Balancing Cards in Clash Royale

In this 2017 GDC session, Stefan Engblom, game designer on the Clash Royale team, talks about the philosophies and principles used for balancing cards and gameplay in Supercell's Clash Royale. This game is extremely unique with so much design genius put into it and had a very passionate, active competitive scene for years. Damn shame recent updates have been especially predatory, feels like their stance on monetizing has taken a 180 and they're killing the golden goose.

I do not accept that there is no process to setting elixir costs or what to change to balance. Everything does not need a concrete system, but there is a process. He even talks about the Jedi curve. Either he is hiding something or honestly has god like intuition.

Listen to anyone who talks about the "meta" or "metagame" for any competative game and you will find that is exactly what people mean when they say it. Words don't mean what dictionaries or Wikipedia say they mean, they mean what we use them to mean. This is why the definitions of words change as the way people use them changes, not because Oxford decided " this word means this now".

He's talking about the metagame, not metagaming. 2 very different terms! Unless you're playing politics(another gaming term), metagaming is hard in a cardgame, though there's almost always a meta.

Another place this happens in English: Say we're in a car and I'm talking about how I want to travel. You could use a definition to prove that we are traveling right now, and that traveling doesn't mean going abroad. But it should be obvious when I say "I want to travel" I don't mean "I want to exist in a moving vehicle". Adding a suffix like -ing changes the meaning, and can change the word entirely. You might think I'm being "mean", but I'm just conveying "meaning". Nothing mean about meaning!

Royal g was ment to be the strongest pushing tool, but really not so good in tournament. In fact top players want it buffed because it loses too much in tournaments, but the lower players can't fight it well. Ironic right
