You obviously never saw Polly Farmer play. He made his team-mates e.g. Billy Goggin into champions. He could handpass with accuracy further than some can kick. Kicking goals only is not the measure of a champion ruckman. I am a magpie supporter.

@@stevelozevski8151 Yes mate I am not far off 60 years old, Polly Farmer maybe the only one I never saw play but have seen plenty of footage of him. I used to watch the Interstate games so maybe saw Polly play for WA against Victoria but unsure as I was pretty young. I clearly temember the rest.

Lmao, How do you figure? You can argue that Gawn's elite fitness and ability to cover grass gives him the nod as arguably the greatest ever. The game has evolved to the point where you need extra strings to your bow to act as a point of difference, and while I agree that Gawn isn't as lethal in front of goal, his defensive and offensive thrusts that give Melbourne the added threats to contend is second to none. Gawn acts as essentially another midfielder for Melbourne. He not only covers ground in terms of midfielder numbers, but his aerial ability ON TOP of his ruck craft is one of the best the game has ever seen. Asides from Grundy over the last 10 years, there is no other ruck that plays anywhere close to what Gawn does on the weekly since 2016.

Madden and Gawn both freaks I would still give Madden the nod. Mind you Max's career not over just yet. Madden was also an amazing aerial exponent (could take a huge hanger,) ruck craft was regarded as 2nd to none in his era, big game player (won the 85 Norm Smith,) and was a very neat and accurate kick for goal. Madden durable as well 370 odd games but as I said they're both great it's always hard comparing eras.
