Thank you so much! I just have one question, if a mutation occurs, does that alter the complementary base pairing? And so does that cause another mutation?
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 5 жыл бұрын
Yes that can happen. There are other types of mutation as well as the ones shown in the video.

Hi Sir, thanks for the video! but i just wanted to ask if the gene is switched off when its meant to be on what effects could this have? thank you.
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 3 жыл бұрын
If a gene is switched off then that cell will not make the protein encoded by the gene. This could have a minor effect for example if another protein can carry out a similar function. However, it could have a dramatic effect. For example, certain genes produce proteins involved in regulating the cell cycle. If one of these is turned off, that could cause the cell to undergo uncontrolled mitosis, leading to a tumour.

Hello, I’m confused on the difference between genes and DNA? I thought it was DNA sequence that determines the amino acids, but here you have said its the base sequence of the gene. Are they interchangeable? Or is gene just one of the triplets of bases (e.g ATG) and the DNA is the entire sequence with multiple triplets of bases
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons Жыл бұрын
A gene is a stretch of DNA that encodes for a specific protein. The base sequence of the DNA in the gene determines the amino sequence of the protein and these bases are read as triplets. Some genes contain a few hundred bases (or even fewer) and some contain hundreds of thousands of bases. Any DNA that is not in a gene is called non-coding DNA and in fact most DNA in a human is non-coding.

Hi on my textbook it tells me there are different types of mutations (e.g. deletions or insertions) - do we need to know this for the AQA specification?

Those terms are not on the AQA spec. However, in the exam they could give you information on any type of mutation and ask you questions on it.
