Dungeon Crawler Carl is a great example of why different book covers are so important! I've only ever seen a kind of '80's 'classic' scifi style cover for it, and that never really convinced me to see what the story's about. But what you described sounds exactly like something I would enjoy, and the cover you showed is much more appealing to me. So, on my TBR it goes 😁 I would thank you, but at this point I'll be 80 by the time I've finally finished my TBR, I really don't need more titles to add 😂

The audible cover he showed is the indie cover. It was recently picked up by a traditional publisher and changed the covers. I like the indie ones so much better.

I'm not a big fan of those covers, but that's why I said it's important to have *different* cover designs; people have different tastes, and what might pull one person in can be what puts someone else off. So I like this new (or I guess it's new, I hadn't seen it before at least) design better! Gives off that whimsical video game vibe Gavin describes, which I really didn't get from the indie cover I saw. (Edited to add: I hadn't seen the Audible cover when watching the video, but went back to look for it after reading your comment. So the cover I'm referring to in my original comment is the new one)

I love the "Limbo-ss" designation for the soft dnf. Because it is very real that you can read something that you're vibing with so much in the moment and then anything you try and read after that, even if it's great, doesn't feel great after such a high. I'm glad you're trusting your gut and keeping it even if you end up still not liking it later. To paraphrase Treebeard, "Don't be so hasty, little hobbit" 😂

the only book I'm really sad you unhauled is Bonesmith. Yes, it's YA, but it's actually REALLY good, and the sequel Ghostsmith really stuck the landing with both upping the stakes and providing great character growth and worldbuilding to the story.

We've got to find you that haunted lighthouse to stay at, Gav. I am *determined* to see this happen for you. And previously I recommended Widow's Point by Richard and Billy Chizmar as the perfect book for such a trip, but I have an update on that: It's still the perfect book, though the novella is out of print... but it's being expanded and rereleased in 2025! You should be able to soft dnf in this series without unhauling (because the toss is an unhaul or hard dnf), or simply pass if you don’t want to read that genre. I personally don’t mind if you mood read and chose to read down your audio instead

I'm in the process of revamping my own spreadsheet. And when I say revamping I mean moving them from numbers to sheets because numbers is so arcaic and sad. Theres no real way to automate like I want to on the program. I added my kindle books in this time around because they were fully neglected by me this year. So I think thats a great idea to add them!

I did try this but it also removed the numbers from the side, so it would go 1, 4, 5, 8, 11 etc. so if I did the random number generator, I would still need to click it a few times to get a usable number

If you want to get into danmei and liked Dungeon Crawler Carl you should check out The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish, kinda the same concept guy goes another world but this time its a novel he read and there is a game system leading him through getting him to complete challenges as a pet fish to a prince in china. Its 4 books, last one is coming out in march. One that is already complete is The Scum Villain’s Self Saving System -guy in game - not as fun but still good.

I liked godkiller more than you but I did have a good time with the first book as well and need to continue on to the sequel. Orbital sounds a bit meh to me so I am glad I decided to pass up on that one.
