Before i retired, i did probably about a 1,000 + of these repairs, in the last 10 years . In a 40 year career working on GE products, this run of dishwashers was/ is , hands down, the biggest boondoggle they have come up with so far . This model series, has got to have the record for most Factory service bulletins, ever !

Thanks for the info. I changed the control board and user interface and the machine came back to life. I started a wash and cancelled it. Worked great. For 5 minutes. As soon as that ended, it went dark again. I was touching things underneath and it beeped and came back on momentarily. I then took the little plug out of the sump and the panel lit up. I opened the door and closed it and it went off again.Some component is screwing up the electrical system.

Just a useful piece of advice - You don't have to unhook the cables. All you have to do is take out the two 1/4" hex screws at each bottom corner and slightly open the door and it will lift off the hinge assemblies. You don't even need to unhook the water or even pull the dishwasher out from the counter. Can save a bunch of time and effort by not pulling it out.
@asklingler
@asklingler Жыл бұрын
This sounds promising -- the hinge/door removal seems like the most effortful part of the operation. Which hex screws? The ones that seem to be behind and to the left of the plastic tensioner as seen in the video?

I saw another video showing this but that only seems to work with some models, my hinge system (ddt595ssj2ss) is just like the one in this video. These hinges are attached directly to the rails and will not detach like that unfortunately. I did find a way to remove the door without sliding the unit out though, I commented on that above.
@Belo83

You do have to remove the tensioned clips to get the door off on this model, but you can do it with needle nose pliers if you’re creative and can save a bunch of time.

As a 67 yo woman, I found your video to be extremely helpful. A couple things I found (as I was doing this myself, without help) when removing (1) the T25 hex screws: spray on some silicone spray and let it sit for a while, (2) the inner and outer door: lay the door on its side and loosen from the bottom up. No need for a helper or for a lot of upper body strength. I also found it easier to reattach the inner and outer doors by having them flat on the countertop.

Thank you for your excellent video. One thing to add (found out the hard way), if you disconnect the spring nylon cables, hook them in the parking J-hook notches provided just below the pulley. That way the spring will remain under some tension and avoid becoming disconnected from the nylon string end piece.

This video and the one diagnosing the problem was excellent!! I am fairly handy and not afraid to tackle many problems around the house, but I've stayed away from most things that have boards and lots of electrical components. This video made it all very simple and was easy to follow. For about $130 and a couple of hours of my time-I'm retired, I fixed our 3 year old dishwasher. My neighbor had the same problem with their 3 year old GE dishwasher and paid close to $500 for a repairman to replace both control boards. THANK YOU!

I have a much older GE dishwasher, it's from 2003. It's the one that came with the house when I bought it. A builder installed machine. The control panel went out on mines. I had started needing to shut off the power to reset it and it work for a few months doing that, but finally the machine went out. Since the machine is so old, I had to go on eBay to find a factory control board. At least with my machine the disassembly of the door was easier. I had thought about replacing the machine, but I thought I would give it a try in trying to repair it myself. I bought the part a couple of months ago and I finally got around to replacing the control panel today. For less than $100 I have a running dishwasher again.

Thank you Matt for doing this. I have the almost exact same dishwasher (6 years old) with almost the exact same symptoms, including intermittent beeping for months. This step-by-step tutorial gave me the confidence that I could do the exchange myself. Took me about an hour and a half because I kept watching the video step by step. The dishwasher seems to be working just fine again, thanks to the help from this video. A great service Matt.

This video was amazingly helpful to my husband and I when we were replacing the UI board in our DDT595SSJ2SS model. We had a similar problem that you had with the random beeping that went on for about 9 months until completely died. We found your video after following a professional video that didn't have the details we needed to separate the inner and outer door. Your video came through and was what we followed for the rest of the repair and reassembly. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this excellent video. I had a GE tech out and was told I would need to replace top and bottom PCBs. He said boards would cost 500 dollars and I would be better off buying a new dishwasher. My current one was a little over 3 years old. I found your video, describing the random beeping issue. I located the upper board for a little more than what you paid for yours. Total replacement time was about 45 minutes from start to finish.

My dishwasher was doing the exact same thing with making random noises then all of the sudden stopped working all together. After watching this video one time, I ordered the part and since I already had an understanding of how to replace it, this only took about 35 minutes to do. Very easy!! Thank you very much for posting this How-to!!!

