I thought of this watching you play the Afro/Cuban beat demonstrating the Herta. I learned this 50 yrs. ago from Allan Dawson. Its just a double paradiddle starting with right hand. The right stays on the bell of the cymbal and left goes back and forth between the rim of the snare and the small tom. Its a nein ego beat [ sp. ] and I usually play left foot clave with it. 21 st. Centuary Schitzoid Man, has got to be close to 50 yrs, old. Gavin, your one of the nice guys in this buisness, so I hope you don't mind me sharing a lick. For those not quite understanding what GH was playing with his feet.... Think of it this way. First learn to play triplets on your double pedals, being: LRR... then once this is mastered put a left foot between the RR part of the LRR pattern. Maybe you could think of it like this: L R and R , L R and R, etc.... (the and being the extra left foot) . The so called "Afro-Cuban" pattern being played between the ride cymbal and the snare drum is very similar to a Double Paradiddle, but instead of being RLRLRR-LRLRLL the sticking is: RLRLRR-LRLRLR.. Happy Drumming.... Chris Brien..
@chrisbrien6 жыл бұрын
Jezen Thomas thank you for your reply... I do understand the difference between Semi-Demi Quavers (1/32 notes) and Semi-Demi Quaver Triplets (1/16th Note Triplets). Whether they be in groups of 3, 5, 7 etc... If you read what I wrote and understand what an "African Six" pattern is you would have immediately understood that Gavin is playing a classic Afro-Cuban rhythm which can be interpreted as 4/4', 3/4, 6/8 & 12/8.. Gavin mentions that this pattern is his cue for exiting his solo of which he hasn't mentioned that it is an "African Six" pattern but maybe he did in another part of the interview. Nice to discuss drumming concepts with you.... All the best, Chris Brien.

Once the Duallist D4 pedal becomes more prevalent, we'll look at these grooves as oldies but goodies. I currently use 2, D4 Kick Pedals. One for each bass drum. Don't judge me till you've tried it.
@helenpowell79086 жыл бұрын
YouAllJackasses - you are part of the same narrow minded fools that gear any progress or technology. Next you'll be saying it was invented by the devil. Don't be afraid of new technology, embraces it and learn from, then move to a higher place. My uncle was the great Cozy Powell that was the first to use the Ludwig Speed King Pedal design, it was much quicker and much more powerful due to the gear ratios. Was that cheating too. Where do you draw your line. If I have a shitty, no frills pedal can I play as good as someone with a $500 pedal? This design will soon be the only pedal being sold and the possibilities will bring drumming to a new level. I've been playing for 30 years and inspiration to create new grooves gets old. These pedals opened an entire new dimension in the "art of drumming". There are no boundaries when it comes to creation.
@helenpowell79086 жыл бұрын
YouAllJackasses YES. DUMBASS. If I could learn to play with four sticks I would. Isn't that what art is. Learning to use innovation, to invent new paths to push us forward and further. That is called technique through technology. Do new drum sticks made of graphite scare you too. Do V- DRUMS make you run and hide behind mommy's skirt? Embrace technology and innovative thinking, that's why you have a iPhone and are able to chat with me on YOU TUBE. Is learning from the Internet cheating? You are a fool. Nothing more and probably spinning your wheels, going nowhere fast. DA
@helenpowell79086 жыл бұрын
YouAllJackasses Try the Duallist D4 pedal with open and closed hi hats combinations. The possibilities with compound beats from the bass drum with open and closed hi hats, is insane. The grooves created are no match to any other I've ever heard except from a drum computerized tracks. Again, new and improved grooves. Try it, you"ll like it. And if you do as I did, you can still use tradition double bass and quadruple double bass, or just one double bass with one foot with the hi hat.
@vintagemxer91656 жыл бұрын
I would bet most of us can do this with time. The hands part is no problem - just a matter of doing it so much to be muscle memory. Then the feet. Again, not a problem but it must become a natural pattern. Then slowly putting it together. Maybe the first 2 beats - the double paradiddle leading into the snare back beat. I think it's worth getting down because it's wicked!

I've just had a great laugh, I slowed it down to 0.5 and it sounded like a pair of drunks trying to teach a drum pattern. Slowing it down does make it easier, but also hilarious. try it .

I’d never even heard of Gavin Harrison much less Porcupine Tree. He’s awesome and so was PT! I wish these types of videos were around when I was a kid and just started playing drums. I would’ve kicked ass! Back in the day you either had to have an excellent teacher, which was hard to find, or spend thousands of dollars on instructional videos. Most of those kinda videos sucked because the drummers very rarely broke thing down and if it wasn’t that great of a video (Bobby Rock) you were out $60-$80 per video cassette. Now there’s thousands of great instructional content online that there’s no reason for being a shitty drummer unless you flat out suck.
