We bypass a clog in the leach field, reattach to the old field and add additional chambers. Their septic tank backed up and overflowed inside the house, which is a sign of a clogged leach field. We offered a repair that also increased the capacity of the field at the same time. This repair has worked very well and the homeowners have not had any problems.

✨👍. Great job. Question ❓❓. Is there a perferated or line running under the chamber length or is there just a line going in from the septic tank? How does water go down the whole length of the chamber ...I didn't see any lines under the chambers ...So the bottom of the chambers are just dirt ? No need for gravel? Was that good perking soil ? Looked like some clay ...Did the town require a perk test ? Looks great for a repair..kinda weird covering the septic tank...Not good to have weight on it...✨👍. Also... Couldn't you use a distribution box at the line junction? Just curious ✨.
@GCFD
@GCFD Жыл бұрын
The chambers leave the soil open along their length. Think about a piece of gravel sitting on soil. That area is no longer available to absorb water. That's why you can use 1 foot of chamber as 2 feet of traditional field. The soil was clay but it percs well enough. They did a perc test for the original building permit. We could use a d box, but typically only use those for 3+ laterals.
@stich1960

Around here you would jave to have a d box and only virgin ground for new leg. Seems like a d box to spread the flow evenly would be better

Hi Shawn. Recognizing that different municipalities have different building codes, I'm wondering if you considered placing a distribution sump (A.K.A., "D-box") at the location that you placed the double sanitary "T." D-boxes provide an auxiliary location for small solids to settle (and decompose), as well as provide a way to access/control the even flow of gray water into either leach location.

No such thing of a cogged leach field in NJ. If you're selling the buyer will requested a perk test & guess what they all fail. Now seller is caught under contract & buyer gets a new septic at $35000 -$45000. This could have been prevented if my neighbor(seller) had the septic system certified first & repairs made. I have seen this tactic done in my township several times.

My grandfather had to dig up his tank when I was a kid, and still had the measured drawing from when he put that tank in the ground 43 years earlier. I know where the caps are for mine - I set flat stones flush in the dirt directly on top of them, after digging to find them the first time - but I have zero documentation of the leach field, just "over there somewhere" from the previous owner.

Does your county require that they come out to inspect prior to covering? We had to replace our leach field (and clear a bunch of trees - doubled(!) the cost...) and the county required submitted plans and then a post installation inspection before covering (North Georgia) - and you are 100% correct about letting the soil compact naturally for a month or more! The chambers are the cat's meow too - efficient and a joy to install.

I know this is a year old video.. but as a level iv NC installer, this whole site is just off kilter. 😢 I'm sorry but for starters i would never trust a pumper on where a system is. I would pull any and all paperwork associated from the county health department of the original design (records go back to early 70s) if no records are found then probe, follow and flag the gravel. also ANY repair HAVE to be permitted and inspected. I did not hear once of permit or consulting with EHS... ohh the other thing, chamber installers have to be certified by infiltrator. And that smooth edge bucket is not what you use to dig those trenches. They tell you that in installer school, the trench bottom is where the permeation takes place and that bucket just sealed that soil. That repair done no justice. Im sorry but this is a illegal 🚫 repair. You were better off digging that corrugated up and hard pipe the problem area. J M 2 C

Using slotted corrugated flex pipe as the leech pipe for the septic system proves that whoever installed it did everything on the cheap. That makes the entire system suspect in my mind. Where I live the ground water is 120+ feet deep. When my parents had their house built in 1973 they had the leech field dug 10 feet deeper than the level of the leech pipe and filled with rock before the leech pipe was installed and covered. They also had 5 100 foot long trenches dug from the septic tank to the edge of the property. They have had zero problems with the leech field in 50 years.

The guy i had digging i put a 45 gallon plastic drum 10 feet in the ground full of holes wraped in fabric and i wanted him to back fill the drum with sand to foot over top an dig a trench across the hill side an day light out the side of the hill and put 3 feet deep sand in the whole trench to day light an id put fabric on top an back fill with the clay. As the water softner has to back flush the salt brine every 3000 gallons i didnt want that salt water going in my septic an kill it from fermenting. He refusd to do as i asked saying i done this hundred times water will go though clay. I knew it woudents. He told me if it didnt work he come back an fix it. Well it was many months later before it back flushed an it backed up into the root cellar. I called him up to come look. But he never did. I rented a excavator the next spring after brake up an had to rip up my graval road to the barn and my costly road fabric i put down on the clay to prevent the clay eating my 2 feet of gaval and do it the way i wanted it done in the first place an fixe my road over 2 years as clay sinks with freeze an thaaw know mater how much you try to compact it. When i did my septic i had to import the whole feild due to red clay. 4 feet bed of sand 250x250 wash crushed stone foot over pipes an 4 feet of aproved setic sand over top an a clay berm all around it. For 5 years i had this huge sand mound in my yard until i biult with walk out basment an used the clay from the dig to lift the whole front grade up over top the sand . That how it had to be done to pass.

