I recall decades ago on a Heavy Vehicle driving test ( to obtain a MILITARY Heavy Vehicle drivers License ) I hit a somewhat large pot-hole The Instructor said: You did well to avoid the small potholes but you managed hit a big one. To which I replied : It wasn't there yesterday -- it must have been a new one I did not know about. Anyway - a MILITARY driving test is far more intensive and critical than a civilian driving test.

It's no secret that motorcycles are awesome. They practically have the lowest emissions, fun, good for commuting, therapy, cheap to run and maintain, great for the environment and ease of traffic, among other benefits. However, the greedy British government and policy makers has double standards. On one hand they say they care about the environment, ulez scams, congestion scams, encouraging cyclists, making special provisions for them, and on the other hand, discouraging and over taxing low to zero emissions motorcycles. For example. I own a 2016 hyundai i10 with a yearly tax of £20 for approximately a 998cc car, with around 109 carbon emissions. But, for 125cc motorcycles the yearly tax is the same £20 with virtually zero emissions. Please note the fact that this is a low cc motorcycle too. And as the cc increases in motorcycles like 300, 600, 1000, the yearly tax increases on them too. So the fact is that, cars are taxed on emissions and motorcycles differently on horsepower, just to justify taxation on them. How is this not greed and discrimination against motorcycles? No one in power really cares about the environment. Its all a big fat cash cow. Have a nice day and ride safe.

They are nothing to do with safety. When a group of local residents asked for a speed check or van to be put on a road that had people doing 45+ in a 30 past an OAP home and school, they were told by the head of the Speed Camera Partnership in the North West that the vans are expensive to deploy. A full survey is required first to capture data of which times most people speed between, to make it cost effective. So if most were thought to be speeding between 8-9am and 9-10pm, they would put the van out only if they could get back enough in fines to make a profit. Now we have 20mph limits, which have no Traffic Orders and are not enforced in most areas legally, the risk to road users has increased. Most accidents on 30mph roads are at or below 20mph and have been for years. The reason for 20 limits was to cause congestion by restricting the flow of traffic in order to suggest there was suddenly more cars on the road or congestion - leading to further taxes.

Yep it’s not bad enough we pay for the cameras, the people watching the cams, the roads to be closed when they are put up and to keep them safe to travel on. After the tax payers pay all of that then they pay fines from everything we have already paid for. By a police force we also pay for… we also pay for the sports cars they drive to catch’s us and there road tax and insurance and maintenance. The working tax payers pays for the whole f’up system.

I've ridden motorbikes for 50 years now, and have been pulled for moving traffic violations 12 times. Always a polite chat explaining why I was stopped and then sent on my way. But those days are long gone. I still ride spiritedly but honestly I very rarely see any traffic police any more. It seems to be all cameras, at least in my area.

I make the argument that 20 is more dangerous than 30. Reason being, people chance pulling out on you and peds chance crossing because of the slower speed. Where I live there have been more accidents because of the changes, less fatalities yes, but more accidents overall.

Most accidents (excluding speeding police vehicles hitting cars and people) according to the police reports I have read over the last 20 years, have clearly stated that they were at under 20mph on 30mph roads and a lot involving children were within 30ft of crossings, some were in car parks and others caused by bikes being ridden across red lights with the usual no lights used on bikes at night. A few were drunk/drugged people wandering over roads and two falling under buses. Two were from "street furniture" being hit and falling on to pedestrians, killing them, and a bizarre one was a man that stopped to help when two cars run in to each other was hit by a car as he run across the road. A lot of low speed bumps are due to the distraction caused by roadside TV screens playing videos of adverts to drivers - who else are they aimed at and why are they even allowed. These are actually approved by ROSPA and City Councils which I find odd, it must pay well.

My argument with the 20mph limit is why is the pedestrian in the road without looking or using a crossing in the first place. Seems like you can’t fix stupid so you penalise the driver instead. Secondly 20mph does not help the environment, you’re driving for longer and looking at your cars mpg at 20mph with tell you everything you need to know about whether it’s working. Side note, disabling your stop start is not illegal and has nothing to do with safety.

Its not penalising the driver, its forbidding the driver from creating a danger. 20mph or 30 km/h is the highest speed at which pedestrian safety is still very good any less and the return is negligible whereas 30mph is significantly more dangerous. I recommend watching the Not Just Bikes video.

exactly, there are a lot of instances where pedestrians are crossing without looking whilst it is infeasible for me to give way, such as turning off of a free-flowing high speed road or pedestrians acting nonchalant at a zebra crossing, leaving you confused as to whether they intend to use it, and then they step out unexpectedly. 20mph and a lower speed in general isn't going to solve the root problem, which is poor driver/pedestrian behaviour etc

I do not see many police cars "cruising" around the roads in South London or the M25/M23. They are only seen when the blues and twos are on. I think this is the reason for the drop in driving standards. Good explanatory video, some useful tips.

