hits are endless. They were always evolving. I was going to see them in concert with my uncle who saw them multiple times. He was going to splurge and get us front and center... Bonham died! I was devastated! 😓😫

Watching you guys react to songs reminds me of how we used to really listen to songs when I was growing up, you would put a record on and sit down and listen, maybe check out the art work in the album and read the liner notes, but as a teenager I used to really listen, nowadays you have music on while cleaning, studying, working etc but the closest is driving around in your car and just listening.it doesn’t seem like people listen to music that way anymore, enjoy watching you do that .

Agreed.. go buy the album and I was good for 6 hours, holed up in my room, listening over and over. Check out the art work, sometimes they had pics, posters or lyrics.. ahh, those were the days! I know every lyric to lots of them..

Best voice ever! That's what's up with the Led, best singer, best guitarist, best drummer, etc. If not the best, it could be argued or no one's better. Glad you're noticing the drummer. If you pay attention to the drummer you'll catch how much he is actually weaving a ton of style into the rythm while making it sound so simple and you'll catch all the other pieces of the band. "Since I've Been Lovin You" is the most Led Zeppelin song there is. It's what they're all about!

One of my fav LZ songs along with Over The Hills and Far Away, Ramble On, Hey Hey What Can I Do and Rain Song. Black Dog always makes me laugh as it it not about a dog, yet is named after one. However, they do have an actual song about a dog called Bron-Y-Aur Stomp. Lovely song especially if you are a dog lover.

They couldn't come up with a title for this song, but there was a black labrador retriever hanging out in the recording studio when they were recording it, so they called it Black Dog. That's the kind of thing that happens when you try to come up with a song title while you're stoned.

@@damnyancey nope. The song title definitely refers to a neighbors dog who used to pay visits to Headley Grange while the band was recording the album. That's a pretty well documented story.

Congratulations for being able to react to a Led Zeppelin tune without being blocked! Both "Black Dog" and "Rock and Roll" are very good quick hit radio friendly pop songs. However if you dig much deeper, its well worth the trip. "Custard Pie" Gallows Pole", "The Wanton Song" "Ten Years Gone" and the list goes on. What I can say is that being around since this album came out, is that I won't lose sleep if I never hear "Stairway To Heaven" again..........
