After 60021 on 6E36 came into difficulties at Denton the train came to a hault, Whilst being stationery the biomass in the second hopper caught fire which resulted in police and fire services on the scene, 60056 took 60021 and the 2 hoppers up to Guide Bridge Yard before a 1Z99 66709 came from Peak Forest to take 6E36 to Drax 12 hours after 60021 failed, The video shows 66709 struggling to depart Denton which from info I’ve received was due to the brakes not releasing properly, A very eventful day for 6E36.

I can tell, that driver forgot to deactivate the direct brake and is over stressing the engine to shit, or he didn’t charge his airbrake up OR he didn’t turn of his parking brake

Certainly made it! A bit like me as I finished work and walked over to here just as 66709 was firing into life so very good timing lol! Yesterday was a bit crazy with 6E36 as it blocked the line for 12 hours, Am not sure where 60021 went too but the 2 wagons which were in the fire are on Guide Bridge Yard which makes sense, It’s interesting watching scenario’s like this 🙂👍🏻.

Brakes wouldn't release properly so even a 60 would have the same issue(as I've experienced many times). Hence at 6:55 the brakes eventually did release fully.

Excellent video. Yes, 60056 was definitely in the area. I got a video of it (light loco) going through Ashton station about 8am while I was waiting for the Victoria train. It was stationary at Ashton Moss North Junction on the line closest to the cricket pitch (just before the signal) when I went past shortly afterwards.

A 66 needs a good belt to get things moving , but the fact that even on a rising gradient , which I'm sure it is , even tho' I don't recognise exactly where it is due to the trees and not having worked over there for over 6 years ,you can see the train is clearly whipping the engine back for the length of the coupling pull-out and the engine stops when buffered back up . Get them brakes off . Too many folks try and bully the train before it's ready , and that 'boils me piss' !

Sort of thing that leads to crippling a wagon with flats. You could see the train was nailed down, not just rolling back on a gradient. Perhaps an un-seasoned crew??

I would guess that the train brake needed overcharging which boosts BP to over 5 bar. Then that resets the distributors in the wagons as the overcharge bleeds off therefore getting full brake release. Got called out to this type on incident many times. On one heavy train of stone stuck in the Severn tunnel we had to get the failed engine restarted to get the 2500 tonne of stone train moving up the bank. It held till we got to Patchway and then we were OK to Avonmouth all down hill

Class 66 proving they are not up to the job that a class 60 can handle and never have been. The 60s get awful temperamental if they don't get maximum maintenance treatment though.

Totally irrelevant. It seemed to take it away with ease once the brakes released properly. Class 66 was never intended to be a direct competitor to the Class 60 anyway. You're comparing apples to oranges! 66 is certainly alot more reliable!!

Thanks! 😁 Yes very much was struggling! Nice to have 66709 doing this which was my first ever GBRf Celeb loco and also one I have a model of so quite meaningful too! 6E36 had a bit of a shocker yesterday with 60021 failing and then the biomass fire which started inside the hopper so rather chaotic! Believe those 2 wagons are now on Guide Bridge Yard itself which makes sense, I saw 66731 at Denton on the Hope Street this afternoon so am guessing you saw it come past at the bottom of your garden 😄. 👍🏻

Thank you for excellent video and for your patience, wondering whether this was going to start or not, glad you good weather too. It would interesting to know how many trains fails/loose time to due brake issues on freight trains. What are the regulatory requirements are for planned maintenance on freight wagon brakes? It is interesting to note the Cumbrian train derailment must have been caused by a brake failure or bearing seizure, as it was derailed due to flats on the wheel tyre caused by either brake failure or wheel bearing seizing to the wheel. I don't why just like some diesels, there is not mandatory requirement for four white lines painted on wagon wheels so yard staff can identify locked wheels?
@DOCTORDROTT

That's why we do roll by checks , good idea marking axles with bright paint. Its hard do do roll by's at night in a dark yard. I always had a good lamp. Some groundstaff or drivers missed a hand brake left on. Most wagons have indicators. I would introduce a valve on the hand brake. If its on, you can't create brake pipe, so you can't move. I had a big incident in South Wales I got called to. Last wagon handbrake left on a 76 ton steel coil wagon. It got dragged 10 miles ! It was common on HTA coal wagons The white lines on Locos were for tyre movement. All locos now are monoblock wheelsets , no tyres

over charge the brake pipe, put it in slow speed and give it power, full power.
@haroldhorseposture9435
@haroldhorseposture9435 9 ай бұрын
IN slow speed, you don't give it power, the electronix does that for you. Most certainly would have needed overcharge, which it should have had as part of coupling and prepping to go, as per braking instructions , My guess is due to failing, handbrakes may have been applied. Some folks I know seemed to have great difficulty in releasing all the ones they'd applied ! No need for slow speed unless driver is cack-handed .

you still need to open the controller to give power, and you can move it towards full power, ask some of the other on here how I know.@@haroldhorseposture9435

@DB_Bazza79 8 ай бұрын
In order to overcharge the train brakes you have to have the train brake pipe at 5 bar meaning all brakes released and on a uphill gradient this wouldn't work, then having to wait 3 mins for the overcharge to bleed off also. Best thing to do brake pipe at 4.5, power in notch 4 or 5, wait for loco to pull, fully release brake, wait for air flow to come off, notch up to 7, relaes direct and you'll slowly set off. The way we do it out of long Sidings uphill at Peak with a fully loaded train.
@davidlyon2690
@davidlyon2690 8 ай бұрын
you over charge the brake pipe to tune the brakes to your locomotive, the train could have been in an overcharged state when left, when the brakes are put to release and overcharge is pressed you go, otherwise the weight of the train will pull you backwards down the slope, by saying that you stand there until the overcharge has leaked down proves you dont know what you are talking about. @@DB_Bazza79
@nounoufriend1442
@nounoufriend1442 8 ай бұрын
@@DB_Bazza79 Couldn't you just get train away while in overcharge then let it bleed off while moving , don't see the need to sit there while it bleeds off , wouldn't it be best to get some power on to take hold of train before brakes fully release " straight air brake won't hold it "
