I agree completely. In the West, the foundation of a classical education was learning Ancient Greek and Latin. An Ethiopian equivalent would certainly entail learning Gi'iz in addition to Greek and/or Hebrew, so that students may engage fully with the sacred and secular texts of Ethiopian antiquity.

Maybe we need to update our vocabulary to move from calling these very vibrant languages "dead" to a designation of "no longer spoken natively" while no longer spoken natively, Ge'ez is clearly very alive and beautiful.
@katamattyon

That would be a good idea. In cases like Hebrew, the language was not spoken natively for a long time, but now it is by millions of people - it seems overly dramatic to say a dead language was resurrected.
@Stevie-J
@Stevie-J 18 күн бұрын
It's "dead" because it no longer grows or changes. Like a cut flower in a vase. In this sense I feel it's appropriate to say that Hebrew was revived. Latin and Ge'ez could be resuscitated also, if people choose 🙂

I am like you, fond of this language. Your effort to have a conversation is also a good gestre. I am in the process of writing a brief Geez grammar which is in draft format. Actually it is quite probable. It seems to be the consensus among many European scholars as well that Ge'ez is the foundation from which some of the oldest languages were formed. Hence making it arguably the oldest language. Older than Hebrew, Arabic, Amharic and even Tigrinia. In the future, it wouldn't hurt to take a world history class or two. They can be found free of charge. tschuess

How beautiful his name - Joy of Zion! Hearing the Hebrew connection also in the Ge'ez word for "sky" - which he pronounced as "samai" - the Hebrew sounds like "shamayim," I wonder (based on Judges 12:6) if it might be that these people were of Ephraim.

i think one reason ge'ez is not used outside the church is because of 2 things. 1. ሞክሼ ፊደላት and 2. same sounding words with different meanings. 1. basically ሞክሼ ፊደላት are letters that "sound the same" - ህ/ሕ/ኅ ጽ/ፅ ስ/ሥ ጵ/ፕ 2. then there is the same sounding words - መሐረ (have mercy)/መሀረ (taught) and way more... the problem with these two things is that words can sound exactly the same but have different meanings based on the way it's spelled which makes ge'ez unsuitable for speaking. but this wasnt always the case because the ሞክሼ ፊደላት used to have different pronunciations. unfortunately, these pronunciations have been forgotten.
@us3rG
@us3rG 9 ай бұрын
Our way of sounding words with different meaning is also our way. We considered the voice and manner it was articulated to into consideration, hebrew and arabic are similar and we began with similar written letters or alphabets written right to left like hebre and arabic, we didn't have vowels too Then vowels show up and abugida (do not know if invented independently or if sanskrite has influence) The we have current fidel

Ge'ez is Gods language given to his people. It comprises of all the audible sounds in their most basic form. This allows for the formation of new words quite effortlessly and allows for near infinite scaling of the language. Sadly, these truths have been buried and lost to the masses of the world for far too long. One only needs to look at any of the other languages that have been created by man afterwards to see how all others fall short in comparison. It's almost as if, the peoples making and developing new languages were trying to forge their own way apart from God. I guess the various rulers knew from a long time ago, if you can keep people from understanding themselves, they are far more likely to listen to whatever bs you tell them is correct.

How in the world you called Geez as Ethiopic? Come on brother, Geez is Agazianic language. The original language of Tigree (Northern Eritrea) Tigrigna(Kebesa southern Eritrea) and Tigray(Northern Ethiopia). Of course, the Amhara people adopted Geez, but it is not their original language. Yes, of course the same as Tigrigna speaking people of Eritrea and Tigray, the Amhara people also played a big role in keeping Geez to survive its existence(Specially in the Orthodox Coptic Church). No one denied that, but it is not Ethiopic by nature though. So, please don't twist historic nature of this ancient language. It is Agazianic language.

Please read this article mereja.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31921&mobile=on You will find out who they were and where they came from and how they end up settled in Eritrea , in Tigray and then in some parts of the Amhara regions. Eritrean Tigrigna and Tigree as well as Tigrayans of Ethiopia are the closest ethnic group of Agazians(Himyarite) who used to speak Geez langauge. Where as Amhara people were Habesha( Habeshaite) which they inherited Geez from Agazians to begin with . The reason for that is that b.c both Agazians and Habeshaite were intermingled in the Arabian land and also in the now called Ethiopia and Eritrea in a span of thousands of years. Anyways read the article from the link for your knowledge.

