"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

The thing that's missed with ultra-right types is their happiness depends on "winners and losers". For marriage to be valid, there have to be people who can't get married, by allowing gay marriage they literally cannot enjoy themselves because it goes against their whole value structure. They can't believe in prosperity for all because they fundamentally believe prosperity and happiness for them depends on the lack of property and happiness for others.

Yes, and this is not *technically* inconsistent with that view. The state being involved in marital affairs today means ‘recognizing’ marriages for the sake of tax benefits and such. Nobody needs the state’s permission to live together, open a joint bank account, appoint a certain person as their proxy or authorize an insurance beneficiary. The worst material loss from the state not recognizing same-sex marriage is gays getting robbed by the IRS. Obviously that’s not the argument most people make in favor of same-sex marriage, but in terms of material conditions I believe it is the strongest. Now I have a feeling Ben still believes that deep down none of these tax benefits should apply to anyone because it incentivizes marriages that aren’t completely genuine (and I would happen to agree with that) but he is obviously exhibiting a bias because he barely ever talks about that. And even if it was just for the sake of covering his own ass it would have been optically beneficial for him to bring up here. Not only does he not do that, he specifically contrasts it with ‘male/female dyads’ in saying that the state should not incentivize it. Which necessarily implies that the state should incentivize male/female. So while I don’t know with any certainty that his beliefs are inconsistent, how he’s coming across with them certainly is.

part of the issue is that Religion causes a fundamental misunderstanding of what sexuality really is. If you think about it from their perspective, the bible tells them being straight is godly, and being gay is sinful. Thus its set up as a choice from the very start. You arent gay by your nature, you are gay by choice from the perspective of the bible, Of course thats all nonsense, its not a choice, but thats the way many of these people see it. Thats why gay conversion therapy and shit existed for so long before it was banned. But in their minds, allowing gay marriage means condoning a sinful act of choice, where as disallowing it can help people to choose not to be gay. Its just a fucked up world view that comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of what sexuality is because they read it from a 2000 year old book. But if you do assume the bible to be true, at least you can see WHY their world view is that way.

Since I left the Roman Catholic Church 33 years ago (I got fed up up with their dangerously-REPRESSIVE atmosphere, and after going to the same church for 30 years, NEVER really felt like I was part of any "community" there), these days I pretty much don't give a S*** what ANY church says, does or thinks. I pray on my own, which, to me, is how it should be anyway. (Funny thing-- I was a church council president for 2 years at a different church, after getting THE HELL OUT of the Catholic church.) I feel like, if SOME church doesn't want to perform a given marriage ceremony, then those people SHOULD TAKE THEIR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE. ALL of it! Oh yeah, and a former client of mine, who was VERY "Catholic", told ME, he felt ALL churches should be TAXED. Why should they be tax-free organizations, while raking in piles of cash? Especially in this current era where RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE is actively working to oppress more and more people who aren't even part of their religions???

Quick correction. As far as our understanding of hunter-gatherers go, the vast majority are either semi-monogamous or relatively symmetrically polyamorous. Polygyny mostly took off in the first few thousand years of agriculture because of social hierarchies. And even then, if you look at how intense the laws were restricting women's sexuality, and requiring vows of chastity or outright castration for men in political circles, it's clear this was by force, not natural affinity. Polygyny is hard to maintain in a hunter-gatherer groups because of the inherent and visceral hierarchy it creates within men in the group. Hunter-gatherers were/are almost exclusively fiercely-egalitarian, and hierarchies are generally short-lived and used for making roles clear during something like hunting, or when making a specialty clear. And it's usually deferred leadership, not a dominance hierarchy. That is, the lead tracker doesn't lead the hunt by dominating the rest, but by showing more confidence and ability in tracking, so the others agree they would be best to lead the hunting group. Most have very specific etiquette when returning to the camp which is meant to dissolve this hierarchy as fast as possible. You are expected to play down your success by "insulting the meat". Some exchange equipment so that no individual can take credit. Generally the one who made the kill is NOT the one who returns with it. Others split up the kill before they take it back. Partially so it's easier to carry, but also because it diffuses the credit to the whole group. In a few tribes, there's a concept "women like meat", which apparently that double meaning holds in their language, because the women will say they will sleep with any man who comes back with meat, but know that the guys are going to distribute the kill to the others. They just like it as an excuse to get it on. For the groups that are monogamous, it often isn't sexually exclusive. They prefer one partner, but it's considered normal to try other partners from time to time. To restrict this is "control or declare ownership of your partner" which they consider extremely immoral. Polygynous species are very high in reactive violence (violent outbursts) because of the infighting that is often needed for this to work, and the dominant male in those cases is selected by male competition, not so much female preference. When a pro-social alpha does take power, they generally revert to polyamory. Humans have the lowest reactive violence amongst apes. Several orders of magnitude below Chimps, and even an order of magnitude lower than Bonobos. Most of our violence is proactive violence, which is used for hunting and war between tribes. We are very high in proactive violence. That combination is extremely rare, and indicates how imperative it was to reduce fighting within the tribe. I just wanted to clarify this, because the notion that "our natural state is polygyny" is what slips a lot of men into some really toxic mentalities that I want to help men avoid. I myself used to be "red pill" before that was a thing, and for this exact reason. Learning about bonobos and hunter-gatherers helped pull me out.

