No he did his own research and found that you just have to repeat a word as they do in TM, a word that means something to you, could be peace, joy whatever works for you. Bravo for him. We are all human beings and we have been different races so your Caucasian rant is pointless. By the way I am Indian I am extremely pleased with his research. No race has a monopoly on the truth ....

Ideas come from what people call God, creative Source, the One, the All Intelligence, however people choose to refer to this. The ownership of ideas? Go get a room and leave me out of this discussion; if meditation can't be done in peace as I want to do it, then I can meditate in peace by myself with a whole lot of other people who would do meditation just like me because it just occurred to people out of the blue ie; Source, God, The Circular Reason that made that mind that ego seems to think should be the controlled linear property of limitations of which I do not place on self.

Yes, I am so exciting to hear him. And more powerful, at least for me was my decision several years ago. I've told myself: "You DON'T need science to validate and scientificly prove what is good or bad for you". That was most powerful decision in my life.

Wow, so disappointed when this segment was over. What an in-depth discussion regarding the MIND, BODY connection. I feel that when the MIND and BODY are connected, there is HEALth and natural HEALing that is on a subconscious level that translates to the conscious MIND and BODY. When there is the disconnect, is when there is dis ease, "DISEASE" that requires treatment on a natural level, but it becomes sidetracked in a natural and holistic format with the attack of surgery along with drugs. This is only within my most humblest of opinions. This was fascinating!
@emilywest1302 Жыл бұрын
It has taken me a while to heal from surgery for cancer. Then doctors recommended a horrible drug which reduces estrogen so much I was in pain from varicose veins. I needed the surgery, but I am now cancer free. by quieting my mind I will stop the cancer from returning despite doctors trying to manipulate me with the fear of high risk of reoccurence. So, as Dr Benson says, surgery may often be needed. but after that the mind can do much. It is very destructive when reductionist doctors try always to scare. One has to be strong and know they are often wrong but have their uses.

I'm so happy to have seen this - one of the pioneers of mind body reality in Western medicine. Notice how he had to explain/ justify that the Cartesian division ''really had no validity''. Amazing things have been done by 'conventional' western medicine for sure... so this is a balanced and reasonable look at the research.

Like to hear that anything is possible with the genome and mind body. It's all to do with what genes are turned on or off. Dis regulation of stress genes is common in disease, switching them off by reducing stress is a way to treatment without negative side effects.

Truly like this man, what a sweetheart, you can see his soul peeking through ;-) The content is very interesting indeed. So much to teach to those who haven't known about mind/body healing. I do have a "However!". And that is ~ A person who is holding early childhood development trauma in their bodies, for decades (without realizing it) and there are many ~ most of these wonderful modalities don't help permanently...the reason being that as an infant and for quite a while afterwards, we humans haven't yet brains that are developed, we cannot 'think' ourselves out of the instinctual survival drives...which manifest in fight, flight, freeze. Okay, won't go on about this. The thing is ~ It's mandatory to get to the very foundation, to the places in ourselves that were wired, when we were utterly dependent. When, if our main caretaker did not provide the bonding so necessary to implant 'safety' within the child....'security'....via reflecting back and 'attuning' to the child......Well, the 'fight' isn't in position yet, so it's usually 'overwhelm' feeling in danger with no means of self soothing anywhere in place, and often a huge 'shut down'. SO, learning the language of the nervous system, learning how to get our own selves out of overwhelm and shutdown, taking the time to create a feeling of 'safety' within that for so many was never ever there...needs to happen in order for change to stick. We kinda come at ourselves for healing from the wrong end so much of the time. The mind isn't the place to go, the body most definately is. It holds all we need to know, in order to unravel the places we've been holding onto for decades. Okay, okay, i'll stop. Maybe this makes sense to some of you. Psychotherapist, artist and presently a Student in the Learning the Language of the Nervous System, taught years ago and still is by Peter A. Levine. Taking a course with his student, Irene Lyons. Again, thank you Herbert Benson....What you are explaining is long overdue for so many. ty ty xox

There isn't a scientific explanation of what to do because the technique is not science. The science is in the analysis of the changes going on in the body as a result of regular meditation. There are lots of places online which explain the relaxation response, search for "relaxation response technique" in google, I just found one on some AOL site, Don't get lost in the simplicity of this technique with regards to it's effectiveness,, it is just that... simple,, but effective. hope this helps

He has borrowed the entire technique of meditation called Transcendental Meditation by a great teacher Maharishi Mahesh. Isn't it plagiarism ?
@Addictedtobleeps Жыл бұрын
Nobody 'owns' spirtualism (if you want to call it that). Maharishi was inspired by his teachers, and so on, the lineage went down all the way to the Buddah. Herbert Benson was one of the original researchers (back in the 60's) who researched throughly what benefit the Buddahs teachings have on our well-being. He's spread the word and science for a better, happier society, here in the West. And unlike TM, you don't have to pay for that privelage, which should be a human right.

Benson, Herbert: (1921-2022) Cardiologist and bad psychologist, known for the ‘relaxation response’, the psychological equivalent of bottled tap water and the financial equivalent of printing money. Thus, following the following time worn formula, Benson helped thousands to realize peace, relaxation, and to enthusiastically part with their money. Below is an outline of his winning formula, similar to real estate investing: Create Bad Idea: Staring at a doorknob makes you relaxed. Write Bad Book: about how staring at a doorknob makes you relaxed. Create Bad Institute: teaching others (for a fee) how staring at a doorknob makes you relaxed. Lather and repeat with more bad books, a bigger institute, and a bigger bank account from Dr. Mezmer's Bad Psychology Dictionary at doctormezmer.com

Chinmay, I suggest you read Benson's book 'The Relaxation Response'. He makes it very clear that he credits his technique to the study of various contemplative practices of the world's religions (starting with TM by the way which is from India). The RR is nothing more than a distillation of the elements in those practices to elicit a beneficial physiological response. So chill out and meditate my friend if after 2 years you're sill angry.
