In today’s episode, we’ll be comparing some of the similarities between two Semitic languages, Amharic and Aramaic, with Betty (Amharic speaker) and Berta (Assyrian Neo-Aramaic speaker) challenging each other with a list of words and sentences.
Do you speak a Semitic language? If so, how much of the vocabulary were you able to understand?
Semitic languages that are most widely spoken today are Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Hebrew, Tigre, Aramaic, and Maltese. There are other Semitic languages with a smaller number of native speakers.
Amharic is the official working language of Ethiopia, an Afroasiatic language and one of the Ethiopian Semitic languages. It is spoken as a first language by the Amharas and as a lingua franca by most people in Ethiopia.
Neo-Aramaic consists of several languages which are varieties of Aramaic. Among these, the Northeastern Neo-Aramaic and Central Neo-Aramaic dialects are spoken primarily, but not exclusively, by ethnic Assyrians, who are native to Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Turkey. Assyrians are among the Christian minorities in the Middle East, being members of the Assyrian Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church (Eastern Rite Catholics), Syriac Orthodox Church, Ancient Church of the East, Assyrian Pentecostal Church and Assyrian Evangelical Church.

@@a.a210 Everything is from ancient Biblical Hebrew most of these words such as Cohen or Cohen Gadol the High Priests the Levites etc so Arabic was heavily influenced by Hebrew and Aramaic as well. The Arabic of the Quran is from Syriac Aramaic and that's where the Quran was most likely written up north. The word "quran" itself comes from the aramaic word "Queriyani" in Syriac and "Qara קָרָא" in Hebrew.

God bless Assyria and Ethiopia. We were very close in ancient times. We were both the first people to become Christian. Some of Jesus disciples were actually Ethiopian and wrote part of the New Testament but they did it in Aramaic.

Before that Assyrians accepted Christ in 33AD, 4 months after the crucifixion. Aramaic or Assyrian (surith) is the language Jesus spoke and they hold the original Lord’s Prayer.

62570 1483 From what I’ve researched and what she’s told Me, Habesha are the people who descend from, and identify with, a Ge’ez heritage irrespective of country or religion This includes the Tigrayit (Tigre), Tigrinya and Dahlak speakers of Eritrea It also includes the Tigrinya, Amharinya, Gurage, Harari , Argobba, Gafatgna, and a few other smaller speaking groups With that said, there is no need to be aggressive. I totally understand that there are non-Habeshas in both Eritrea and Ethiopia. I’ve used Habesha as short-hand since the only Eritreans and Ethiopians I’ve met have identified or presented themselves as such so it’s easy to generalize. That’s all No disrespect meant for the other groups in the two countries

Tigrinia is closer to Aramaic & Arabic as Amharic is influenced more by Nilotic and as such lost words such as ح، خ، ع which distinguishes Afro-Asiatic languages.

@@barnosho1611 I'm a Malayali atheist. Many Syrian Christians actually learn the language. Back in the days it was like Arabic for muslims. But now most Churches conduct the prayers in malayalam instead of syriac. Still many priests know to read syriac and people generally learn to sing some songs in syriac. But the pronunciation really sucks (even for the priests)

@@SY-bn3iz The difference is Amharic evolved into a more toned structure by incorporating the strong sound maker alphabets. Tigrignya remained with more of the original alphabets from Geez but still it also incorporated typical sound maker alphabets that produce the accent. And I don't know why most people overlook Guraginya, Harrari, and Argobinya languages as well. Those are rather more Afro Asiatic than both Amharic and Tigrignya in my opinion.

Were you thinking she is speaking Ancient Aramiac (the language of Jesus) ? Lol research a little-bit before you dive in to something. And Amharic was also developed around the same time in the empire of Abyssinia during 1270 A.D. It originally started as a language the courts, from then it spread out via conquest. Both of these language are recent languages. They are not Ancient !!

Heard all the Assyrian Aramaic even though I am TIGRIGNA , AMHARIC speaker(Ethiopia, Eritrea). But i think TIGRIGNA is even more closer to Assyrian Aramaic because it's closer in terms of accent and sound to GEEZ which make is much similar with ARABIC also.

@@lilpapi2785 If you mean that we are the same people as the Tigrayans of Ethiopia then you are correct. Ethiopia is a broad term. In Ethiopia, there are many different ethnicities (around 80 I think). But we Tigretes are exactly the same as the Tigrayans of Ethiopia. Our nearest brethren in Ethiopia according to genetics, culture, and language after the Tigrayans of course, are the Amhara people.

I am an Ethiopian speaking Amharic and one other Ethiopian Semitic language. I was able to correctly guess most of the Aramaic words given here. Thank you guys for this marvelous beginning of introducing to the world that Aramaic is related to Ethiopian Semitic languages.

MUJEMO ABRAHAM Aramaic by far. Also, the Hebrew letters are a form of Aramaic alphabet while the ancient hebrew letters were “proto-hebrew” alphabet which was a variation of the Phoenician one. (Although Aramaic alphabet too is a variation of Phoenician).

As an Arabic native, I discovered a very important thing to notice here. Apparently Arabic (Central Semitic) had a vowel shift regarding the last word (Life) (Khayootha) (Hayiwet). In both Amharic and Assyrian, the root maintained the (ou) sound, while Arabic has shifted to the (a) sound. Life in Arabic is (Hayaah) or (Hayaat). Probably it's been written hundreds of years ago in some phonology/languages book. But it was cool to discover from the video :D

The word Lob/لب is interesting because in Arabic it means 'core'. And it's often used to refer to the core of a fruit from where you'd extract seeds. The word for 'Heart' is 'Qalb/قلب' There's also 'Tamma' , the word the Assyrian girl mentioned. In Arabic you'd say 'Thammata' to say 'There is' while in Algerian Arabic we actually say 'Temma/Themma' to say 'There' or 'Over there'
