By raising the concrete against the bldg you also get a smoother transition with those door sills. 🤩 The down hill curb turned out real nice too. Love that you do “in the rain” after footage.

Don’t get it, unless it’s immediate, save the cash for a period of time till ya get the 6,000 (in this case) and spend it to get it done right. But I’ve noticed though job experience that the people who are higher up the ladder want the smaller less expensive fixes then spending one time to get it right. I’ve also learned though doing so and working manual labor that giving water, soda, sports drinks or lunch to people. They’ll do a little extra or just be happier working in your project or if there’s an issue there willing to fix it.

big job but thats what it needs. how did they build that building next to a hill with no swale in between?? maybe it filled in over time. lots of maintenence needed oof oak trees. schedule 40 8 inch wow! interesting job. glad you're there to fix things. i had two plumbers tell me my iron sewer pipes were all tore up and causing backups. had two plumbers run cameras neither could find any tore up pipes. asked one plumber if he thought it was the vent. he said no, because the toilet was flushing. if there was a vent problem then it wouldnt flush. i put the hose on the vent and cleared the vent. now it works again. GO FIGURE. plumber x told me i had to dig up my cement floor to replace my sewer pipe. yeah. $20,000 to do that under my kitchen too? no way! always get a second opinion! or third. or learn it from youtube haha. WATER FLOWS DOWNHILL shirt when??

Great story Apples! And yes, common sense says to check the vent, even if the toilet is flushing. Start with the easy, obvious stuff. If you had spent 20k your drains still wouldn't have worked!

Good idea caulking the gaps . Tree roots grow into those gaps and block the pipes plus dirt ingress as the roots grow larger. The whole problem stems back to the Building is sited too low up against a hill in the first place . Not sure why Council regs over there allow this to happen all the time . The Blame Goes back to blue prints and drainage Engineering plans at approval stage

Filter fabric works great. You just have to find the brands that work well. Dude, even the DOT uses it. But ya, I certainly agree that most companies do not do good drainage work.

I agree with your assessment. It is always far better to prevent the water from getting anywhere near the building. It is good to have both active (drains) and passive (sloping) systems in case the drains get clogged. I would add mesh to the sidewalk. Helps prevent unwanted cracking. But would require a pumper.

Love the project! Agree: very important to add that catch basin. That location needed one due to its low point position. I sure like those catch basins. So pitiful that all that expense went into the first project establishing those catch basins with no fall away from the FFE. Smart to never put drains against the foundation. Great project.

Quite sad to see so much work getting removed with a jackhammer. If the company would have done a messy job, it might be easier, but it seems like they did a proper job - just in the wrong spot. Still, if the drains get overflowed, could't this be solved with a "faster water removal" instead? Like adding a sump basin and a pump to that drain system?

Adding pumps could help to temporarily solve the problem. If the pumps failed, the power went out, or they were overwhelmed the building would flood again. I needed a solution that worked better with more and more water, worked with no power, and had a buffering capacity away from the foundation. This was it for me. Great points to consider doc!

Nice job as usual. I would be a little nervous about that hillside and water flowing under the new concrete. They need a retaining wall and some leaf maintenance. Otherwise it will back up with leaves pretty soon.

Water flowing under the new concrete is a concern. We make sure to compact the soil very well with our finish grading for that reason. The concrete is also functioning as a basin to hold water in case the catch basins get covered in leaves, similar to how a wetland works. I hope they keep up with clearing the debris.

I had a pet Millipede as a kid (About the size of a Cigar) - they make surprisingly good pets, and are great for the soil if you're gardening! They do love sweet fruits and veggies - anything they can find rotting on the ground. Melon rinds were my Millipede's favorite dish.

? Is the concrete reinforced? With fiberglass? If not my experience is that with that thickness of concrete you should be reinforced otherwise with reinforcement mesh or rebar. If not, it will most likely crack. Laying concrete directly against a wooden structure like this against the stairs, even though it is impregnated, will rot. Sooner or later. Feel free to explain how you thought. Maybe I should learn something new. For my goal is to learn a new thing every day.

Rebar isn't needed and rarely used here for nonstructural concrete. The reason is we have no frost line, impermeable clay subsoils with no subsurface water, and no bentonite.

Question…Channel drain not a good idea next to foundation, slope of the concrete away from house should take care of the water…however, can you have both? Ie both channel drain (next to foundation in this video) + slope of concrete away from house?

You want the channel drain to be at the low point to collect the water and allow it to drain away. You never want to place a drain at a higher point otherwise the water that doesn't get in will pool in the low point. Great question👍

Sir you missed a point in doing it your way leaving out a HUGE bonus. IF the new drains you just cleaned out ever clogged, the new lower area makes a safety catch basin. How many gallons would be pooled in this basin before reaching the foundation. Will add a nice safety margin plus a advance notice if you see pooling in the basin, clean the pipes.

One of the best investments ive made was one of those sewer jetter hoses for a pressure washer. I used to have issues with drains backing downstairs in my house and after hiring a plumber a few times, enough was enough. What was truly shocking was the sheer volume of "debris" that builds up in the pipes over the years. Everyone always blames the toilets but what surprised me was how much buildup was caused by the laundry. All that fine fiberous stuff slowly accumulates into literal bricks of fiber that plug everything up.

If we had left the channel drains in place the flooding might still continue. The only 100% effective solution I know if is what we did, even though it was a very large project.

But is it water from hill go under that edge and under the concrete they created,,, Should you put also a drain pipe with holes next to this concrete edge and only then pour earth to cover the edge to collect water that came down from hill

No, we used a soil with a high clay content against the new concrete so water will flow over it and onto the concrete. There is no way the water can hold on that hill and percolate down.

You use rebar if it is required in your area. Where I lived in Colorado, you needed as much rebar as you could fit. Here, it's not needed for non structural concrete.

Yes we do occasionally use fiber. Wire is not needed in our area for non-structural concrete.

8" pipe either they did thier homework or oversized the pipe. but if there is a heavy rainfall with gravitty it looks like you have capacity. Moving the low spot back so the water does not try to test the membrane around the building, great idea. Smart concrete guys with the wall and the slope by the basins. Those stairs are water stairs to that basin? Is that a real thing? Nice Job. Concrete buggy ever think you need two? You save money not having a concrete pump and hose!

Water stairs are a thing. Slow the water down the hill so less likely to pond at the bottom. A second concrete buggy would require more workers to place the concrete. plus a second driver. The concrete company will charge if their vehicle is there too long so if there is a long haul it may be worth it.