And I have brought up all my children to always be respectful if they ever get pulled over because the officer will probably treat them the same way

If all officers were as pleasant as Owen, it would be great. And more importantly, this needs to be taught in all driving education. Driving tests are far too easy. No bad weather driving, no skid training just in case of black ice or snow. Judge said to me “ignorance of the rules is no excuse” the fact is, the driving test doesn’t give you all the rules.

I’ve had many friends pulled at an excess of 130, even caught drifting on the spot. They were extremely respectful with the interaction and let off with warnings, the worst was a section 59. This is not to encourage dangerous driving or to say you can get away with it. But it shows how important your attitude and behaviour is.

puting a downpipe in the same realm with cut springs or bad tire is just not justifiable. Downpipe is emissions & enviroment while the others are clear endangerments. Pulling over on a motorway is not advisable but if u had a rough experience with the police in that country you would do that just to endanger them and mess with them. Did that on a rainy day in romania and that officer was so angry that he wanted to throw the book at me and while oppening a door I have scarred an oncoming traffic and in front of me was a pile-up. The law is in my favour since there was no contact and no accident. The police man had a pretty tuff job afterwards with the pile up, no one was injured, just 12 cars being damaged and the police man asked me why I threw care to the wind, and I explained after he closed the camera that I simply want not to be misunderstood by the police and for them to engage in a chase and that the moment that they asked me to show the fire extinguisher I did as told.

The Betari Box is not a one way street. Several years ago I was given 'attitude' from the off by a particularly obnoxious police officer. He tried to target me for an (according to him) illegal number plate. Unfortunately he was completely unaware of Section 14a of the 2002 Amendment to the Regulations. I don't know what his problem was (lack of sleep, had a row with his domestic partner, whatever) but he was a total embarrassment to that particular constabulary. I have only ever been stopped twice and the other time the officer was 100% professional in his dealing.

Got pulled over for a small plate in my jap-import MR2. I had a print-out of the legislation that says imported cars CAN have smaller plates but he wasn't interested. It was snowing, I'd just given my missus a lift to work and I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Cop tells me I have to get out of the car because he thinks I might try to flee... from a situation where I KNOW he's wrong and I'm right?! He then keeps me standing in the snow for 50 minutes while he checks my details and verifies what I've told him. At one point I hear him, on the radio, saying "Nah, no rush. Whenever you get a chance". After 50 minutes he hands the printout back to me, tells me I'm free to go and finishes with "You'd save yourself a lot of trouble if you had a normal size plate". Ah well, I'm sure forcing me to stand in the snow for 50 minutes soothed his inferiority complex.

I have just watched this video. It's really interesting and there are lots of good points. I was in a motorcycle accident just over 7 weeks ago. There was a broken down lorry on a single carriage way, with a 50 mile an hour , but I was travelling a little slower when I came across some mud and wet leave. In fact, it was a sunny day. Then, I drove to an area that shaded so slowed down. Nothing was behind me at this point. I came across a broken down lorry, so I stopped. My foot slipped, and my bike went. The lorry driver and his assistant helped me pick up the bike, the bike was ok. Then I asked the lorry driver if he would let me know if the road was clear. They were about to do that and I was just getting back on the bike when I was told to move. Which I was unable to do. I was rear-ended by van. I was hit then ended in a fence. I had some injuries. The van driver scarpered on foot and left his van, mainly because he couldn't drive his van away. So he ran away. Fortunately my bike was not written off. But the driver was uninsured and has not been identified. I have been riding bikes for years and this the first time I have had a motorcycle accident. I was breathalyse which was negative, I don't drink alcohol at all and don't ride my motorcycle when I am tired. I have had to apoint a solicitor to claim for an injury compensation.

Only been pulled over once, on my motorcycle. Turns out, wet, miserable evening and dark that my rear lights were out ...a bulb can blow at any time and frankly, glad that the blue lights that pulled me over were on a police car to point out the issue - than an ambulance coming to scrape me off the road because another car had unwittingly not seen me. Being a nerd, I carry spare bulbs and was able to sort myself out on the roadside, but be friendly and courteous with the police, they'll be just the same back with you 🙂

Something to add to increasing speed and stopping is that your brakes have to reduce the momentum of the vehicle. Basic physics dictates momentum is massive x speed x speed (MV²) which means double the speed is 4 times the momentum

GCM, I think it's pertinent to elaborate on some of the signals that Police might look for for confirmation that you are going to comply with the stop, but want to go somewhere that you feel is safer. Would things a flash of the hazards or a brief left-hand signal be enough, or would the officer initiating the stop be looking for something else?

