NOx sensors represent state of the art technology that is applied to gasoline lean burn engines, as part of an engine control and diagnostic system, used to insure proper operation of the NOx emission control system. These sensors can be incorporated, independent of the NOx emission control technology used on the vehicle, and their function is primarily to monitor the NOx conversion efficiency and regeneration of the catalyst material. The sensors can work as part of a feedback to the ECM, and to make real time adjustments to the NOx regeneration using a momentary 3 to 10 seconds rich mixture.
The principle of operation of the NOx sensor is based on proven solid state technology developed for oxygen or wide-band sensors. The dual chamber zirconium sensing element and electro-chemical pumps, work in conjunction with precious metals electrodes, to control the oxygen concentration within the sensor chambers and then convert the NOx to nitrogen.
The sensor sends an output voltage signal that is directly proportional to the NOx concentration. The NOx sensor can be incorporated upstream and downstream of the catalyst, to provide a feedback control loop to the ECM, indicative of the ... Get the whole story right here in this video... Enjoy...

Yes, it decomposes the NOx and then once the NOx is decomposed the O2 is separated and then the extracted O2 is measured. These chambers are tiny and minute, so we're talking about small amounts of measured gases. But, this system stresses the importance of a clean running engine. These guys are very sensitive and prone to damage if the engine is not maintained properly. Thanks for posting.

Thank you. So far as cleaner I don't know what you're referring to, but the NOx sensor is a modified wide-band sensor made to sense NOx Oxygen decay. They don't work like the old O2 sensor, if that's what you mean and their purpose is to only monitor the NOx catalyst, as seen in our other videos. Thanks and let me know if that made sense to you.

Is it basically a sensitive wideband or what? Seems it still measures the oxygen content of the exhaust.

I have a problem with my NOx Sensor unit on my MK5 Golf fsi.. got a major service and full diagnostic where VW quoted me over £600 for a replacement but seems to be a common issue.. I think its moisture or something of the sort thats caused the EML to come on and make it faulty.. how can i reflash or fix it?

The blue and light blue are electrode or catalyst? To measure the current, I would imaging you measure the purple and red electrodes instead of one purple one blue?

upper limit reached on an audi a4 for nox sensor? is this likely to be sensor or the Cat efficiency being poor with high nitrogen content, how would I test this? a gas anyaliser?

The NOx sensor ihave has 8 wires instead of 6. They go complicated with time...
