Love this movie! The difference in subtitles and audio is most likely because the subtitles are more directly translating the japanese audio while they probably rewrote the script for the english dubbing.

this is why I prefer to watch my anime in Japanese with subtitles. I like subtitles because I have auditory processing disorder but the difference between spoken and written dialog causes me problems.

This is actually based on a book series by Diana Wynne Jones!! I adore both the books & this movie! ❤ It’s my favorite Studio Ghibli movie! Diana was interviewed about the movie & said that Hayao Miyazaki did a fantastic job with the movie & actually understood her vision in the book which makes me love the movie even more! There’s a lot of differences but they’re both such amazing stories! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 😊

This is my favorite of the Studio Ghibli films. And yes, Sophie's spell is related to self confidence. The more confident she gets, the younger she becomes and eventually breaks her spell because of it. Also fun fact about Howl in the books: Howl is Welsh.

I wholeheartedly recommend reading the book (and the whole series by Diana Wynn Jones). It is my favorite book, and you can appreciate it as it's own story even after watching the movie.

This film is based on a book that is part of a trilogy. In the Book it is discovered that Sophie is a witch and that she can break her spell but unconsciously she does not want to. Furthermore, let's say the relationship with Howl is more violent. And Howl is originally from our reality. There are more changes they made to the movie but I guess it was to give it a more familiar feel.

In the book, Holw knew from the beginning that she was under a spell, he lifted but the effects persisted because was Sophie who maintained the spell, she's actually a powerful witch

Cuz it’s from the novel, so many things didn’t explained quite clearly The whole war thing begins with the missing prince, he was missing between the borders of the two kingdoms Howl have two fake identities, which from these two kingdoms respectively, so you can see both two kingdoms are summoning the wizards and witches to attend the battle And yes, in the novel the witch of the waste is kind of like crazy ex-girlfriend, and howl is a playboy to be fair

“I wonder why the subtitles are so different” Those are more direct translations of the Japanese dialog. When you dub you gotta change some things to fit the lip flaps of the animation. Those English subtitles are there for people watching it in original Japanese audio.

I have a feeling the disconnect between what the subs say and what they're saying is cause the subtitle track is for the Japanese version. I.e these are the subs you would get if you were watching it in Japanese. As opposed to the "dubtitles", which would be subs(closed captions?) that line up w/ the dub lines. B/c translations for dubs are often not the same (usually due to things like localization or needing to match lipflaps and the such) as the script/translation for the subs. So you're watching the dub with the Japanese "subs", thus they don't quite line up.

Howl's moving Castle is the first book in a three book series. there is very little of the book in the movie. Ok follows it iffily from the beginning to the slime moment. Then the movie goes on a completely different path than the book. They deleted characters, combined characters, the entire war thing happened between books, the curing of Turnip and how Sophie's spell is broken is different in the book. Like VERY different. Mikel is Michael and is like 16 or 17, an orphan Howl allowed to stay there. He just wondered into Howl's place and never left. Like Sophie did. Sophie's mother is actually her stepmother and isn't that much older than Sophie. I seriously recommend the books. They are quick reads. Like gradeschool level.

While I adore this film (it's a masterpiece), I'm kind of sad that there's very little of the original story left in this retelling. The book is very funny and takes a lot of fairytale tropes and turns them on their head: like that Sophie is the oldest of three sisters, so everyone knows that she isn't going to go anywhere in life. She believes this so hard that it becomes a selffulfilling prophesy, until the Witch of the Waste turns her into an old lady and she runs away from home, because she doesn't want to scare her family. There's a whole thing with Howl having the reputation that he eats the hearts of young girls, and it turns out that he doesn't eat the hearts, he breaks them! He woos girls, but as soon as they fall in live with him, he looses interest in them. He is "heartless" because he gave his heart to a falling star that would have died otherwise (calcifer). The deal is that Calcifer gets to live, and Howls magic gets stronger, because he can use Calcifers magic as well. I wont retell the whole book here, but Sophie being a bossy and nosy old lady, butting heads with Howl who is very vain and wants to run away from a lot of responsabilites and has to trick himself into doing the right thing is VERY funny. Sophie saving Howls and Calcifers lives in the end by speaking life into them is touching. Sophie has a lot more agency in the book, as it turns out she is quite the powerful witch herself (spoiler, sorry). The Witch of the Waste is much more terrifying in the book, and the scarecrow has a very different role too. Sophies deal with Calcifer means, that when she saves Calcifer and Howl by breaking their contract, her own curse is lifted. (Howl has been trying to lift her curse, but she kind of enjoyed being an old lady who could be a bit rude and not always worry about what other people thought of her, so she unconsciously fought to stay old until the very end when she realised that staying old didn't save her from falling in love with Howl anyway). The writing in the book is very clever, and while I love the movie, I feel sad, that we dont get the actual story from the book. People are missing out on a great story! :) The author of the book is Dianna Wynne Jones. Highly recommend! :)
