George Galloway's Full Address: • George Galloway | Full...
ABOUT GEORGE GALLOWAY:
Few contemporary politicians have attracted as much controversy as George Galloway. A Labour MP from 1987 to 2003, he was an outspoken critic of the policies of Tony Blair and New Labour, in particular the decision to invade Iraq. Fiery comments such as "the best thing British troops can do is to refuse to obey illegal orders" saw Galloway expelled from the Labour Party. But Galloway returned to the political fray by founding the Respect Party and winning Bethnal Green and Bow in the 2005 General Election. Mr Galloway re-entered Parliament in this March as MP for Bradford West and has recently provoked controversy and criticism with his comments on the rape charges against Wikileaks' Julian Assange.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Energetic, well informed and eloquent. He has an enviable ability to recall the minutiae of a wealth of topics - pertinent, or otherwise, to the topic at hand - and apply them with intelligent relevance. Perhaps sometimes a little too animated whilst speaking publicly, but this, I think, is to be attributed to his tendency to be emotionally invested in so many of the issues on which he speaks/debates. In other words, he genuinely cares. He speaks clearly, honestly, with conviction and authority. Authority borne of knowledge

For anyone wanting the actual facts, here was what Galloway actually said about the 19 year old Iranian being executed in an interview with Matthew Wright from PinkNewsUK. GG: “This is being used as part of the on-going propaganda against Iran...All the papers seem to imply that you get executed in Iran for being gay. That’s not true" MW: "His boyfriend was hung though, wasn’t he?" GG: "Yes, but not for being gay. For uh, committing sex crimes, uh, against young men." MW: "Right…" GG: "I mean, I’m against execution for any reason in any place, but it is important to avoid that propaganda" MW: "So you’re saying that his guy they want to deport should be deported because there is no risk of his sexuality, or he shouldn’t be deported because there is a risk?" GG: "He should not be deported not least because after all this Iranian propaganda he will be accused of being the source, or one of the sources. It would be ridiculous to deport him, and I don’t think he will be deported now." Now, mind you that what Galloway said here was 100% false. Mr Galloway’s claim that gay people are not executed in Iran is refuted by every reputable human rights body, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. When asked by gay civil rights groups to provide evidence for his claims, he provided none. So no he didnt say it was "Okay" but he did lie about the facts in an attempt to defend Iran's image.

I don't think so. Would most Venezuelan families be scattered around the work? I don't think so. Many of Chávez supporters during the 90s and early 2000s regret their decision of voting for him and many of them migrated to Colombia. This is why it is so important to have diversity in university campuses, so you actually know the history from the perspective of people who lived through it, or in this case, survived it. I'm just a humble Venezuelan girl with my family divided, but Oxford University seems like a perfect ecosystem for elitists who cannot understand the extent of the damage their ideas can cause.

People need to stop confusing opposition to gay marriage with homophobia. You can be in support of gay rights and opposed to gay marriage. They are 2 completely separate entities.
@alexallen6761
@alexallen6761 5 жыл бұрын
White Fang, I know. There is a difference between homophobia in the culture & supporting systematic homophobia. But these 2 differences also have a similarities too, they both cause inequality between the sexual orientations therefor both fall under the definition of homophobia. It's like saying green is a completely separate entity to blue, when half of green is made out of blue. People can break any meaning down into finer components but it's un-factual to say they are completely detached entities in a universe where everything is linked by relativity. But I understand what you were trying to say, we should judge someone's moral intentions their motives, not necessarily what they support. Some people may oppose gay marriage but don't have any intentions to cause inequality or division, because the human mind doesn't have to think logically.
@alexallen6761
@alexallen6761 5 жыл бұрын
@ali bazzi Homophobia doesn't literally mean a phobia of gay people. Homophobia is just an illiterate word that really means anti-gay. That what I believe White Fang's context was, but I can't mind-read, so I can only guess his context by using probability with no evidence on this. Anyway, You say they are less people who have gender dysphoria than people who describe themselves as gay. The statistics may be like that because gender dysphoria is classed as a different thing to homosexuality (even if there is a link), so the math doesn't have to be balanced. Also, I doubt that there are more straight people who pretend to be gay, than gay people being in the closet pretending to be straight. If it's true that a proportion of people pretend to be gay, then the gay people in the closet must compensate and counter-balance the maths on this.

How can you care SO MUCH about what someone's choice to marry who they want, and how can you agree that a government has the right to force people not to marry who they want, and yet claim that believing in such a thing isn't against gay people?

Rich kids win by default. Those pitching questions here are the ELITE of tomorrow. They have already succeeded and will win by default. I put it to anyone that if Galloway was addressing kids who had strived to get to that stage against all odds, ie working class kids, he'd find that they were much better informed than those rich kids. It's suits their purpose to be ignorant. The status quo guarantees them a future in spite of their abject idiocy.

“It is always the old question of the bound man who having managed to live in spite of his bonds thinks he lives because of them. We are used to living under a government which takes over all that energy, intelligence and will which it can direct for its own ends; and it hinders, paralyses and suppresses those who do not serve its purpose or are hostile - and we think that everything that is done in society is carried out thanks to the government, and that without the government there would no longer be any energy, intelligence or goodwill left in society.” - Errico Malatesta

Hi Edward. As a Venezuelan I agree with you. It is so frustrating to hear people talk about things they don't know at all. And when you confront them with the facts and figures, then they will say you are manipulated by "the international media". Incidentally, Galloway is not an Oxford Professor. Far from it. He was just invited by the Oxford Student Union to participate in a debate.

-In 2021, 65.2% of the country's inhabitants lived in poverty according to the study, produced by the social investigations unit of the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello (UCAB). When measured solely by income levels, 94.5% of the population lives in poverty. -Venezuela a population of 28 million has recorded 7 million people fleeing the country. -The richest 10% in the country make an average of $553.20 a month, the poorest live on $8 a month. Chavez and Maduro have eviscerated the nation, the only people in Venezuela who truly support him are the uneducated masses who still believe in the socialist dream. Guess who get's to live a life of luxury? Chavez's kids. You cannot suggest it's the US's fault for Venezuela woes, it's the corruption, and the blind following of the PSUV that has destroyed the nation.
@vasconcelossentimento
@vasconcelossentimento Жыл бұрын
is it not the US' fault for, AT LEAST, some of damage in Venezuela today? A crippling embargo and international isolation, just like with Cuba, a coup attempt just last year and constant political pressure of undemocratic movements like Guaidó to snatch power away from someone who was ellected? Yes, Venezuela is in a terrible state, yes the socialist leaders have made several mistakes and had corruption in the govt., but Chavez' government succeeded in reducing inequality and fighting power concentration and kicking out american interests. Just think, why would the US try blatant undemocratic and violent coups against Chavez and then still try those TO THIS VERY DAY? Its textbook american interest interventionism in the third world.

Galloway is a character and has the gift of the gab. His oratory style is almost entirely rhetorical though which makes ‘debating’ him pointless. Only way you can ‘beat’ someone like this in debate is to deploy your own rhetoric as skilfully or aggressively. Good luck with that. C Hitchens, a skilled rhetorician himself, was just about capable of putting Galloway on the back foot.
