I've been laid off twice this year from 2 different game studios; could I be laid off a third time in a row?

All good advice until you have to deal with those people who have all the bad traits who actually run the studios.

it really just boils down to if the managers like you or not. All this soft skill BS is just an excuse. Doing your job right should be enough, but those manager loosers want to have people around them the just find nice. Like the soft skills of a secretary is to have a lot of soft skills in their chest area.

@@HansPeter-gx9ew Yes and no. Yes, people do have biases and agendas, and no, if you can't communicate a mission update to the hard worker or back then he's gonna burn through time and resources doing something irrelevant.

The 3 years/90% layoff is a generational thing that exists outside of the industry, too. I've had this in shipping/logistics, postal work, healthcare, and other industries. There's just too many candidates vying for too few positions and available personnel are like toilet paper today. This has a lot of burnout consequence, too. And it's not personal. Investors move money in and out, and companies have to pivot when that happens. It's not a moral/ethical failure whatsoever.

His talk is BS, all that matters is that the managers find you nice, you have little control over this except if you are a top actor. You need to do your job right, this is not a matter of course and it also depends how fast and well you do it. his talk is US specific. In Europe you can hold on IT jobs for much longer. Having Burnout is the workers fault, bc you have a million idiots in the industry trying to impress the managers by doing overtime, crunching etc. and thus raise the bar. Funny thing is that they won't get any out of this bc the managers will just assume to be this the new level of productivity, which exactly happened.

This is a terrible example of the wrong person given the floor to speak - he is a game designer, but the reality is, he worked on an MMO when the game design of an MMO was well and truly established - so what exactly was there left to design... SWTOR only survived due to the cashshop built in to it and brought nothing original to the genre. Saying game designers are the most important due to them making games fun is deluded completely. Anyone can be a critic and that is all that is needed to iterate gameplay. Any aspect in an industry where you have to 'survive' is by its own admission, a toxic industry... AAA = Survive Indie = Thrive The industry is due a crash and its finally happening for the greater good - been too many decades now with everyone just churning out predatory cash grab rubbish with no decency whatsoever. The industry thought they could keep getting away it and now they are being forced to reap what they've sown. Anyone working in the industry that is complacent of this fact is just part of the problem. Just following orders... Be the change you want to see in this ruined industry. Thats the only way it can be repaired and never forget this: you dont make games, you make products - people pay money for the product and those people arent gamers, they are customers - dont ever forget that!

We have too many black people as rich rappers and pro-athletes. Too many asian people in tech jobs. Too many jewish people as lawyers or bankers. etc. Yeah this GDC talker was offensive. Just because people are white you shouldn't get a free pass to talk down against them.

Please explain to me one more time why softskills should be important? You have a task to do, and either you can or cannot do it. Everything else is stupid and just depends on if the manager likes you or not. I worked my ass off to get to the point that understand IT and math, while he says this doesn't matter much for you success. It doesn't matter bc of weird guys like him who have little technical background but run a company. I mean, very frustrating. As far as I know the lecturer (who was never introduced, his name is Rich Vogel) is a game designer and manager. Of course he wont value technical skills as much as his main task, stupid soft skills needed for manipulating the stuff like a shepperd. ... these mind games at the work places are the biggest pain in the ass and the reason I try to be Indi or Freelance, to avoid any contact with such toxic enviroments were real skills don't matter. btw., Game Design is by far easier to learn then development and thus less paid and less respected. neutral sidenote: his new studio is fonded by Chinese, think of that what you want
