GE Control Board Replacement: 815 Error (Part #: WD21X24901) Model # GDT655SMJ0ES

Just for clarification 815 is not the error code it is the UI software version (ie: Version 8.15). If the door is "detected' as being open all of the LEDs will flash while in "Consumer Error Mode" (hold "start" and "select cycle" buttons for 5 seconds) If the door is detected as closed then all of the LEDs will remain steady on both of these indications will last for 10 seconds. If any errors are detected after 10 seconds they will be indicated by the illumination of the "Start", "Heated Dry", "Wash Boost", and/or "Clean" LEDs on the top display. The lock LED will always be illuminated, and does not indicate an error. Even on a machine that has no faulty conditions 815 will display on the segmented display because it is an indication of the UI software revision. If the owner starts a cycle and the machine acts as if the door is not closed there are two possibilities. A) The door switch is faulty; this can be determined by performing a continuity test with a multimeter. B) the main control board is faulty (if the door switch continuity test passes replace the control board). All of this information is in GE service manual 31-9253 for models DDT595SxJ0xx, GDF570SxJOxx, GDF650SxJ0xx, GDT655SxJ0xx, and GDT695SxJ0xx (the "x" characters are trim and color specific, but hold no bearing on the build)

Thanks...is there any benefit to a newer version software? My dishwasher has an 815 board but the new ones are 861. Or is there possibly a totally new board out ?

@@TeddyOberman I am unsusre if there is any benefit without a list of features or change log. It is possible that there is a new hardware revision of the board that also included a software/firmware version bump.

The annoyance of pressing the start button every time you open the door has burned me on numerous occasions. Although, I have already had to replaced the circulation pump, and the drain pump (x2) so I'll just settle for reliable parts that last longer than a year and a half...

I just wanted to drop a comment and commend you for making this. I've been suffering from this 815 error for six months. Resetting the power from the breaker had been working for a while but a few weeks ago it wouldn't suffice any more. I had previously called GE and they had no idea about this, they just said there's three boards and buying all three would be almost the same as buying a new one, so they suggested I did that. I've only had my GE Profile dishwasher for less than 5 years so instead, I purchased the board from Amazon ($105) and replaced it myself following your detailed step by step. It worked like a charm. The most complicated part for my model was to reconnect the wires onto the new board before raising back into the unit. My cables were very short so it was a bit complicated, but doable. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for showing us how to make this repair. It worked like a charm. My GE is slightly different (it doesn't have the metal box on the lower right hand side). The replaced board looked new but we have no easy way to test it. If someone told me the manufacturer programed the board to fail after a # of cycles, I'd believe it. Thanks again!

Thank you for posting this video. I was able to use your trouble shooting instructions, and reset my panel. I shut off the circuit braker for 5 minutes, and then went to press the start button, and voila, immediately I could hear the machine filling up with water. 🙏🙏

Resetting the power was becoming a pain, The repair shop wanted $400 to do this . Ordered the board direct from GE (FYI There is a updated motherboard with new part number) this video saved me hundreds. Ps my machine had short wires to make it a change.

Reset worked a few times, then stopped. Got the error code and ordered the control board and replaced it. You are my hero. This will likely be my last GE though. Bought an entire kitchen set, microwave, fridge, stove, and dishwasher. The microwave went too and replaced it and not all that old.

Just had this problem on my GDT655SSJSS which was only 5 years old and not used much. Power cycling the unit would resolve the issue for a couple of cycles but eventually got the hard stop. A great video!! This video fixed my 815 error on my GE dishwasher. Symptoms were just as described as my problem initially went away with unplugging the dishwasher. But over time, that didn't fix the problem. Only tough part can be putting back in the control panel board as it was a very tight fit on my dishwasher.

