I've repaired a few Garrett pinpointers for friends... the speaker wire usually. Somtimes though, just taking the batteries out and letting any power drain off, then holding down the on button while reinstalling the battery resets the speaker mode. Odd, I know...but either way, repairable.

I had a cheap detector from radio Shack, I hate to say that trying to get it to detect anything but junk just under the surface was what made me lose interest for metal detecting for most of my life. Now at 71 years old, I bought a Garrett 300, then a Nokta Simplex+ and I have been hunting hard for less than a year and enjoying the heck out of it. I suggest getting a simple, but good detector to start with is the right thing to do. I do not think that detector is the right one to start with, but I give you an A for effort and video.

People who are commenting he should talk more- the value is in hearing the detector and watching how he interprets the sounds. It's better to not talk over it. People are forgetting how to observe and learn, they want want everything packaged for them in sound bites. If you want a Tik Tok video of guy pulling a car out of the ground and yelling over it then go there.
@MetalDetecting244 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the kind words. I could never understand, why people want me to change the format, when all they have to do is just "switch the channel" to someone who talks, screams, or even replaces the "annoying" sound of the detector with music. I'm in the minority, while they can chose from 99,9% of the KZbin content that would suit them better. Just imagine a channel about racing cars with onboard footage and viewers who demand to just show the (standing) car and talk about it, after it passed the chequered flag. Strange... Have a great day.

Hi, do you still use this detector?, have you tried it with the bigger coil also?.
@MetalDetecting249 жыл бұрын
+Armor of Light Hi, at the moment (at river shores with many pieces of "industrial trash"), I'm using the XP Deus because of its variety of tones. When I'm in the woods, I use the Deus too, because of the larger coil and bigger comfort in very steep terrain. I haven't tried the GC-1023 with a larger coil yet. I would like to do a comparison between the Deus and the GC-1023 (maybe it will happen sometime in the future - I have to find the right place first, with much iron and some finds).
@migfoxbat9 жыл бұрын
MetalDetecting24 Thanks for your reply. Do you still think the GC-1023 is a good detector? and a good detector for a first timer?. :-)
@MetalDetecting249 жыл бұрын
+Armor of Light It's a difficult question. It depends on the person and the location. This detector has almost everything a detectorist needs (Disc, 2-Tone and All-Metal mode). It is relatively light and stable. I have some issues in 2-Tone mode, but this might be only my unit. Would I hunt in Disc-Mode, I would have no problems at all. Of course it shines in very difficult conditions, where some experience is needed, but after a while every beginner can gain experience and use this machine for his advantage. I believe that the most important thing is a stable machine, that is not "falsing" and showing a good signal, where nothing is there. It is (or at least it was not) the case, when I tried it (let the 2-Tone mode with the false "iron" signal aside). The lack of target ID numbers is (in my opinion) a huge advantage for a beginner (and every experienced hunter). My only concern is the depth and not the greatest audio spectrum (for different sizes and shapes of targets). But people are recommending Garrett Ace 250 which sounds like a pinball machine. Would I recommend it for a forest, where signals are very rare? Probably not, because of the (small) size of the coil. I would use it to learn metal detecting and keep it later as a "secret weapon" for separating iron from other targets. But that's me, maybe someone else can extract more and use it successful in other scenarios. Have a great day.

