why are some of these uploaded so many years after they happened

Since all the talks are behind a paywall, the best talks are probably not released and they wait longer for really good talks to be released for free. Just my guess.

These other replies are correct, that the talks sit behind a paywall for a while - but I, for one, think it's great that we get them for free eventually, and acknowledge that, whilst GDC is a business and may not be everything it used to be, if it didn't concern itself with making money, then these interesting and insightful talks wouldn't exist.

This talk was excellent. Although some complain about it's academic nature, it contains great insights and frames game design/development in useful ways. Frank is obviously very knowledgeable and passionate, which does lead to him to wax philosophical and over complicate the language he uses to explain these concepts, but these concepts are so fundamentally interesting and useful to consider. This talk has opened up a few new avenues for me, and helped me name and make sense of some of concepts I've encountered but not crystallised clearly in my mind. This talk not for everyone, but it's a real gem IMO.

Very well presented, but why do I have the feeling that there is absolutely nothing to take out of this talk? Can somebody sum up his points for me? It's only blah blah for me...

I came away with the same feeling. It's like critical ludoliterature analysis or something. Like a bunch of fancy words to pull out an abstract idea the original authors never really intended. Maybe cool if you're into writing essays but not as helpful if you're trying to make a game, I think. It'll never be prescriptive.

His thesis is essentially that games which are superficially "rational" actually contain an aesthaetic quality that is BECAUSE of its systematic design and not in spite of it. Similarly there is a system of design within more "emotional" games allows the game a sense of truth that is different from other mediums. He is saying that as a community of devs we should not shun the other away or say one is more important than the other, but to embrace both and the truths that they are able to express. There's a lot to take out of this lecture honestly, what I wrote down was just a small part of it.

Well, honestly, I have never seen a game designer go against this thesis. Gamers and game critics, sometime, yes, but not game designers. But I might be wrong, of course. However, when you advance such a thesis, the first steps should be to 1/ show that the thesis is new, and 2/ show that the thesis is needed. I haven't seen any effort in the talk to communicate such things. So, my feeling is that he is just talking with style about obvious things. And sometimes about things that are obviously wrong, as his thesis about "thought made visible to itself". I understand that GDC is not a scientific conference, but I still expect the talks to be rooted in some reality.

A problem with showing that this thesis is needed is that it's about choosing goals, not about reaching them. The best he could do is to randomly ask game developers to read the text in advance and then say that X% developers thought it was a good idea.