It was not mentioned because the HORT1 is rarely used these days as most documents are available online and can be seen at the roadside. The RTA 1988 provided the HORT seven day system as a ‘defence’ to not being able to produce at the time of the request as it was acknowledged that people didn’t always carry the documents on them.

Speed limit signs are obviously there for a very good reason,as are speed cameras ,as a Driver of nearly 50 years experience (33 years as a HGV 1 Royal Mail Driver) I have 2 main complaints (I) make the speed limit signs visible (not obscured by trees/bushes etc ) & (ii) cut down on the actual cameras! An inexperienced driver who is on an unfamiliar road is spending as much time looking for the bloody things than they are actually watching where they are going!…..BANG!!!…Accident.😤

I had a stop night of the GE, about 1am. I was tired, and frankly very nervous seeing those blue lights flash up. Officers were really polite, even as I had to blow the breathalyzer (zero). Was let go with some advice for having longer rests late at night, avoiding driving that late if possible. I don't think I've driven after midnight since.

I have been pulled over twice, once when going through traffic controlled road works, I was following a very slow tractor and had gone past the sign that says wait here, the light’s changed to amber and red, I had no choice but to continue otherwise I would have stopped in no man’s land, however the copper wouldn’t have it and said that I should have stopped ! Another time I turned right at traffic lights displaying a green filter, pulled over and the copper said that it’s a no right turn ? I argued my case and offered to walk back and show him how the lights worked, he just said be more careful, got in his car and drove off ! As another point, a few weeks ago I witnessed a traffic officer on his phone while going around a roundabout, he was laughing his head off.

As an expat living in Canada, when it comes to speeding we have a tougher stance and it's only for going over any speed limit by 31mph Anyone driving a motor vehicle 50 Km/hr or more, over a speed limit, may be charged with stunting. The fine for stunting in Nova Scotia is $2,422.50 for a first offence, six points on your licence and an immediate seven-day roadside licence suspension.

10:40 if you are drunk, refuse the test. Cause as much delay without resistance as possible. Give your body as much time as you can to get down to a legal limit. Play off the fsct your drunk, stumble fall say youre going to vomit from the stress of being around police. Say you feel ill and so on. Dont get yourself done at the scene as while the mobile breathalyser is a tool for evidence the one they use as proper evidence is in the station. When arrested make yourself moving, keep blood flowing and breathe at a faster pace. Of course if youre hammed to hell you wont remember any of this but if youre just over the limit follow this advice, it could help you. If they ask why you refused at the scene say you felt uncomfortable around that/those officers and felt they may have contaminated the test. Just say thats how you felt not what they did. Dont resist doing the test at the station, and say from the start youre happy to do a test at the station but not with officers you feel you cant trust. I dont condone drink driving but people make mistakes and can learn from them. Im 6 months sober and have never drink and drove, this is just my advice

That's your advice is it. And when you refuse the breath test what do you think the officer will say 'no problem sir' and let you go! Well good luck with trying that because if you refuse the test you will still lose your licence and often for a longer period and a fine. Basically, you won't get away with it, not a chance.

Seeing collisions / fatalities does affect my road use. I ride a motorbike, so normally filter in long tailbacks to get to the front, where often there is a bad accident, now when I see blue lights ahead I pull over before I get to the front as just don’t want to see this level of trauma / anguish

Im sorry what Owen said about avoiding potholes looks like someone maybe drunk or impaired somehow is just bollox. Lots of people avoid pot holes, I do it all the time and see others doing it. When I see a car do it, I know they just avoided a pothole. How do I know? Well, im following them and I can see the pot hole(s) so its clear they avoided something, which demonstrates they ARE paying attention and in control.

I agree with you, wheel alignments are not cheap especially when they cause your tyres to wear out prematurely. A pot hole can seriously throw out your front end alignment and cause an imbalance in the wheel. Save yourself the hassle and avoid potholes

Some people sadly have a negative attitude to the Police. I have seen their care and kindness on many occasion. These videos are interesting, maybe some are a bit obvious but none the worse for that. The calm tone in a non confrontational situation are a good idea in my opinion. Prevention is the aim of the police force, most Police personnel just want to make life easier and safer for law abiding members of the public. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, police and public so getting stopped might be irritating when innocent or guilty of a minor infringement, the police are trying to keep us safe. Let's be nice to people doing a difficult job. Dealing with fatal crashes deserve respect it would make any of us strict about safety.

