If they were honest about what the Bible says rather than bending it to fit societies changes thy would be insisting that only virgins were allowed to be married in church. Totally agree. I’m Christian, gay and fine with Christian doctrine. And yes, we have to deal with the fact that non Christians marry in churches while not obeying any of the Bible’s teachings and still expect a church wedding. I’m against it. I have more hassle in employment for being gay, but for more hassle outside of work for being Christian. One of my good friends is a Muslim lesbian and she finds life lonely. Because Jesus’ teachings on God’s relationship to humanity is core to the Christian faith, and the image of God as a Groom and us as the Bride runs through the whole Bible. Jesus refers to it many times. So it’s non negotiable. You’re wrong. The c of e is dwindling in size as are two other denominations who teach liberal teaching. However, all the other denominations - the ones who teach the full Gospel - are thriving. When people turn to God for soliciting, comfort and a way out of their problems, they are choosing the churches that teach the sorts of things Calvin believes in. You wouldn’t think it but the data is clear. The liberal denominations will disappear in 20 years if they continue as they are and the other denominations will just boom.

As a gay Christian, I agree with the doctrine but not that lgbt people have equal rights in reality. Gay people are murdered regularly in the uk in homophobic attacks - most of which don’t come onto the mainstream news, and in most of the uk we face discrimination and harassment in employment. I now work for gay employers and so glad that God has provided these jobs for me because I was hating looking for another job with a straight employer and straight colleagues.

The Bible is not particularly clear about whether men can marry each other, though the practice obviously wasn't done in ancient times. Only in the Book of Timothy is there a reference to homosexuality that is not associated with another sin (most references to homosexual behavior involve condemnations of prostitution and incest, but one in particular in the Book of Timothy does not and the persistent equivocation of homosexual and heterosexual sin throughout the 3000 years of Biblical literature prior to Timothy and during the life of Jesus would indicate that he was just one misled Rabbi.) What is clear, in the Bible, however, is that divorce is entirely inappropriate, as of the life of Jesus, except in the instance of a group annulment. The Church of England was founded specifically for the purpose of allowing divorce, in spite of the entirety of Europe agreeing that it was unbiblical. Why oppose modernity with homosexuals but not heterosexuals? This wasn't a homophobic rant. It was a valid position to discuss, from a Biblical perspective, but I think it highlights a double standard that has been ignored for too long between homosexuals and heterosexuals. God does not have some particular beef with gays. It's a ridiculous, ahistorical, amoral viewpoint promoted by ignorant and manipulative clergy, many of whom supported race based slavery, indulgences, antisemitism. And Jesus was gay.

We can't change the doctrines of religion. What doctrines though? Christianity split into various denominations because people disagreed over the teachings, and some adopted more progressive positions while others adopted more conservative ones. Yes there are disagreements, and that is good because we can learn from each other and most Christians do. I go to the Taizé community in France which is ecumenical and non Christians are welcome and people of other faiths are welcome. We learn from each other. But some things are non negotiable. The commandments we are given and the guidance we are given for a better life are non negotiable. Do not steal. Do not be envious of what the next guy has. It’s so that our personal growth continues.

This is not a ‘hate’ filled rant. He points out that all people deserve respect and it being important to hear others views. The Church should have the right to align itself with its theology. No one is forced to subscribe to its teaching, we ALL have freedom to do as we wish. We shouldn’t demonise any portion of society for holding a different view, free speech, free expression should be allowed & as he says, Christians are called to be in ‘in the world, but not of the world’. He is simply advocating that the church upholds its teaching… We are all free to embrace or reject that.
