Gotta say, I absolutely love your podcast. Having a podcast that I can listen to with such in-depth discussion of scripture is great you guys are doing good. That being said, while I do agree that using instrumental accompanied music as a means to glorify oneself or the institution of the church is sinful absolutely; I do feel the potential abuse does not make Worship with instruments inherently sinful, it simply is can be abused, as a choir could be. Psalm 33:2 Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. My appeal is that because it is not explicitly prohibited in the new testament, and being something that was prevalent in the Old Testament. Wouldn't it make sense for Paul or Peter to address this issue? Especially to converted Jews who would have been accustomed to worship in a particular way? But they don't, they leave it to the discretion of the church/believer with the aid of the Holy Spirit.

Operative word is "praise" in the OT. Contrast that with how they worshiped. Jewish temple worship and praise were different. It bears deeper study, but the Greek/Hebrew defines worship. Praise and worship sound the same, but if i told you I am eating a peanut butter sandwich, you would assume in most cases its white bread and jiffy. What if the original recipe called for wheat bread and Skippy? Still a peanut butter sandwich, but different. There are good books on First century religious practices out there, I think they bear our that Jewish and Early Christian worship were acappella.

If worship is for teaching as it says in Colossians 3:16, what is instrumental worship teaching in contrast to a cappella worship? It seems that we should both consider if our church worship pleases God and what our worship is teaching people in the church. It appears that instrumental teaches that it is okey to do what people want instead of what doing what please God. In addition it teaches that we can add to God’s teaching in order to make it more relevant and pleasing for people.

It isn't our place to question God's motives when it comes to ANYTHING in his Word! One of the dangers of instrumental music is that it gives some of the glory which belongs to God alone and gives it to the person or persons playing the instruments.

Brothers, maybe a word study of "praise" and "worship" should be contrasted. You can go deeper and should. We of course don't do this study to corner people, but to lead them to the truth of the word. All three of you are doing well, help us understand the difference between the two words and how they were applied. Maybe quote some first century books that show how the church worshiped too? One other thing, would you rather reach judgment and have God say "It was okay to use them, but you feared me, you didn't go beyond the scripture and took it at face value in context and in that you have done well my good and faithful servant" or "I never authorized worship towards ME to include instruments. You took it upon yourself to disobey, willingly and did not study these matters as I commanded you...." what will happen? ........44:07 "Revelations".....bwahaha......Oh the trivial things we jump on each other for. Can you show me where the word, WORSHIP, in context shows us in the OT that instruments were included in worship? Praise with instruments, sure, but WORSHIP is a different time and setting. Praise and worship are two different words.

So a question....about the family you soeak of and the church they attend..I too loved their show, but they have since produced movies that give a dispensational doctrine..... Should we call them out? How do we handle that situation if I go into the church they attend and they break out the guitars??? Should we ignore their change? Have you not read what the scriptures say? 1 Cor 10:4 “and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was the Christ.” It was Christ that followed the Israelites out in the wilderness for 40 years. Ps 149:3 “Let them praise his name in the dance: Let them sing praises unto him with timbrel and harp. 4 For Jehovah taketh pleasure in his people:” (when they are using instruments!) Ps 150 3-6 “Praise him with trumpet sound: Praise him with psaltery and harp. 4 Praise him with timbrel and dance: Praise him with stringed instruments and pipe. 5 Praise him with loud cymbals: Praise him with high sounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that hath breath praise Jehovah. Praise ye Jehovah.” God enjoys musical instrumentation usage in worship to Him. And “Him” is Christ!! He doesn't need to tell you AGAIN to use them, because you should know that it pleases Him because He has already told you! CHRIST was there with those Israelites! “Have you not read what the scriptures say?”

Logic: “if it isn’t specifically mentioned and allowed than it is bad for church” “NT doesn’t mention instrumental music?, therefore bad” NT also doesn’t allow a church to have microphones, speakers, plumbing, electricity, coffee, lightbulbs, ect… Plucking instrumental music out of the dozens of things that go unmentioned seems very biased. I could make your SAME argument about preachers using microphones and you wouldn’t be able to biblically fight it? You can’t say “hyper-specific worship is an OT theme therefore valid for the NT” and at the same time say “Instrumental music was ok in the OT, but not in the NT” You can’t just pick and chose whenever you want to use the OT. Psalms isn’t Leviticus. You guys need to show NT bible verses that outlaw instrumental music, and you can’t.

@@bruce-bruce7975 what NT evidence can you provide for a preacher using a microphone? Is a church specifically allowed to be built with concrete, plumbing, electricity, and lighting? The NT just doesn’t have the level of specificity that they imply. It’s a template. It just says sing. You say singing with a piano (invented a millennia and half later) is bad. If God cared about that level of specificity He would have added it. This is a specific idea of added detail to a document where none exists. If a worker instruction book simply says “eat lunch at 12” you can’t come along and say THE BOSS SAYS “eat salad, from 12-12:15, and in the back office” The NT takes out the law of Moses specifically, it doesn’t say Psalms is inapplicable. Final point in this there is instruments in Heaven. Psalms and Revelations are filled with them. Inanimate Objects, tools, are amoral, which might just be why the Bible spends so little caring about them.

@@JesseJacobson7 [2:23] Christian church worship is spelled out succinctly in the New Testament: (1) congregational singing (1 Corinthians 14:15; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16), prayer (Acts 12:12; 2 Thessalonians 3:1; James 5:16), giving (1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 8/9), Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-29; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:20ff.), and Scripture reading, preaching, and teaching (Acts 20:7; 1 Timothy 4:13). Actions that go beyond scriptural avenues through which to approach God in “true” (John 4:24) worship are “sourced in the will of the worshiper, not the will of the one worshiped.” They may appear to be reflections of the worshiper’s sincere humility-but such is “false humility” and they provide no assistance in subduing the flesh and living the Christian life. As Jesus declared: “in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9). Colossians 3 [3:16] This verse articulates the divine will with regard to corporate church worship. The church worship assembly is envisioned, as evidenced by (1) the use of three plural participles (“teaching,” “admonishing,” “singing”) which imply the whole church, (2) the reflexive pronoun used reciprocally (“one to another”), requiring a plurality of people gathered together, (3) the use of en humin (“in you”) implying the entire church (4:16-“among you”), (4) Paul’s contrast between their assembly and his absence from that assembly (2:5); and (5) Paul’s call for the letters to be read in the church assembly (4:16). This verse enjoins congregational singing. [3:17] The principle of authority is taught throughout the Bible and is indispensable to arriving at the truth regarding God’s will for life. Colossians 2:23 - 3:17

“The majority of American churches build worship around what they want” - this is such an overinflated statement and completely unfair. This is simply not true but as someone who grew up in the church of Christ It’s the message we were told. Have you ever been to a worship service with instruments? I do now. The lord is exalted and it’s in fact not “just a rock concert” like I was fed to believe my entire upbringing. The fact is the theme of the church of Christ is “we are right and here is why you are wrong” @gospelbroadcastingnetwork