Thank you for the videos... I have a question. Was going down a 2 lane road, speed limit was 50Mph kept to the left lane with cruise control on... I saw a group of cars doing 40Mph so naturally went to the right lane and started passing all the cars with cruise control on. Noticed that all the cars were behind a police car, none of them would go past... since I had my cruise control on, I''ve gone past them, then joined back the left lane gettin in front of the police car. As soon as I did that the police car sped up and started following me really, really closely!!! I would consider dangerously close to me. Under 2 meters I would guess following distance. In case of an emergency they would have collided with me for sure... They did that for more than 1 mile. they just turned off after a while, but I would consider they put me and themselves in danger. What can I do in case it happens again??? It was quite stressful having a car following me from a really really dangerous distance. Never had any issues with police, no speeding tickets, ever and car is perfectly road legal. I was about to put my hazards on and pull over as it was dangerous. again... What can I do in case it happens again?

I believe that you should always have a way of making an emergency call when driving especially on a motorway. If you break down in a live lane or have an accident you should be able to call for help as quick as possible preferably hands free. As for speed cameras they should have the speed limit posted on them and display on the camera vans. I have been travelling along a road at the speed limit and the car in front braked on the approach to a camera they most of been unsure of the speed limit. 🤠

You can make an emergency call. The officer said so. In any event, if you were prosecuted, there are "special reasons" relating to the offence itself which you should put before the court-with proof, and which should avoid a fine and penalty points

One question I have for Owen: I feel like the 20mph zones being rolled out everywhere has made everyone including myself more impatient and less tolerable with speed limits, especially the speed limits on the motorway just for congestion relief, or claimed pollution reduction. Have you seen an increase in people breaking the speed limit since these zones have started rolling out? In my opinion, the more restricted we are becoming, the less people will feel like following the law. I'm not asking for an increase in speed on the motorway or local areas, I just feel like the restrictions are going a bit too far. Edit: a situation i faced many years ago, was potentially a drunk driver in front of myself while i was on a motorcyle, sat at the speed limit on the motorway. I had something thrown at me from the window of the car that hit my helmet. Then proceeded to brake check me. I slowed right down and moved to lane 1 which he followed suit and tried again. Admittedly, I broke the law speeding away past him, because i was going to die if i didn't do anything to put it bluntly. I got off the motorway at the next turning, and parked away where I wasnt followed. My worry is that if i had been pulled over, I could have explained it. If a camera had caught me, preserving my life would probably mean nothing. I think there is becoming a very fine line with situations like that.

I drive quite a lot on the M5 in Devon and Somerset and these days, surprise, surprise, is that many more people seem to be travelling more slowly or at least within tolerances above the limit. Maybe it's to save on fuel. However, and this is where we need more road policing, many people seem to think that the same speed limit applies when it is pouring with rain and conditions are difficult. Officially it does but the French, sensibly, think otherwise and so should we. A camera van is neither use nor ornament in these circumstances. As for potholes, it should be plain and obvious to a following police officer that there has been an unusual manoeuvre to avoid a pothole if the driving is otherwise ok and not an excuse to stop someone. So they might be pulling someone who is trying, maybe on an unfamiliar road, to avoid a burst tyre and crash.

If you kill or maim whilst driving drunk, drugged or distracted by texting or otherwise manipulating a phone or similar; then aside of any custodial and financial penalties, you should never be allowed to drive again in this country. Only when the lifetime loss of the perpetrator's driving licence is introduced in legislation and applied by the courts will hard-core offenders and those indifferent to the right to life of other people consider their selfish behaviour because of its effects and affects upon themselves. If you agree with the foregoing paragraph, please copy and paste and share as you see fit, perhaps including your MP. Let's encourage the people we know who do this to think again and the politicians to properly change the law. A driving licence is a privilege to permit the holder get around and / or earn a living - it is not permission to selfishly kill or maim other innocent people with impunity.

Great video , could u ask Owen what he thinks about people driving under the speed limit , for instance driving a 30 in 60 etc.. When I did my test I would have been failed for that, a lot of crashes are because of young motorists in underpowered cars over taking slow drivers.

30 in a 60 is a bit dangerous. I often go 40 in a de restricted as dear can run out into the road and any other animals or people doing a dangerous overtake coming the other direction. Also on smart motorways I always go 10mph what they say sometimes even 15mph incase the signs changed what was displayed. Also a lot of people are trying to save fuel now.

Ive been stopped 5 times when i was on a 125. Had the "vechile fits description of stolen vechile" and the "thats not a 125" which is just pathetic when i was doing less than 60 mph on the dualie i got pulled on. For them to them inspect the bike (tread depth, lights etc) LOOKING for things to get me done for after they found it was in fact a 125cc.

Appears to be a reasonable policeman. over here in Australia I lived in Melbourne, there was a time bogus police were pulling cars over. I always told my daughter to drive to a servo or police station.
