Jas Athwal is the new Labour MP for Ilford and was formerly the Leader of the council for Redbridge in east London. He was exposed as a slum landlord who didn't even have lettings licences for his properties. He is of course blaming his lettings agent. I have a slumlord house at the back of me have been battling with Redbridge council to prosecute the landlord (of the r-o-special privileges) for non-compliance of lettings legislation, and deception of the council by giving false information. The council has done nothing, but no surprise when even Athwal was breaking the law for years.

Lots of people can't get a mortgage for various reasons, where do they go if landlords are chased away! All it does is make life harder for them with more competition for the rental properties that are still available pushing rents up even higher, and rightly so, because the remaining landlords are taking on more risk with the tenants. Not all landlords are raking it in, if they were, there would be lots more of them.

Government should not legislate to effectively make Private, rented property - Social housing. ALL rented property is ' temporary ' Its Govt' and a tenants OWN responsibility to secure - buy or rent Social Housing. Just because there isn't enough property, partly due to excess demand, immigration and failure to build, Private landlords should not be made the scapegoat. It will come back to bite tenants, unfortunately.

If anyone deported ever returns and unlawfully enters the country, and is convicted of unlawfully entering the country, he or she should automatically earn a ten-year prison sentence without parole or time off for good behavior. Key to this, whether here temporarily for asylum or here as a new citizen, will be the requirement to swear an oath of allegiance that includes all of these points. ANY violation of that oath, even one so simple, as verbally harassing someone because their customs are different than one's own, once reported to the authorities, will require the violators deportation to their country of origin upon a guilty plea or finding of guilty in a court of law.

@oldshiny3012 this is called risk of doing business. If landlord can easily pass on all of his risks on tenants and tenants have no say, it is unfair. If every landlord gets 10 viewers on his property per day - it is unbalanced market. If landlord can evict tenants in no time just because he wants to premiumize the rent by 20% but tenant can't cause symmetrical inconvenience to landlord - this is unbalanced market. Therefore any law that tilts the balance back is good

I don’t know why they keep making such a thing about mould unless it is caused by damp or a leak it is probably caused by the tenant. When I was working in Europe and staying in rented properties, it is stipulated that you must leave windows ajar for a couple of hours per day to air the place, therefore not allowing the air that we breath out to create moisture and then mould. As for the Lib Dem lady wanting the airbnb people to lose money, if they are making loads of money, as she suggests, they are not as affected by all these targeted attacks, the people that are losing money are the buy to let landlords who do not make a lot of money. The actual rules being applied are tantamount to extortion by the government, as this is the ONLY business where you are taxed on your turnover and then can only claim a maximum of 20% of your costs, NO OTHER BUSINESS WOULD SURVIVE!!

They did this in New Zealand under the Ardern government. Was a total disaster. Massive rental sales by landlords, big increases in rent as a result. The new government is now winding back the clock to what it was before. Same will happen in in the U.K. As soon as you take away the incentive to buy a rental and provide someone a home, they simply put the money into a safer investment. Landlords do not throw out good tenants.