Great comment but a bit high brown for this discussion or as an explainer to likes of Ben Shapiro style "reasoned" bigotry. State of nature appeals are always a bit tenuous, even if they turn out to be (mostly) correct. Regardless of how our species might have evolved in the original context, it isn't the way things are now, and are not good reasons to restructure society nor parcel out/deny rights to some select (out) group. To paraphrase- that was then, this is now. 😁

I actually disagree with Kyle on this partially. You cannot nor should you be able to force churches or other religious institutions to perform gay marriages. The "if you provide marriages you can't discriminate" argument works with businesses that cater to weddings, but it doesn't work with religious institutions. For example, could a mosque be formed to perform a Jewish marriage ceremony, or an Orthodox Jewish synagogue be forced to perform a marriage between a Jew and a Christian? Not only would I consider this to be a violation of free association, but it almost certainly would never hold up in court under the Free Excercise clause. Freedom is a two-way street. Gay couples should have every right to be married, they shouldn't have the right to force a particular religious organization to perform the ceremony. Religious organizations are also allowed to discriminate under the law, as are private clubs (For example, if a synagogue does not want to allow non-Jews, a Christian can't sue to force them to let them join).

You probably don't read the comments but if you do then I have something to say that you need to hear: I appreciate how you make an attempt to hear the "other side" but it appears to me that you aren't actually hearing them, or perhaps you don't want to hear them. For example, when the subject of your criticism states their opinion in a coherent and understandable way you either immediately create a straw-man of their beliefs or dismiss their views without providing a compelling counter-argument, in an attempt to discredit their ideas and beliefs without actually outcompeting them. I've seen you do this with Jordan Peterson, Russel Brand, Ben Shapiro, and many others. It makes perfect sense why you would do this; you have an incentive to discredit them because it serves your agenda, and I have nothing against that! Push your agenda. Just do it in a more compelling and competent way. How do you do this? Actually listen to and understand their argument. And the "understanding" part is the most important. I hold many views that you would disagree with and I watch your videos to understand your opposing view but as I watch I learn that you aren't even contending with my actual beliefs or the beliefs of the subject, you just create bigoted straw-man to argue with. I don't know what your ultimate goals are and for all I know you want to live inside an echo-chamber so you might dismiss my advice out of hand because it won't serve your echo-chamber where all your views are perfect and anyone who disagrees is just a good-for-nothing uneducated bigot, but I believe it is extremely important to truly understand your opponents views and why they have those views and to not dismiss them without critical investigation of them. That's why I'm here in the first place ;)

Actually, hunter gatherers often practiced monogamy. Most Amerindian tribes (including the majority who were hunter gatherers) in perticular actually had largely if not solely monogamous marriages, which was also common elsewhere around the world in hunter gatherer societies.

