Who wouldn't be excited to compete on the world stage and then despite the fact he achieved British Olympics magic with the longest ski jump currently and yet he gets banned from ever competing again. And why? Because they believed he was bringing the Olympics into disregard. I thought the Olympics was all about representing your country and coming from all backgrounds and achieving the impossible. Honestly! Considering how he has been treated he just seems to take in his stride which blows me away, his patience and his composure!

I was living in Calgary and we like a good underdog. This guy, along with the Jamaica Bobsled Team, were the only and probably last true amateurs at a former amateur showcase event that I now refuse to watch. As excited as we were in the leadup to the games, the politics and shenanigans was sickening and when it was offered the 2026 version without even having applied, the city refused.

Working on building sites the conversation about who do you think is best sports person often comes up, had I always answer Eddie the Eagle, for two reasons, with virtually no help he qualified and made it to the games, but more importantly he had the stamina to overcome those who were actively trying to stop him and work against him in any way possible, including the Olympic game organisers, they are the ones who should be ashamed at what they did to try and stop the flying Eagle.

What a fantastic man Eddie is. He was fortunate enough to compete against Matti Nykänen the then world champion who Famously said to Eddie, "The difference between us is that you are expected to lose but I am expected to win" That described fame and it eventually killed Matti with the pressures it bore.....alcoholism, drugs, violence and infamy......while Eddie lives on. I loved his take on the Chinese Olympics. "Athletes have trained all their lives for this, politics should not come into it"

BRILLIANT interview of an all-round great man. Hats off to Eddie for doing what he did. (And shame on those stuffy British officials for not allowing him any further chances). About 3 years ago I visited Innsbruck in Austria.
