I have to add some stuff here. I have known a lot of sports men but have never known anybody who made people feel as special and uplifted as they do after after meeting JC. He has such natural warmth and connection with people. I have no business connection with him, but have had so much feedback in the business world. If you need a guest speaker at any event then he is the best value you will find. He talks to EVERYONE and charms the old folks in such a lovely way. This is a special man.

Bernard Manning said John Conteh was the best after dinner speaker in the country. I played golf with his son James many years ago in a pro am. He was a golf pro and a thoroughly decent gentleman and great company on the course. John obviously brought him up well.

After competing the elite end of light heavyweight over almost a decade, don't forget John isn't a ko merchant, (I know contehs well), and it was 15 rounds in his era, it changed 5 yrs after retirement. Has all his faculties, very articulate, businessman like. Testament to the great movement and best jab the UK has seen. His brother is hard as nails too, a distinguished French Foreign Legionnaire, Frank. He's about on social media too. Deadly but same as john, nicest guy in building.

I used to play football with Johns older brother Tony when we were in St Kevin's school in Kirkby in the 1960s. He was a very good player, and in the same house. He lived in Westhead Avenue back then. John was a year behind. The school had everything tennis courts, Gymnasium, Rugby Football and Cricket pitches. And a swimming pool. Sadly the school that was only 25 years old was demolished for a giant housing estate. I told an old friend of Johns, Eddie B. about this interview - Kirkby holds a little record as providing two winning captains of the European Cup Champions, pre champions league. Phil Thompson and Dennis Mortimer, who both attended Brookfield Comprehensive in Kirkby and captained Liverpool and Aston Villa to victory in the 1980s

Growing up, John was never off the telly. Question of Sport, Parkinson and of course Superstars. He had tons of charisma. Saw him in Blood Brothers in the 80's. I have wondered what became of him. Glad he is still so fit and healthy and doing well. One memory I have of fighting, was whilst sitting on his stool between rounds, the gorgeous girl with the round number walked past him. Conteh looked her up and down 😂.

Should have done so much more John broke his right hand in a non-title fight in America in '75 against Willie Taylor he was never quite the same after that. I'd have favoured him over the WBA champ at the time Victor Galindez in a unification bout but it never happened there was also talk of John fighting world middleweight champion the legendary Carlos Monzon in '76 again it never happened. Was robbed in '78 against Mate Parlov and again in is first fight with Matthew Saad Muhammad although being dropped twice in the 14th round he did enough to take the decision. They talk about John's warmth here well he's a scouser good people.

Conteh is the perfect antidote to the anti boxing brigade. Sharp, eloquent and incisive. For me the greatest British boxer. I think his celebrity status caused his career to suffer in the latter years, but the left hook off a treble jab he landed on Matthew Saad Muhammed in their first fight shines a light on this man's ability.