Thank you! Worked for me and my gdt655ssj0ss. After a few months of the weird "random beeping" issue the dishwasher wouldn't respond. I replaced the Control Board first, but after about five minutes of looking like it was fixed, it became totally unresponsive. That's when I read (thanks to some of the responses here) that often both boards go out together. I couldn't pull the trigger right away; since I was unsure whether I should be dumping another $100 into trying to fix it myself. But I finally gave in, thanks to how simple your video made it look. And everything in this video was great, and true. I replaced my User Interface Board in 20 minutes without issue. It's been working for a month now. I can't thank you enough.

Thank you for doing this video. I feel like my husband and I just saved about 350.00 on a parts and repair bill. Our model is so close to yours but the DDT595 etc.......type model and we just installed ours and it went perfectly. It went so quickly I couldn't believe it and I know you saved us two + hours in time trying to figure it out ourselves. Thank you for that. You were so methodical and precise and everything went exactly as you did. Our pin set up was different than yours but the technique exactly right on. Again, thank you so much.........I was dreading the Holidays without a dishwasher, even though I don't mind hand washing dishes. The only thing different on our GE washer was that there were no clues anything was wrong except a few times it had been ending the cycle and when I would ck later to put the dishes away there would be water still standing in the bottom of the machine. Thus, I redid the load.........that happened a few times in about three months time so that was my only clue. Ours just totally lost power and not a light would come on in any sequence. Thanks again, you really saved us a ton of time and money. At 76 years of age we are still fixing most our home tasks so again, this was a great video. Kudos to you!!!

Thank you so much for providing such help to me and everyone!

Very helpful! Thanks! Be cautious when unhooking the pully cable. Keep it taught so that the cable doesn't become unhooked from the spring, or you'll have to pull the dishwasher halfway out to get it back together. If you're replacing a broken control cover, you'll have to remove the control assembly all the way out in order to get the cover snapped in correctly or you'll break the tabs on the cover. They break easily.

This was easy to follow and so useful. Many thanks Matt. Getting the kickplate back on was probably the most difficult part. Since my screwdriver wasn’t magnetized, I used tape to hold the screw in the screwdriver and also tape to hold the insulation back from the hole that the screw went in when installing the kickplate.

Thank you so much for this video. I will say for our dishwasher, we ended up not having to replace the board. First we verified that 14V was coming from the power board. Then, after removing and disassembling the door, I checked that all switches had continuity when pressed. After that, I was able to get the board to come back alive by shorting the GND and REST pins while the board was plugged in and connected to a powered on main board. Those pin labels are visible at 20:10 in the video, to the left of the 888 display. The exposed traces are visible at 22:32, above the jumpers. Once shorted for a second or two with a jumper wire, the board came alive. You can also use these pins/traces to at least verify you are getting 5V to the board (from the 14V). Hopefully that fix holds. EDIT: The reset held for one wash, and dishwasher is unresponsive again. Will attempt another reset but not holding my breath.

Excellent video!! I had similar symptoms with my GDF630PGM0WW 3 year old model. After the "Breaker Box Shuffle" too many times, it no longer responded. I disassembled mine yesterday, ready to insert my new UI and silicone light pipe. Much to my dismay, it looks like my front control panel plastic assembly was all broken up inside and the screws holding in the circuit board had been over-tightened, breaking the holding tabs. 🤔I have never opened up the dishwasher for repairs before yesterday. and it was SUPPOSEDLY BRAND NEW when I bought it back in March 2019. I bought a new control panel assembly and am waiting for that to arrive next week. When I finally get to insert my new UI board, I hope that I get my dishwasher working at long last! Once again, kudos for an incredibly helpful, detailed video. 👍

Great video. Just finished replacing my UI board and this video saved me lots of time and many swear words. One thing I did differently was when I separated the two parts of the door, I left it laying flat rather then standing it up. After the screws were out, I just pushed from the bottom rather then pulling from the top. It worked like a charm first time with zero fenagling. Putting it back together laying down was just as easy.

Hey first just wanted to thank you for the thorough and in depth review. Even something as simple as fine and coarse threaded screws which I mixed up haha. Want to add for anyone who put in a new floor or just doesn’t want to deal with pulling the dishwasher out, which is arguably the hardest part of this fix. You can use a pair of needle nose pliers to unclip the door hinge springs. It’s harder to reclip them but if if you take your time it can be done. Mine actually came off their springs but you can reach under and to the side to reclip them to the springs. This saved me a bunch of time and frustration as my countertops and floor install makes pulling out the dishwasher a huge effort. You may need to remove the 2 metal hinge pieces marked L and R. This is a simple 1/4 or Phillips to do so.