+MetalDetecting24 Thanks for your reply and i appreciate the info you have shared. What positions should i put the sensitivity and discrimination dials at?. I received my GC-1023 today and i only had an hour before dark, but i was eager to try it, and it was the first time i have used a metal detector. I found a nugget of iron, a large rusty nail, 3 tops off jars from small to large in size, a very small piece of soda can and the brass from a shotgun cartridge. Would you be willing to make a video to show how to set up the sensitivity and discrimination please?, there are hardly any videos on this model, you and 'Goldfinger' really!. All the best :-)
@MetalDetecting249 жыл бұрын
+Armor of Light Hello, nice to hear, you just started metal detecting. Be aware - it can be an addictive hobby. The objects you have found are "normal" even if it's trash. You could maybe avoid the iron objects (with a higher discrimination level, or more experience in the future), but the rest is just part of metal detecting. It can be a long and hard process. The key is not to lose motivation at the beginning. The location is also very important. Luck plays a huge part too. I'm sorry, I can't make a video right now, but I can try to describe, how to do it. Please take the iron objects you have found and wave them in front of the coil (at various angles). Try to increase the DISC knob until the signal disappears (in DISC mode), or it changes the tone (in 2-Tone mode). Than you are ready to go. You can adjust it later in the field to, should you dig too many nails (for example). Keep in mind - the detector can still be fooled by various iron objects (it all depends on the size, shape, depth and ground). Now the "sensitivity" part: Turn this knob all the way up (to the max). If the detector starts to chatter, go back a little bit until it gets completely quiet. If you move the coil in the air and it starts to make noises, do the same until it stops. A stable detector is very important at the beginning, even if you should lose a little bit of depth. You can take a look at my discrimination "setting": fs1.directupload.net/images/150917/6dx4nz78.jpg Have a nice evening. I wish you good finds!

I have 2 garrett Pointers. 1 from them and 1 from Kellyco. They both went to shit quick. I am aware of knockoffs and I don't have one. I treat mine with respect and care and don't bang them around or dig with them .. Am I just unlucky or is this a common issue? I'm overseas now and sending for repair or whatnot is very inconvenient.
@MetalDetecting248 жыл бұрын
+John Griffiths - Hello, I don't know how many people have problems with Garrett's pin pointer. I read a few complains in the past here and there. The main issue would be "falsing". At the beginning the pointer works great, but after a while... I have another video on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZ-UYaNpfaqKoq8 Maybe it will help if you have the same issue. Cheers.

@MetalDetecting244 жыл бұрын
Hi, there is not much to set. When I used it the first time, I turned the discrimination knob down and tried to find something. When I dug out a rusty nail, I just discriminated it out and continued using this setting. Everything depends on the location. Just try to discriminate out as little as possible.

I enjoy your videos my wife says I am adicted. I have a very cheap detector but am too shy to ask for permissions; The places that you search have to have permission ?
@MetalDetecting248 жыл бұрын
Hello, I think, we share the same problem. I'm very shy too. I would like to hunt on a field from time to time, but when I see a nice looking one, I just pass it. Knocking on peoples doors is not an option for me. Waiting until the owner shows up, is not an option either. But even if someone is working on the field, it takes ages until I decide to go to the person and ask. My last hunt on a field was last year. I circled around, asked a few locals if they know the owner... It wasn't worth it. I tried to sent an email lately, but got no response. This is why I hunt in the woods, without any problems (so far). The other reason is - my experience on fields was not as good as in the woods - it was a little bit boring. No real challenge.

@MetalDetecting248 жыл бұрын
+miguel rompelberg - Hello, thank you. It is not the deepest machine on small targets, but it surprised me with the depth on some bigger objects. I don't have any numbers. I also didn't made any tests or comparisons with other detectors until now. But my feeling tells me - it is not "very" deep (but many of my other machines are (in my opinion) shallow too, so maybe it is not that bad).

Hi there! One mor excelent video with the GC 1023. I have one GC 1023, but i have difficult to find the good customize. I mostly search for antique coins. You use the "Sens" in wich level? And the "Disc"? I use "Sens" about 8 and "Disc" about 4. What do you think? Thank you! For you help and for your videos :-)
@MetalDetecting249 жыл бұрын
+76pestinha Thank you! My "Sens" setup depends on the situation. I try to set it as high as possible (it has big impact on depth). As soon as the GC-1023 starts making noises, I decrease the value a little bit. The "Disc" knob must be at about the same position as your setup. I made a picture for you: fs1.directupload.net/images/150917/6dx4nz78.jpg I hope you will find the right setting. Have a great day & Happy Hunting!
