Using the e-tube app! I think typical Di2 users will generally fall into two categories; those who buy their bike from the bike shop and take it back when anything goes wrong; and those who love to tinker and to their own maintenance and also maybe (like me) build their own bikes. The former group will probably never experiment with all the features in e-tube, the latter group probably will. I like to tinker with electronic gears just as much as the mechanical parts of the bike! It's always amazed me what you can actually do with Di2 that isn't really 'advertised' by Shimano, in terms of the connections and minimum components required and what will work with what! I have built some very unusual bikes with Di2 that weren't designed for it and have even spliced Di2 cables together to make a bespoke cable. It was very fiddly, because the wires are so small (and the silicone sheathing so relatively thick) but it works perfectly!

Di2 is expensive but I've found it to be so worth it. The shifting is always spot-on, no need to fuss with cable tension. It's quick. There's also auto-trim on the front derailleur depending on what rear cog you are in. I also think there you should have also mentioned the synchronous shift modes. Most recently I have fallen in love with full synchronous mode, which you didn't mention here!
@user-un6md9hh5x3 ай бұрын
Another vote for Full Syncro mode here. 100% right hand shifting for me now. Integration with my Garmin head unit alerts when the next front ring shift is about to happen - which you do have to account for to allow both derailleurs to do their thing. It's a small inconvenience compared to the benefits of getting a linear progression up and down the gear ratios and automatically avoiding cross chaining. I don't think I'll ever ride anything but Full Synchro again. I kept the left hand buttons 'as is' just in case... 3K miles later, I literally haven't used them once. With my hood top buttons configured for page left and page right on my Garmin, I'm wondering if there's really anything I could/should configure the unused left buttons for...

Free up another paddle on the right using front shift next. Meaning it'll need just 1 paddle to switch your front chainring. The extra paddle can be then used for other stuff like the new garmin 1050 bike bell or lap function. Or for gravel grx I think some dropper posts can be activated via ant+ which can be assigned to the extra paddle.

I have got the 105 Di2 so only 4 buttons available. I have decided to embrace the technology though and run full synchronised shifting meaning that I only need my right hand shifters to shift up or down (long hold shifts 3 gears) and I don't need to 'worry' about the front derailleur as that is done automatically. It is fully customisable so I don't see why you should not set it up to suit your needs and then leave the the tech to do the work for you. This means that I have both buttons on the left hand shifter available to control my head unit, or whatever else equipment you might want to operate with a quick click of a button on the go. I do of course see the benefit of the buttons in the hood on the more expensive shifters but until I win the lottery my 'poor man's' version will have to do 😊

Plan is to make my way to Rome by train then cycle up the west coast of Italy before taking a left to visit San Remo and Monaco and then kind of taking a diagonal through France in to Belgium, take the Ferry over to GB and then cycle up to Liverpool. My concern is that the bike I want comes with 105 DI2 and I obviously don't want it to run out of power. Would I be best getting a spare battery at the time or if I am on a long flat stretch of road would it make sense to put the bike in to a sensible gear and then just unplug the battery for however long. My only complaint with my Ultegra set up is that I just can't seem to find a smooth "sweet spot" of rear downshifting when the chainring moves from the large ring down to the small. I've reviewed gear ratio tables for my setup and a 2 gear shift "up" in the rear to compensate is the right gear ratio adjustment. But a 2 gear shift is slow, chattery, and prone to pedal skipping just when I'm starting my climb. A 1 gear shift up on the rear is smoother but too much of a "hamster wheel" jump on my legs. (Going the other direction from small chainring to large and a compensating 1 gear downshift in the rear is smooth and hardly noticeable.) After much testing of different downshifting combinations, I've resigned myself to just "living with it". I've setup my Wahoo Bolt to show gear positions so at least I know when my next "clicK" will do it. :-(

I have just had to figure out why my Di2 suddenly started having intermittent issues whereby it would stop working for a few seconds then work again for a few seconds. This was a nightmare. Thankfully, I didn't need either new derailleurs or shifters. I have throughly loved it until I needed new parts.

The benefit is it’s electronic, bringing accuracy, smoothness, speed etc, but there’s no need for it to be wireless. The components are permanently on the bike, they’re not removed and replaced on every ride, so it may as well be wired, you then have all the benefits, but no risk of interference or hacking. It can still have wireless Bluetooth connectivity for app control, but absolutely doesn’t need to be wireless between the shifter and derailleur.

However, major problem - he could not shift either deraileur and claimed he charged system by night before. Not the place to have this type of problem and further confirmed my buying decision. Cheers to those who want more tech , expense and complexity to their cycling experience.

Just like your gear cable can snap, a Di2 can fail too (the guy was probably leaning his bike on the leaver, pushing the buttons, draining the battery over night…happens way too often). Altho, Di2 maintenance is much easier than maintaining mechanical groupset, especially in wet/muddy weather

Mechanical is pretty good. The advantages of di2 for me are easier with small weak hands and slightly better when you need to quickly brake and shift simultaneously.

This reminds me of my new humidifier. It replaced the old one that had 3 setting and on/off button. The new one has the same controls only to set it up you need download the app first. It also has touch control display that never works from the first touch, only after many tried. I recently looked at new cars to replace my 10years old Accord. You need to take a course to know all useless bells and whistles that car has and 99 % are totally useless. Electronic gear shifting is terrific tool to extract money from clueless customers and unless you are Cav type sprinter who’s income may depends on speed of shifting gears, Di2 or anything similar reminds me of my new humidifier. Tech for the sake of tech. Makes no sense.

I would expect Shimano di2 to be able to update the firmware via the app. But no, you have to buy additional tools for that. Ridiculous. It’s 2024 Shimano, come on!

You can update from the app.... I mean my last generation ultegra can anyway....

@@smithandshortdogsNot the shifters unless they are hardwired
@@joelnace1793only with wireless protocol updates (“bluetooth” module update) need wires. No need fo expensive tools, just plug the FD cable to the STI and update it…or let the workshop do it at your next service (in EU, by low, they aren’t allowed to charge you for updating)

I wonder if its possible to hijack the signal and shift someone else's bike.

I just downgraded to friction mechanical shifters. I can now shift the entire width of the cassette in 0.4 seconds and go on holiday with the money I saved.

and you even "see" in what gear you are without any tech

love this! but, please, your one-man-camera guy who thinks he can do all: rather stand still with the cam and adjust the brightness of the image, instead of doing inconsistent moves with a crapy gimbal. the host is enough. he has it. all. content and presence. if u wanna do camera - go to hollywood. this is a 'content king' channel.

Know it now uses wifi and BT as the hacking scanners can attack it using wifi, the far distance control from its high speed 5ghz wireless coms gives thes hackers plenty of range to play with, if they done like sram and used the close range high speed 2.4ghz it would have to be 10ft from the bike to work it would be almost impossible