Thank you for doing this video. I was able to do the reset & our dishwasher worked for several months doing the reset almost every time it needed to be run. Eventually I needed to replace the control board, which has version 8.19 listed on it. Not sure how long it'll last. The bottom line is do not buy any GE appliances, as it's now owned by Haier, a Chinese company. GE sold their appliance division to them in 2016. When we did a kitchen upgrade we got all GE appliances, which was a big mistake. Our GE stove has a light constantly on, saying the surface is still hot.

Thanks Drew, big help. I had already changed the door latch which worked a few months, then stopped working. Put the old latch back and the machine again worked, but only for a few washes. I tried putting the other latch in again, but no go. At that point, I realized it is the control board (it always is), which I had already bought along with the latch. I too was receiving error code 815. Also, the light on my old board was flashing green. Need to find out what that means. I went ahead and installed the new board and now the unit is running, but I'm not confident it will last. Bad news is folks, my prior Maytag and Whirlpool Dishwashers, which were not cheap, only lasted about 6/7 years too before the control boards went. All appliances today have these control boards and they almost always go bad after 5 to 10 years. The days of 20 year appliances is long gone and that's tragic. If someone would come along a make a unit which lasted 20 years, I would pay a few hundred more for it and be happy. Spending $800 every 6/7 years for a new DW sucks.

One thing I might add.... I had to make sure the control board personality (jumper pins) were set to my model number.... there are only two "0" or "11" for the models todate... :)

Before doing that just test the latch alignment. I got the 3 beeps, unscrewed the latch, opened the door, manually placed the latch and it started working. Placed a few shims above the latch and it's all good now.

Excellent video all the way down to the size nut driver per screw. Have this panel ordered for a not used often GE DW. It fires up and chimes on it's own during the middle of the night and wakes me up!! Mine is not as fancy as all the controls are all on the facia. Thank you for doing.

Read that 815 Was the UI Software version. Against my better judgement, doubted that when I saw this (and couple other internet info) Bought new board>installed>no change in status. Quote from Sevrice Bulletin "Consumer Error Mode" On entry into C.E.M. the control reports the door status for 10 seconds. ...........The SSD (display) will indicate the UI software version (without a decimal) For example software version 8.08 will display as 808. 815 is the UI Software version. My issue? No spray during circulation cycle. Turns out I had calcified soap chunk blocking impeller. Took motor to the bench and operated in a vice. It ran/worked. Reinstalled. Back in business. Spent 110 bucks needlessly.

I found it much easier to lay dishwasher on its back for simpler access & board replacement as long as the hoses & power cord are long enough. Also make certain the parts you buy are specifically for your washer model number. These boards may look identical, but do not work on all models.

@Drewin' Around Mine made that sound for the past week but today everything is completely dead like I had turned off the breaker. I have checked that I have power to the AC connection under the toe kick but there are no lights of any kind and none of the buttons have any effect.

Anyone know what actually fails on the main pcb / board? I have mine on the bench powered up. The dc voltages all check out. It looks like the conformal coating that GE puts on the pcb might be causing the vias to the other side of the board to corrode? Already recapped it that didn’t solve.

Replacing the 3 electrolytic capacitors on my control panel PCB seemed to totally fix my dishwasher without paying for new boards. It was between states of no lights/dead and 3 beeps wouldn't start as if door was open. The switch/latch for door was fine on mine.

The fact that I could turn off the power for awhile and then run a cycle showed the the door switch was working. if that's not happening I'd start there.

A little tip before taking anything apart on any repair: pull out your phone and take a picture of the electrical connections. It gives you a reference for putting it back together properly,

please see Ryandavis 87 comment below/ THIS IS BAD INFORMATION!!!!!!!! 815 is not an error term. You must check the control board for 14 volts to determine if it is bad. 815 is just the software number. Based on this guy, I changed the control board and it was not the problem. It is all over the internet that 815 is an error term, except nowhere in the GE literature.

What's sad is that GE used cheap electrical components to build this board. You'll be lucky if this board lasts for two years. What a joke!
