GCSE Science Chemistry (9-1) - Tests for Gases

In this GCSE science chemistry video we look at the tests for gases oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and chlorine. Learning these tests is crucial for exams as testing gases is a regular question In paper 2.
Gas tests include:
Squeaky pop test for hydrogen
Relight a burning splint in oxygen
Limewater test for Carbon dioxide (made with calcium carbonate - not calcium chloride as I accidentally say in the video)
Litmus test for chlorine

1, Hydrogen: "Pop" sound when taking a flaming splint (matchstick) near the reaction vessel. 2, Oxygen: A "glowing" splint put near the mouth of the reaction vessel, then it will turn out flaming again. 3, Carbon dioxide: Test with lime water, a positive result is turning out a milky solution. 4, Ammonia: Turns red litmus paper to blue. 5, Chlorine: Turns blue litmus paper to red then bleach

Those who cannot hear well, can put a glass slide above the splint and will observe droplets of water made.

If your hearing is impaired, you can put a glass slide over the splint and you will see water droplets made. You can test the water droplets with cobalt chloride paper , which will turn pink.

There's another way to test for CO2: trap the gas in a test tube, light a splint and place it in the test tube. *The flame will extinguish*

Sir I am confused while you testing for hydrogen what you have added Dil or concentrated HCl I think it is concHcl due to fumes am I right

Hi Obla, I used HCl. The more concentrated the acid the quicker the reaction (hydrogen gets produced faster), the more dilute the acid the slower the reaction (hydrogen gets produced slower).
