As someone with GBS, it is a big deal!
@tay6418

GBS should be taken SERIOUSLY. And with all due respect, I honestly feel like you shouldn’t be acting so nonchalant when discussing this matter. Because if people see that you, as (I’m assuming) a healthcare professional not make a big deal about it, they too will probably not take this matter seriously. Babies can and have died from this infection! Women and people in general should be more educated about GBS. So please don’t treat this matter like it’s “just gbs” like “it’s not a big deal.” It may be “just gbs” for us adults, but when it comes to the babes, it’s very deadly and should be taken seriously. And I say all of this out of concern for other people’s education about the true threat GBS poses towards babies!💕😊 Please do your research, everyone. Look for the signs of GBS in while pregnant, because it’s possible to have negative results when testing for GBS and develop GBS in the last few weeks of pregnancy. Therefore exposing your baby to the infection you thought you didn’t have. And please, everyone, do your research of the signs of GBS in your babies. They can have early onset GBS or late onset GBS. So you may not even see the signs until your baby is about 3 months old!!!!!! Again do your research everyone, GBS truly is a heartbreaking infection that can take the life of your baby if they have been exposed to the bacteria. I don’t say all of this to scare you, but out of love. 💕 😊

Babies have died, yes. But the way we treat GBS here is not how all developed countries do. It’s not actually a cut and dry issue, there are lots of nuances. Most babies won’t die from it.
@tay6418
@tay6418 Ай бұрын
@@racheln4309 it should still be discussed seriously though. So people aren’t not taking it seriously because if they don’t think it’s a serious thing they may not really feel the need to have their baby treated.
@racheln4309

@@tay6418 I agree! people need to be informed. But I also wonder if the statistics that we have are as high as they are because most women have lots of cervical checks before and during labor, as well as many women getting their waters broken. Those things seem like they would definitely help introduce bacteria up high where the baby is.
@tay6418
@tay6418 Ай бұрын
@@racheln4309 that’s definitely something to think about!

No one ever mentions what it does to your babies gut bacteria though. They use things has "preventitives" that end up causing harm to child or mother later in life. Instead of just treating the problem if it arises they treat everyone for nothing.

Could you give us a little on lichen sclerosus and pregnancy/vaginal delivery? Curious if there's anything to consider or be aware of as far as spread, or impact to vulvar/perineum healing after delivery (thinking perhaps changes in hormones?!). I was diagnosed in my late 20s (about 5-6 years ago) because of course (I am an internally broken millennial apparently collecting reproductive and auto-immune disorders 😅🙃). No pregnancies (yet? 😬) but I keep meaning to dig up more info on LS + pregnancy. I like your to-the-point no-bullshit way of explaining things so here I am. 😉😂❤

Only bummer was I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because of insufficient antibiotics prior to baby being born. As a FTM I went into labor at 37w 5d and was 6 cm by the time I got to the hospital and they didn’t give me enough penicillin in time!
@britneywendel3305

Yes, this! *And* getting the antibiotics in for a certain amount of time before baby is born is pretty important still, right? I know a family that had a baby that sadly passed away in the 90s because it was born before the 4 hours of antibiotics. And they were trying to keep my sister’s recent induction slow at the start because of the GBS and letting the penicillin work long enough, I believe.

I was gbs positive, didn’t know when I gave birth. Got the test done at 37 weeks, surprisingly, delivered my baby 2 days later before my results were in. So I didn’t get the antibiotics. They watched my little guy like a hawk during our hospital stay! Thank God he’s fine though

Is it completely necessary to have IV antibiotics in labor if you are GBS positive? I absolutely hate antibiotics and feel like it might be an unnecessary intervention if you don’t have any of the other risk factors.
@CS-er9xv

It's actually not for you, it's for your baby. Group B strep (or strep agalactiae) can cause meningitis in newborns. They come in contact with it when they pass thru the birth canal. If you're positive for gbs but having a C-section then you shouldn't need it. However, if you're gbs positive and delivering vaginally, then I'd definitely get the IV antibiotics

I definitely wish I was told that I was instead of waiting until I went into labor and then on top of that getting penicillin when that shit was burning me through the iv smfh. I had no idea I was gbs positive until right after I had given birth (first pregnancy) when one of the nurses was telling a postpartum nurse the breakdown.

I had GBS with my first pregnancy and to be honest it was a big deal because I wasn't told my only option of my waters broke was the be induced with the drip, and I wasn't allowed to use the bath or shower on the day. It was not a good experience. Second pregnancy I was neg, and waters broke again so I was able to get in the bath this time and had an amazing full physiological birth. If I'd have been positive I'd have been induced again and likely would have had numerous unnecessary interventions. FYI some countries screen all women for GBS and many others just do risk factors only. The risk of passing GBS to your baby is pretty low. I recommend listening to the Great Birth Rebellion podcast on this topic.

Can you answer what percentage of labors with GBS positive mothers where antibiotics improves outcome? I've heard as much as 60% of babies may still be affected due to antibiotics not being enough. So many women receive false negatives and their babies are either incredibly sick or worst case, pass away. Acting nonchalant about it may soothe some mothers who have no negative experience but could traumatize others by telling them it's "no big deal" they have group b, or lost their infant due to group b...I'd consider rewording this, or at least adding a disclaimer.