You're describing a dry well installation. Those don't work here with our clay. They quickly get overwhelmed. Leach fields do work because the give the water time to percolate into the ground. You have to size the field to the soil type and the number of bedrooms being serviced. In this case the plumber suggested hooking onto the side of the field that was still working, but I didn't like the idea of a smaller field. That's why we installed a new leg of chambers AND tied back to the good field. In NC we get two feet of credit for ever one foot of chamber systems. Now they have wya more field than needed for their size house. In other words, they're good to go. 👍

@@GCFD yes in the first part I am talking about a dry well known here in Canada as a gray water pit. But like I said its only for the salt water brine back wash of my water softner that only puts out 8 gallons of back wash brine every 3000 gallons of water used. You can fit a number of 8 gallon back wash into that 45 gallon drum full of 1" holes before its full. It could not drain that 8 gallons though the red clay before the next 3000 house gallons used an gone though the softner as my water not hard or have iron in it only A little high in calcium. Was not long before it backed up an flooded my root cellar. The 2nd part i explained was when I did my septic feild the ministry of heath looked at the test holes an told me its all clay. You have to import your whole septic feild in using a proved septic sand. I couldn't use the sand from my vain of sand in the huge gray hill I had out by the road even tho that sand vain is like white beach sand unless I paid 10k to have it approved. So I had to have a 4 foot deep bed of sand trucked in that went out 50' out side the edges of the drain feild including the whole drain feild area. Then 4 rows of them tunnels set in. Back filled to 6" over top the tunnels with 1/2" washed crushed stone. Then covered with road fabric and another 3' of approved septic sand on top. As well Out 50' all around the outer area of the feild. Then a 3' minimum clay bank all around the edges of the high sand mound. Water do not Circulate into clay at all thats why ponds dams are built using clean red clay. And the bottoms lined with few feet of clay. They also line road ditches here with red clay were its lose sand or graval. I dont get how they allow you to put a system into clay. Unless no $4000cnd permit and a 3 stage inspection. Water do not go though clay.

this problem will always be there. bad ground, a lot of clay. It would have been better to fill in 2-3 meters of crushed stone before putting chambers. this will serve as a filtration pad. and send water into the underground water.

I'm from Greensboro, and have done all sorts or research and what not on drain fields, along with doing my own. I've never in my life see one use corrugated pipe. Seems like a horrible idea, I'd have ripped up all that and did it all over. That's probably why it failed in the first place. Failed right when it got from under the pad.

The fitting is a 2way clean out fitting not a 2way tee or double tee or whatever you called it. A lid for the tank should be high on the list also. A kid or pet falling in would be bad for business.

Thanks Shawn, another very interesting installation. Just wondering what your thoughts are on pipe re-lining (like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnike4aBfdaCgdU). I know usually corrugated pipe failure will be from crush and lining is probably not possible but thinking that that corrugated from the sanitary T to the tank, under the concrete is perhaps one of the best candidates you've ever shown for doing this re-lining since it's probably not crushed "yet" but if it does fail then it's likely to be an incredible headache to repair. What's your thoughts and have you ever or would you consider doing this lining in places such as under concrete that are not likely to be crushed?

Ok so I am confused as to how the new chamber system actually works. The chamber don't have a bottom correct? No gravel covering it? So the water goes into the chamber that sits on the ground and soaks into the ground that way? It also looks like there are open ports on top of the chambers as well? Help me understand this. I'm old school.
@GCFD
@GCFD 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Rick, the chambers expose the bare soil. The idea is a piece of gravel on the soil makes that much surface area unavailable for percolation. The inside parts of the chamber are actually wells that support the center, and allow chambers to nest together. www.infiltratorwater.com/products/chambers/quick4-plus-series/quick4-plus-standard/

Hi Shaun, how does the septic system work? Does the leech field just get rid of liquids? I think they are called washaways in UK.
@GCFD
@GCFD 2 жыл бұрын
The tank provides time for the water to stagnate. The solids sink to the bottom and the grease floats to the top. The clear middle layer is what flows into the leach field and percolates back into the ground. 👍