May be for you it is a joke, but for Tigrigna and Tigree speaking people of Eritrea and Tigray, this Geez and Agazian identity is in their blood. I don't know about you though. By the way, sometimes the Amhara people claimed that they have have a 3000 years of history is not b.c Ethiopia itself has 3000 years of history, it is b.c of Agazians 3000 years of history. So to begin with Geez and the so called 3000 years of history that is claimed by the Amhara is not your history. It is Agazians history. The fact is on the ground. You can prove it if you go to Aksum and Adulis(the old port during the kingdom of Aksum).

Who told you Gieze is dead?? They are teaching it in advanced Universities throughout Europe, Canada and America. But, Gieze is not dead in Ethiopia. It was simply ignored by Ethiopians only during the last 80 years. Anyway, Learning Gieze takes only 3-6 months especially to an Amharic or Tigrigna speaking student cause these 2 languages in particular are extremely related and directly derived from Gieze. By the way , all other languages spoken in Ethiopia are closely related and derived from Gieze as well. Today, Oromigna use English alphabet instead of Gieze alphabet. Why?? Not because English alphabet is more adequate to write Oromigna accurately. No! Not at all. English alphabet is inefficient even for English language itself let alone Oromigna. Oromigna writing is replaced by English alphabet only to divide people of same origin. It is also to undermine Gieze alphabet and language at its original birth place. Gieze alphabet has the most complete and adequate letters to write any human literature and language on the planet!!Furthermore, Gieze alphabet is not only best to write and record human language but even to write and record any animal sounds with fantastic accuracy. The “thief or the “invader” wants Ethiopians to become detached and disconnected to the language, history, culture, religion etc.... and what better way is there than undermining Gieze so to someday somehow claim Gieze as his own instead. So, I advise you and others like you, to teach the Gieze you already know at least in your community so it will remain alive and well. It is sole property/ inheritance of Ethiopians. Gieze is Ethiopian people’s invention. It was not copied from any other people or culture. On the contrary, many other languages have borrowed letters from Gieze alphabet. Therefore, if we continue to ignore Gieze, it will die in Ethiopia and rise somewhere else cause it is not a treasure to throw away or replace. Gieze alphabet is the most excellent and complete alphabet known to human civilization thus far. Gieze alphabet is truly far more superior to any other alphabet in the world.

The Ethiopic languages are written from left to right because unlike Hebrew and Arabic, which are written in scripts directly derived from Proto-Sinaitic, the Ethiopic languages are written in a script which borrows some Semitic character forms, but also draws on the alpha-syllabic scripts of the Indian subcontinent (with whom East Africa had a fair amount of contact), which are themselves written left to right.
@DJ_BGO
@DJ_BGO 6 жыл бұрын
is your statement that Geez "draws on the alpha syllabic scripts of the Indian subcontinent" based on any evidence or is it merely conjecture based on the fact there were trade-links between the two areas? Similarity to Brahmic scripts is not sufficient, and even if we grant the hypothesis that there was any sort of cross-influence, the direction is questionable. If anything, Ethiopia is known to predate India in terms of the presence of humans.
@infinite5795
@infinite5795 Жыл бұрын
@@DJ_BGO really? Your geez script was poor in vowels and was like Arabic abjad originally, vowels got added only when Ethiopian Axumite kingdom got Christianised by the Egyptian monks. The oldest Brahmi inscriptions belong to the 600-300BCE and had full vowels and consonants as a true abugida and is unique to South Asia and then South-east Asia.
@BF-bb5us
@BF-bb5us Жыл бұрын
@@infinite5795 firstly abugida is most certainly a term that is derived from Ge'ez and Ge'ez by far predates the Brahmi script, oldest Brahmi script is 250-232 BCE. Research does not support Brahmi influence and clearly shows it to be a separate innovation. Absolutely no evidence it was derived from there. Should also note the Brahmi language is descended from exactly the same source with Ge'ez clearly being older based on evidence.
@BF-bb5us
@BF-bb5us Жыл бұрын
That is false not only does Ge'ez predate those languages it is derived from exactly the same source so I have no idea where you got that from. Also Ge'ez is far more conservative. The script found in Eritrea bears a close resemblance found in Wadi el-hol. Linguistic reconstructions show Ethiosemitic languages have been spoken in the horn for 4,000 years. Research does not support Brahmi influence and clearly shows it to be a separate innovation.
