"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

The reason many religious people _think_ it’s different is they do not understand the science and think being gay is a choice. Since marriage is something that has been inherently religious, if one is speaking about a priest marrying someone its a bit different. Food and gas are secular things. The bible actually says marriage is between a man and woman. So if you have a priest who believes in the literal interpretation of the bible they may have religious grounds not to do it. I don't believe in that shit, but I feel that that is within the religious domain and thus it could be argued that it isn't the business of the government. Hi Kyle. I think a more apropos analogue would be the pharmacists who refuse to dispense morning after pills, condoms or other reproductive / gynecological products on the basis of their religious beliefs as it shows a) a more recent example that ties into the right’s recent obsession with what goes on in a person’s bedroom and b) that these people are not just excusing the commitment emotional harm but also irreparable physical harm on others in the name of their “religious” rights. I find it extremely scary that a pharmacist or doctor might end up refusing me service due to their religious beliefs and with the Overton window moving as far right as it has, it is not outside the realm of possibility that a right wing Supreme Court might hear a case re: pharmacists refusing to serve certain clients or drugs based on religious grounds and the Supreme Court holding that up as their constitutional right.

A gay couple wanted to view a house for sale, but the owners (a young Christian couple) sent them a message advising that they cannot allow them to view because of their beliefs. On one side, the majority of my colleagues argued that the owners have a right to their opinion and right to religious beliefs. I argued that it’s discrimination. What about kindness and compassion, they are a young couple wanting to buy their first home, what does their sexuality matter to the owners, it is just property anyway? If you don’t like someone because of their character fair enough, but this is just bullying to me. Morality is certainly not synonymous with religious beliefs.

Refusing service to a class of people because they are gay (or black, Hispanic, etc.) is discrimination, and because of the interstate commerce clause of the Constitution is open to government regulation. That regulation is guided by the equal protection clause. Refusing to express one's skills in a specific way (making a particular cake) that is against one's religious beliefs regarding the actions of another person (gay marriage, smoking pot, etc.) is protected under the First Amendment. As Kyle pointed out, Ben Shapiro is attacking the basis for the Civil Rights Acts altogether. (He, like many libertarians, are basing their claims implicitly on an extreme notion of property rights.) Yes, It's unfair of businesses to deny services to gay people, and to make people feel unwanted, but it's also unfair to be forced to twist ones honestly/deeply held religious beliefs. It causes deep psychological resentment/distrust/reflexive antogonism of leftists policy and authorities. And those "bigoted people" are the ones you have to get on board if you want to get REAL SYSTEMIC CHANGE in this country. If you expect to make a coalition of perfect people, you will end up very lonely.

Terrible analogy at the end. There is a huge difference in a baker refusing to make a cake and a restaurant owner refusing to serve someone for being gay. If the government forces a baker to bake a cake for a gay wedding they are forcing people to act in a way that is contrary to their beliefs. People hold genuine religious views and people are genuinely gay. But neither view point should be forced upon either of these two groups.

I hold the genuine religious view that tight wingers are more closely related to bacteria than to humans, and I reserve the religious right to force-feed hand sanitizer to any right wingers I encounter until they either evolve into humans or enter the past tense. You can't stop me because it's my genuine religious belief, and to dupl me would be forcing your beliefs upon me. Ben won't be fake crying this time.

The baker and the web designer have a very specific difference. One was asked to make a gay cake (aka an action took place) while web designer wants to put up a banner saying she will not serve homosexual couples. The scary distinction is that if they rule in her favor you don't even have to do anything to be refused service. Now that baker could just say fuck off I'm not even gonna make you a plain sheet cake. Very dishonest of Ben to reframe the story that way

I am an exmormon, the problem with polygamy is that it is nearly inseparable from abuse and dehumanization. Polygamous women are generally taught to view their husband as second to God, and they are married very young. It basically is a system in which one man builds a mini empire, and his wives are his childbearers and housekeepers. Generally polygamous communities are very difficult to escape as well. I want freedom in this country, but women and children in Polygamy are not really free.

Then that restaurant is wrong and should be sued. To be clear, I do think that if your service is essentially a form of art (like baking a custom cake) then you shouldn't be forced to bake it for the gay couple (you should just be boycotted out of business). But you should NOT be allowed to blanket refuse services like food that you serve to the public. So if the gay couple came in asking for a pre-baked cake-they should not be allowed to be denied because of their sexual orientation.

People like Ben Shapiro don't think deeply about consequences. He just looks at surface level and let's his free market and religious freedom ideals explain away all logic. He's the same guy who says just move away if your job is exploiting you.

I am a lefty and am happy that gay marriage is legal. But I don't think it'd be right to force a church to host a gay wedding. I know that religious freedoms are often overstated and overprotected, but you're talking about forcing an actual church here to put on a ceremony against their will. Who even wants to get married in a place that doesn't want them? Seems like a very rare situation that a gay couple would insist on getting married at a place that rejects them. Church's aren't really comparable to a bakery or a 711. It is literally a place of worship.

Kyle's bias always shines through on this topic. Because he personally doesn't believe in religion, he doesn't believe in freedom of religion. The compromise is perfect. The vast majority of bakers will bake a gay cake. You don't have a right to cake.

Gay marriage needs to be legal because marriage can affect your life and has legal implications, end of the story. However the comparison to the racist south back in the day doesn't hold up. There is no religion that says you can't serve black people, it was bigotry without reason that's protected. If your RELIGION says you can't do something it's protected. But if your feelings say you can't that's not protected. This is bigotry with reason that is protected. There are interpretations of religion that say you can't serve the gays in this context. Why do people keep relating these things? It's ignorant. If your religion says you're a Norse pagan and you cannot associate with burger King workers you're allowed to not associate with burger king workers. If your religion doesn't mention that specifically then it's not protected.

The Mormon Church's stance on black people in the past would disagree. Also Hinduism's caste system allows for discrimination based on family history. There's plenty of bigotry to be found in religion that can be argued should be protected on the grounds of religious freedom
