Meh, I feel like Nolan ruined it by making it "non-linear" and for what end, exactly? He seems to be doing this shit for its own sake. The story of Dunkirk isn't a mystery; everyone knows how it ends, so it might as well have been told in a traditional form. That being said, I was surprised that I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from weeping when the civilian boats arrive at Dunkirk--THAT is Nolan at his finest! Also the sound of the divebombers was brilliantly done. Hans Zimmer has done it again. Other than that, there was nothing. I didn't give a shit about any of the characters, so any "suspenseful" scenes where so-and-so was at risk of dying produced no reaction in me. Still, it should be seen by all men. That is a film about what being a man USED to be like. Can we ever reclaim those days?

ingramation1 I thought Dunkirk was solid. I had an issue with the fact that none of the characters were fleshed out. It was just like you were following strangers you know nothing about the entire movie. I realize that was Nolan's intention, to create the atmosphere of being in the middle of a war, where people more often then not didn't have the time to communicate too much with one another, explaining their stories and what not, but I just felt like part of the experience was taken away due to none of the characters being developed. The sound design, practical effects and cinematography were amazing, though.

The debate here is simply the statement "slaves built the monument". They didn't. 85% of it was built after slavery was abolished. And if white men used slaves to build some of the first 15%, that still doesn't lead to the conclusion that slaves built the monument.

Eliza Hamilton helped raise funds for it, and she passed before the civil war. stone masonry was a highly skilled thing, so it wasn't likely done by slaves, but mining for it and hauling stones was likely done by slaves.

My biggest problem with the new characters in the spiderman movie was Flash Thompson. Pretty crazy. Used to love going to the movies growing up. Favorite thing to do with my parents and grandparents as a young man. In my 20s now. Haven't gone in years. This is part of the reason. The portrayal of all of these different types of people of different races etc. becomes nauseating when it comes off as "we need to teach these unaccepting people a lesson." Especially with race relations between the main character and a black woman being an important part of the story line. Also, the whole background story of the protagonist is partly based on the Artus legend (with his origin resembling a medieval EUROPEAN world) AND the main character was made to look pretty much like Clint Eastwood in the 60s by the author himself. There are probably tons of more reasons, why casting a black man for this role was bullshit ... but hey, the main female black character in this adaptation of book series can be be portrayed by a white woman, right? It is about Dunkirk - a part of WW2. Germans advanced into France trapping allies on the beaches of Dunkirk. Yada yada.. Some 300,000 French, British, Dutch, and Belgian people were safely evacuated. Point he's making is that in 1940: The US Military consisted of over 16 million soldiers and of that: 1 million were black. 300k Japanese. 20k Chinese. 23k Native. 65k Puerto Rican. Which leaves app. 13-14 MILLION whites. Blacks were roughly 10% of the entirety of the military and most were only joining to aim at earning equal rights back home. Their words mind you. So the fact there's crying over no diversity when the five participating countries (six if you include the antagonist Germany were all predominantly white. None more so then Germany obviously. It just makes absolutely no sense to cry over it. Zero.

They brought it back just to make the cast all women, but they also had to have their token. If you have ever played or heard of Dragon Age, almost every single NPC is bisexual or pansexual or anything in between. Historically accurate things are now being altered for the sake of inclusion. There was a uproar over Battlefield 1 because there were no female characters for obvious reasons.

Am Asian, used to be a proud movie junkie, I could name so many great movies and names of actors actresses and tell my friends how great the scripts and cinematography are. Then the social justice agendas started to creep on the coming movies, I stopped watching them. Bright side is that, since I am a 90s guy, I decide to track back and watch movies in the old time as in 50s or 60s 70sand I end up finding out more movies I like. One thing I love about American movies is the sense of humor, and sometimes this sense of humor may be built on racial and sexual stereotypes. I fear that social justice is ruining that sort of sense of humor for the coming generations.

Just coz some films have "SJWness", that should not stop you from enjoying films. There is a huge market of great films that are either non-political or at least subtle about them. Even in Hollywood. Hell, try watching foreign films. Heard Burning and Climax are really good.

A contemporary Spider-Man in New York with diverse characters was actually an example of it done well. For one they avoided the trope of the school arsehole being a white jock, nobody's sexuality came into it except where it was part of the plot and the characters had personalities not limited to simply being a certain race. There was nothing jarring in the portrayals that made you leave the moment and go "I see what you're doing here with your agenda", which I can definitely say happened when watching Rogue One and a New Hope.

For some reason the diversity in Spiderman just didn't bother me. No doubt marvel were taping into the SJW wave, but they managed to do it tastefully. I think the people at marvel are too smart to turn a multimillion $ film into a stupid SJW tirade. I didn't feel like there was an angry spiteful ignorant SJW behind in the background yelling the way I feel when I watch a lot of Hollywood crap like The Hunger Games or Game of Thrones. First of all they probably introduced a new character purely because MJ was already done so they wanted something fresh. Second of all slaves were most likely involved in the construction whether involved in the quarries or the actual site. If they had a large role in building, that is undocumented however. Third I do agree that the flash thompson casting was bad but to say the whole movie was a PC nightmare even though for the most part it is kind of accurate (New York is very diverse so the diversity isn't undeserved). And why would Toby Maguire make a difference. Edit: did not realise but the flash thompson character is not Indian whatsoever. He was born and raised in the US and his parents are from Guatemala.

Okay I've never played BF1 but a black French soldier isn't really historically inaccurate. European colonial powers did bring soldiers in from their colonies. There's nothing wrong when they add diversity where it's appropriate.

In conclusion, no point in wasting time and money in transferring manpower. The French awarded the 369th Infantry Regiment, Harlem Hell fighters, an American unit and they served some six months until the war is over.