I feel like I'm someone back eight to ten years ago writing this, but the point on not creating children is a massive dodge that makes no logical sense. Does Ben really think that in a society where gay marriage is not allowed that every gay or lesbian person is going to get straight married because they simply want to be married and have kids despite their revulsion at having a romantic and sexual relationship with someone of the opposite sex? Maybe a microscopic percentage would, if I'm generous to him. But really it would be all of the straight couples having kids, which means there would be no change in how many kids are born. Hell, you could argue that at worst in a society where gay marriage is allowed the number of kids born would be the same or it could be higher because gay and lesbian couples can use artificial insemination.

I've said this before but they are literally coming from a religious stance as to why they are opposed to gay marriage. The establishment clause of the first amendment has been interpreted that it calls for a separation of church and state. This is to protect people's religious rights. So, a person's religion should not be imposed on another person. If that's the case, aren't Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh imposing their religious beliefs on others? No religion should be allowed or used to take away basic human rights of equality.

The main part where Shapiro's logic falls flat is that it is ultimately based on the premise that marriage is solely about procreation, which is fundamentally wrong. You are completely able to procreate, both biologically and legally, even when not married. Similarly, people who are unable to procreate (e.g. people with medical conditions that affect their fertility) are still able to get married. In other words, marriage and procreation are not exclusively intertwined.

On top of that there are state laws that prohibit filling together their tax return if you are not legally married. These people dont want to follow personal freedom to its logical conlucsion.

3:05 Ben that's true for A LOT of our culture in the US. It's religious based. But civil society cannot, and will not, be based on cult logic that has a religious component. We cannot have a free and civil society based on arbitrary dogma that you were brought up to believe in some church or synagogue. We have to craft civil society out of dialog and mutual understanding...and empathy. Religion sometimes can help with this things, but when it makes people religious and impervious to listening, then it needs to be cut down at its root. Religion, overall, is poisonous to society because it revels in the supernatural, and things that can't be reliably discussed or debated.

Most hunter gatherer populations seem to have been mostly monogamous. I think the term is limited polygyny. (Lots of exceptions though, obviously.) I think it has a lot to do with the low size differential between human men and women fostering long-term pair bonding, which doesn't necessarily imply monogamy, but it does imply a man and woman sticking together long term to raise offspring. Combine that with frequent resource limitations, and you get a situation where monogamy was probably the norm. Sorry for the tangent, I love this show, I just also love evolutionary bio 😍

I ask once again. If marriage is about procreation. Then is he going to leave his wife when she reaches menopause? Does he believe people who can not get kids should not get married? Then again it's really an outdated concept anyway. You need sperm and an egg. That is all you need. You can obtain those without having to marry the previous owner of said sperm or egg. Same sex couple have been getting children for years now. Gay couple do not suddenly became straight because they can not marry. There just is no logical reason to be against this at all.

One other thing. Polygamy became truly dominant with settled agriculture and animal herding, untill early modern civilization and the enlightenment greatly reduced the practice. While many hunter gatherers did practice polygamy to various degrees, monogamous relationships were actually predominant if not universal more often then not, especially in the Americas.

4:20 This is all a red herring. This religious exemption doesn't apply to individuals. They can approve or disapprove of gay marriage all they want, it doesn't matter. The exemption is specifically to allow religious *institutions* to refuse to marry gay couples if it goes against their religion. And the state is not going to question those even if their religious text says otherwise.

It really boils down to “I don’t need to care about gay people who want to be culturally, civilly, or religiously married because I’m not gay, so why not outlaw it?” The minute something that they want to do something that is arguably considered immoral under their religious tradition, they will arbitrary change their religious views. If you have a moral code of any kind, that is supposed to be binding on your behavior, and it should make the world better in material ways, not arbitrary ways that appeal to arbitrary individual biases. There is no objective argument for worrying about other people’s behavior unless you can argue that that behavior hurst someone materially. And don’t tell me there is this thing called the institution of [straight] marriage that is harmed by gay marriage It’s like right-handed people outlawing scratching you ass with your left hand because they are afraid that the very fact that people are using their left hand to scratch their ass makes right handed ass scratching feel less special to right handed people (because they believe his told them to scratch their ass with their right hand). These people seem to be actually saying “it would be [arbitrarily] better if there were no gay people, therefore we need to stop them from sharing their property under a legal commune.”
