So many times people say they can worship God any way they want. Doesn't God want us to be happy, failing to understand that we want to make God happy.

I’ve been trying to reconcile the instrumental worship issue for months. When you use the argument of silence, you say we can’t use the Old Testament to justify instruments. Yet here you are using Old Testament examples to justify acceptable worship-the place that commands the use of instruments. I sense a significant amount of eisegeses going on. I’m honestly wanting to do the right thing, but I’m having a very hard time justifying silence as evidence of anything. “Be silent where the Bible is silent in not in the Bible.” I’m a church of Christ worship leader of over 20 years.

They used the Old Testament to show God’s attitude toward man’s behavior, not to show what God’s commands are for today.

You are right. There is a lot of eisegesis going on here. The use of Eph 5:19 and Col 3 to say acapella singing in worship alone is a major stretch. First of all the context is daily living not patterns for worship. SEcondly the root of the word psalm is to pluck or twitch a string on an instrument. In fact psalm, ode, and hymn are used for our singing. I am yet to hear any delineation of the differences. Psalm was used with the understanding that the 1st century Jews had of what a psalm was. Old testament worship used psalms played with instrumental music. (psalm 150 and many more passages) That was perfectly acceptable to God. Now you hear that psalm changed its meaning in the new testament.????? This issue has been used to divide the body of Christ. God help us to be united rather than divided. Additionally many other issues have brought division, I.E. singing solos, christmas/easter celebrations, one cup vs. many, etc. Let us worship Him in Spirit and in Truth, and truth demands proper exegesis and not arbitrarily making statements not substantiated by biblical facts.

David "Praised" God. David "Worshiped" God. I think a Podcast on this would clarify what Praise is and what Worship is.

2 Tim 3 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for DOCTRINE, for reproof, for correction, for INSTRUCTION in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” All means all….. so when we examine the OT we can use what we see and apply it to our worship today, for our time as well. So often people say that because the NT basically doesn’t address worship specifically, that we really don’t have any prescribed manner in which to do it today. I vehemently disagree. Actually if you read through the New Testament you will see the phrase the “tabernacle of David”…. What is that and what did David do there? I believe scripture and the psalms shows he worshipped there. Actually it references David going in and sitting before the presence of the Lord….. Where was the manifest presence of God? The ark. Only the high priest could do this, so I believe that scripture shows David had access even though he was not a Levitical priest. He did this through worship which is a model for the New Testament believer. When the Psalms speak of clapping your hands, and singing, and making in Joyful Noise, I believe that is all prescriptive methods on worship. Nadab and Abihu were killed for offering strange fire, and the scripture also tells us that God is the same yesterday today and forever, so if throughout the entire old Testament he expecting things to be done a certain way, and even killed Nadab and Abihu, as well as Uzza for stretching out his hand and touching the ark, I’m pretty sure he still has an opinion on how worship is supposed to be done and that there is a manner, and boundaries in which it is expected to be done. Obviously there are things that may change within the boundaries based on cultural differences, times, etc… (ie pianos weren’t around, but string instruments are specifically mentioned so it would fall within that category). The main issue is that you guys are spot on, in that we now have young people saying that you can cage fight on stage and that is worship unto the Lord. That just shows how pervasive and absurd is the erroneous, false doctrine that is the idea that you can worship God however you want. It has never been that way since the beginning of time with many examples throughout scripture showing us that. It is patently absurd to think that the God who never changes is somehow now of a different mindset with regards to how we are to worship him. It’s interesting to note as well that the only time the scripture says God is seeking something, in the entire Bible, is when Jesus tells the woman at the well he is seeking worshipers who will worship him in “spirit and in truth” everyone likes to talk about the spirit part but no one likes to discuss that there must be truth in our worship. Not your truth or my truth but THE truth.

Excellent points. Something from NT that has truly convicted me. 1 Cor 11:1 “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ” Paul then immediately goes into when Praying or Prophesying of covering or uncovering your head based on the two genders. The main reason - 1 Cor 11:10 “It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels.” Because of the Angels - Blows my mind away that this is the reason. I usually think of things in earthly terms but as followers of the Lord we must according to Jesus worship in spirit and in truth. John 4:24 “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” Must means you have to, it is not an option. A direct command from Jesus to his disciples about how to worship God. Hebrews 12:22-29 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. 25 See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken-that is, created things-so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.” Plainly put, we all need to repent in our worship (public & private) of our Lord.

I see know Biblical authorization for a pitch pipe in worship. What chapter and verse authorizes this ? It looks like to me that the COC assumed that God would accept the pitch pipe. The Bible is silent on pitch pipes.... so NO pitch pipes.

Okay, so we get rid of paperless hymnals, song books, pew bibles, buildings to worship in, no pews, no pulpits, powerrpoint presentations and lights where we worship. Those are aids in worship not disobedience. We would have to throw out black boards, bathrooms, etc. If you feel that pitch pipes are not authorized, go to your preacher and discuss it with him. The bible is silent on many things, but we use the Book of Romans to find expediency. There is no scripture to authorize the specific hour we are to worship, etc.

@@thedynamicsolo4232 I really could care less about the pitch pipe. The point that I am making is that when you start down the road of legalism it never ends. You can find something wrong with everything if you want to. If you are going to slam people for music, then DONT use the pitch pipe and then condemn everyone else. The COC is certainly not above reproach as the COC thinks. I know too many of the COC members and the lifestyles that they lead. It isnt good .

@@jamesstrohl2016 My friend, God has always been Spirit and explained how to worship him. Jn 7 16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. I can go back to Jer or Eze to show why the Spirit was given, and that it was given so they would keep his laws, because of faith, like Abraham did. He put his laws in man's heart and mind. We have to be in the Spirit, if we don't want to be under the law. We know that if someone sins, they are under the law, we can't be part-time believers, we can't serve two masters, one who believes and sins is lukewarm and he will spue them out of his mouth. 1 Jn 2 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. We were supposed to worship him in spirit just like many of the prophets and others did. There's nothing new under the sun. That's my understanding and I won't say you are wrong because that what you believe, and this is what I believe. To say my way is right and yours is wrong, would be presumptuous, and that's not of God, and shows pride. Shalom

@@jamesstrohl2016 We are supposed to reason amongst ourselves just like Jesus and his disciples, with reasoning, not I'm right and your wrong. Otherwise believers will become more divided than everyone is now. Jesus said that a house that is divided shall not stand, and that's Satan's plan, and is working mightily, because men won't reason with each other because of pride. My friend, I am a student and will be until the day I die, always seeking the truth. Shalom
