The moral of the poem goes so much further than “lying is bad,” it reflects the immense impact of the chivalric code and the role the church played in forming the men of that time, it’s definitely worth a deeper analysis

It also is about the church taking over the pagan gods and nature. Remember that no matter the game, nature will win. So be brave while playing, we all end the same.

Everyone always gives a hard time to the church for the bad its done is the past ignoring all the good its done like stopping slavery, feeding the sick and poor, giving shelter to the needy, caring for orphans, and so much more, the church in the past was held to such a high regard that it was pretty much the government, and as with our present governments, there are those who climb the ranks with no intent to improve the country but instead to destroy and steal and conive but for some reason the church is blamed like they've only ever orchestrated the worst atrocities in history

@@ridgefrost The church is held to a high standard, unlike secular governments. So anything bad that the church did in the past will be brought up and scrutinized. And it's not like you can sweep the bad things the church did under the rug and say "oh look at the good", the church definitely needs to repent, and they're some sins the church hasn't repented yet. Such as the sexual abuse scandals that still persist to this very day, or the covering up of mass grave sites of indigenous people.

The point of the challenge is that you can't take the easy way out. Everyone is watching, so if you give him a tiny nick, you look like a coward in the eyes of everyone. It's a game of chicken where the objective is to give him the strongest blow you are willing to receive in turn. Gawain is reckless and thinks he can get out of it proving himself brave and strong without accepting the return blow.

I still remember writing a report on this story back in high school. We were allowed to take a creative writing approach to the intro paragraph, so I wrote a short story in the second person about a knight being mortaly wounded in a dual, but still being expected to fight on. My teacher went around the room as we were writing, to check in and give feedback. "We're one paragraph in and you've disembowled the reader" may be my favorite ever reaction to an academic paper.

I've seen a lot of people riled up by this casting Julia, but I think the truth is that Hollywood does not, or at least has not, throughout history, provided actors of color many roles to shine. @@grinninggoblin3698 The ending is one of VERY few subversions that actually works... SPOILERS. . . . . . . . . . . . I though the first ending we got was going to be it and I was disappointed that they went with a "what if" and had Gawain fail his quest and lie about it. It was a bit interesting with what happened after King Arthur died after making Gawain heir and see that in the end, he was always weighed down by the sash he had on. After taking it off and accepting his death, he woke up to being in the green chapel again and decided to take off the sash. This rebuilt his character from growing, flawed, but well intentioned knight, to someone worth of the title and story to tell. It is a perfect subversion because it then rebuilt him back and for the better. Hollywood fails at subversion because they don't bother rebuilding and thus the subversion becomes destruction.
@grinninggoblin3698
@grinninggoblin3698 3 жыл бұрын
@@crocidile90 that's an understandable way of looking at it. SPOILERS BELOW: . . . . . . . . . . . I saw Gawain not as a well intentioned knight trying to live up to the legends that are the other knights, but as a self-serving jerk. He is a dishonorable man, and a coward. In the ending he witnesses a vision of his life should he run away in which he spends the rest of his life as a miserable and dishonorable man. When he wakes in the chapel he choses to die. I saw this not as redemption, but as resignation. If he cannot live honorably then he should die honorably. That is the message I took from the film. In the written story I saw Gawain as a man trying his best, but with doubts that in the end the Green Knight corrects. In the film Gawain is a knave who gives up on life. In short, it isn't a hopeful redemption, but the final failure of a fool. It's the culmination of Gawain's actions in the film and vision that paint him so poorly. It doesn't help that we cut the scene after the Green Knight chops in which motivations are shared and explored.

There's a big chunk of this story that is very similar to one surrounding Cu Chulainn. In the story about Cu, there is a giant again who visits and challenges Cu to cut off his head, with the promise that Cu allow himself to have his head cut off by the giant later on. Cu seems to be angered by the challenge but ends up decapitating the giant with such force that its head bounces off the ceiling, the floor, and the ceiling again (if memory serves). The giant walks off with his head, stating that he'll return to see if Cu upholds his end of the bargain. Cu makes no attempt to flee, though he is very visibly irritable. When it comes to upholding the promise, Cu doesn't back out, and so the giant acknowledges Cu's courage and states to all that Cu Chulainn should receive the "Hero's Portion" of a meal. I wonder if perhaps that similarity between the two stories could have resulted in The Green Knight not being a popular story in the past. Or perhaps there's another reason I'm not aware of.

this story reminds me of a story of Cu Chulainn I read once. it has been a while so I'm a little rusty, but if memory serves, there was a disagreement about the bravery of the men of Ulster, so a magician who served the local lord hid himself as a large man with an axe, and issued a challenge, to receive a blow that would be repaid the next night. the first man did not believe he would survive and fled, and the next challenger fled, but Cu Chulainn redyed himself, only for the blow to fall harmlessly next to him, with the magician revealing himself and Cu Chulainn being recognized for his bravery.

Yes, indeed he could've meerely prodded him harmlessly and invited the green knight to the table for festivities, but that would've broken the character. It's good you ponder why he didn't slay the green knight, but I think you should look beyond the shallow canonical reasoning. What does Gerwian's actions mean? What is implied by the slaying of the green knight, and what would be if gerwain had not? These are the sort of questions i reccomend asking yourself if you want to enjoy analysing the text

@@re-crafted2993 Clearly, there is no story if Gawain isn’t prideful and cuts off the knight’s head, and his choice makes complete sense for such an immature character, but had he listened to the rules more carefully, he should have understood “hmm, maybe I shouldn’t kill this magical being who will do the same to me later…”
