I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GOING THROUGH ALL THE STEPS. Its been at least 10 years since I worked with clay. I used to squeeze it to reduce my canes. I guess you can just roll this one. I didnt know they had electric pasta machines.lol. Mine is a hand crank.

Thanks. I'm glad you liked my video. I got a motor for my pasta machine years ago when I was going to a lot of workshops and had to condition a LOT of clay. Now I'm so glad I did because my hands and wrists just can't handle it anymore. As long as your pasta machine has the 2 holes around where your hand crank goes in, you can use a motor. Every pasta machine I have had had these holes but I've seen some that didn't. It's a great investment!

At 40:30, you can make the choice of which direction to go, dark to light or light to dark. After cutting the fronds in half, if you put the sides together one way, it's light to dark, but flip them so the other sides are together, it will be dark to light. Learned that the hard way, when I planned a dark to light and ended up with a light to dark feather. Loved the tutorial anyway!

Thanks for sharing. At 29:40 I showed you to stack 4 pieces on top of each other. This forms the "tip" of the feather. From what you said about your's being upside down, you must have put the center vein on upside down which would put the "tip" on the bottom. The vein should not be as far up as the "tip" but begin just below it. If you try this again, just be aware of where this "tip" is when you put your vein on. That should give you the look you wanted as long as you use the darker strip for your "tip" and work your way to the light. Hope this helps! Keep practicing!

I've seen other feather tutorials, some have 4 at the 'tip', some 3, some 2, and some only 1. And the fact remains, if you place the two sides together on one side, the fronds go up, and if you flip them and place them together on the other side, the fronds go down. Not flipping them top to bottom, this is a side to side flip only. It changes the direction.

Just take your time with each step. Don't rush like I sometimes do. I had to re-do my final Poinsettia cane because I didn't take time to plan better. It takes a while to make the perfect cane but with some practice, you can do it. Don't give up!

I love this feather cane. (Actually, I love most of the canes I see or make.) My problems really start when I have made a pretty (or clever) cane. I admire the cut end, but can't decide what to use it for ...... I look at them and smile, I cut them in sections, and reduce them so I have a collection of similar canes of different sizes. It seems that I make canes as a hobby! Early in the video, you said to reduce the three graded canes to about a quarter of an inch before flattening them - how big (small) is the finished feather if you do that? The one you made is quite large, and you said it isn't easy to reduce because of its shape, which I can easily believe. Thanks for all the great videos.

Glad you like it! It's been so long since I did this video I would have to watch it myself to see what I said! :) If you have experience reducing canes, the feather cane can be reduced. I've done it but it is difficult to explain to beginners which is the major part of my audience. This finished cane was about 2" long. I reduced it into various sizes down to about 3/4". I'm like you. I love to make canes but then don't every make anything our of most of them!

I love this cane Gayle, beautifully demonstrated as always. Is it too late to ask a question or can anyone else answer? Why do you squish the ends of the cane at the early stage (11:20) when after reducing the 3 sections of cane the ends are not going to show or even be used? What am I missing?

Thanks for your question. Squeezing the ends of the cane before reducing helps to keep the inside of the clay to not cave in and distort your image. Remember the outside of the cane reduces faster because of the heat of your hands. Hope this helps.

It seems that I did this on one of my videos but I'll have to look to see what I can find. I don't have a feather cane to reduce and I don't plan on making another one anytime soon. I would just press in from all sides like any other irregular shaped cane. Press without distorting the initial shape. If you clay is conditioned, it should "move" well. Sorry I can't be of any better help. I'll look at my videos and see if I can find where I reduced the one I did. The problem is I'll have to watch a lot of them to find it and my time is valuable right now!

It's difficult to reduce because of it's shape. That is why it is best to make it close to the size you want for your finished feather. However, I have reduced this cane before by "smooshing" (technical term) from the sides. It can be done with patience.

Can you make a Skinner blend without a pasta machine? I have tried but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. I love crafts of all types and I am not sure I want to spend more on a craft that I will only do occationally.

It is possible to do a Skinner Blend without a pasta machine but it will take much longer. What you would need to do is be sure that there is only 1 color on each side. (EX: Color 1 on the left and Color2 on the right) Roll it to about 1/8". Then fold up in half still keeping 1 color on each side. If you don't keep this orientation, it will all blend together and won't be a Skinner Blend. (I hope that makes sense) You would have to repeat this 30 or 40 times so you have to be patient. Hope this helps!

On my pasta machine, (your basic one) my seven is my largest setting and yours is thin. How would we convert our settings to fitt your?

Just reverse the numbers. However my machine settings are 0 to 9. Each machine is different so it's difficult to tell you exactly how to convert. Your #7 is similar to my #0 & #1. Your #1 is probably close to my #8 & 9. Other than that I can't tell you. However, you can think of 6-7 as the thickest, 4-5 as medium, and the rest would be various thin settings. I hope that helps.