You saved my life and this expensive dishwasher my house came with. Two things took me way too long on this 1. If your counter top is some kind of rock (we have some fake rock/stone that looks fancy) the dishwasher is going to be screwed into the cabinets... After struggling for 45 minutes and ripping a screw our of the cabinet I figured it out 2. Pay attention to how the control board at the bottom sits before you excitedly pull it out to see the LED only to spend way too much time trying to get the damn thing back in. But other than that a pretty straight forward process!

Thank you for this how to post. Just changed my board out in a few minutes instead of hours thanks to your step by step tutorial. My only snafu occurred when I lifted the inner door from the outer door, I popped the cover plate off of the top and it broke all of the tabs off so it wouldn't;t stay on securely. This was an outstanding video/how to for replacing the user interface board. Great job, very informative and shows me exactly what to do! Thank you Matt!

Thanks Matt, this was great! I did mine today and it's currently washing dishes. Your video and steps were spot on. I had all the tools needed and didn't have to go down to the basement to grab a missing something. Someone suggested separating the door panel on its side. This worked much better for me, it slide apart easily on its side. I had to take mine apart twice. I either didn't clip in one of the cables to the UI tight or didn't push down a jumper tight so while I checked the pins twice might not have pushed something tight. You can get to the jumpers without separating the display as there is a cutout on the bottom.

Dear Matt, thank you so much for your videos on GE dishwasher repairs!! I haven't checked out your other videos yet (excuse me if you've already made the following), but please consider making videos that span the breadth of life with as much detailed instruction and with your powerful calming "it's going to be alright" affect: how to handle your first broken heart, how to be respectful to women, children, and well pretty much everyone, how to train a puppy, test taking tips, how to rub bees' wax into leather footwear, how to cook like you give a damn, self haircuts, music appreciation, washing your neck (is it a part of your face or body?), etc., etc.

Matt, you just saved me a lot of money. Had already replaced a bad control board. Thought I had another go bad and ordered a replacement. That didn't fix the issue and swapping the UI board out didn't, either. It was your video that pointed me to the jumpers on the new UI board since that paper didn't come with my new board. Once I corrected the jumper position, I was back up and running. THANK YOU!

Very helpful, clear video. Straight forward with no unnecessary comments. Followed procedure as done in the video and my dishwasher is working again. Saved a lot of money by doing it myself. Thanks.

Matt, Thanks for the video. My dishwasher, GDT695SMJ5ES, is very close to your video but 3.5 years old. I did as you instructed on both of your videos, found power coming from the power board and then bought the UI board. Replaced and it works great!

@Matt Payne, I am grateful you made the effort to post this here. I was able to view it to confirm the part I needed and then feel confident in getting this unit apart. After viewing the video, it actually was quite simple to perform.

Matt. .this was an excellent instruction video...I'm glad you specifically pointed out the fact that the new control board jumper pins were set with open pins...I would have missed that when I installed the new board so you saved me a lot of grief and (of course) money Thanks

Thanks for this it was very helpful. With my unit (model ddt595ssj2ss ) I didn't have to move the unit out of it's spot. With the door shut, I was able to unhook the white plastic tension tab attached to the nylon string with a hooked pick. The plastic has a hole in it, I unhooked the plastic and pulled straight out. If you look below the hinge area , there is a little bent up tab that is meant to hold the string (you can see it in your vid at 10:20) I pulled out the tab and slid the string in that tab. It's held securely in place but I still put screwdriver on each side though the holes just in case it slipped out. i didn't want to have to move the unit out to retrieve the string. Then I removed the door and took it apart like your video. Again very helpful, but doing this saved me a lot of time and trouble.

I too left my unit in place and just removed the tab with needle nose pliers, after reading your comment I replaced everything using the reverse of your technique and it worked great, thanks!

Thanks for the video. My dishwasher is the exact same model and I have tested the 120V for power and the 14V to the UI. Oddly I get 119.5V power and 13.5V for the lead to the UI. So it looks like I will be replacing the user interface. I did notice one thing in your video when you released the door tension pulley there is a catch to place it in when it is removed. There is a little 'tab' to the left of the wheel that is used as a catch for the plastic hook. A better look is in your video @ 10:28 -10:34. As a side note, after watching this and other videos the lights my dishwasher UI lit up and I was able to get the dishes done. Thank you for a powerful video.

Fantanstic video and step by step instructions. Replaced both lower board, UI control panel in door and door latch. Had the jumpers on the UI pin 2 only on one leg, corrected and it works. 1st time lower board was bad. 2nd time replaced UI control board and door latch with jumper wrong. 3 rd time moved jumper 2 to both post and don’t you know it works. Not quite as good as the new dishwasher I bought but great enough for my daughter who now has a 2 year old dishwasher. My daughter thanks you a million times.
