THANK YOU VERY MUCH. We have suffered from this problem of NO WATER coming out of the dispenser EVERY time we have changed the filter. We have spent money ordering new filters and waiting forever for them in vain. This video finally showed us the secret. When we simply pushed that small valve with a pencil, water flow gushed out, we reattached the filter, and BAM, all was well with the world. The GE customer service was a sad joke. They had no clue about this and gave ZERO practical advice after waiting over 30 minutes on hold. Thank you again for taking the time to post this. It was a HUGE help for our GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser problem. Really great job.

Thank you so much, it works for me, the water valve supply behind the fridge was a pain to close it, so I ended up closing the whole house water supply, make sure you have a big bucket( I used a 13 gallons trash can) to collect the water from the hoses and the pipe line comes fast, I left drain all the water I began with the installation. I cleaned all the dust inside the fridge components once I got the cover open. January 2023 and this was the best video. Thank you so much.

I had the same problem and you don't need a washer. The problem is a little rubber pieces plug the hole. Soak it in hot water and flush pushing the pin by hand to let the water flow blow lightly. Its a one way valve and don't blow high pressure. Thank you so much to give me the idea, it saved me a lot money. Its been very slow for over one yr and your video helped.

BEFORE you order a new valve or find a washer as the hack, try engaging the plunger multiple times and see if that helps the water flow. Try at least a couple cups of water to check the water flow. It turns out my plunger was a little stuck, and manually pushing down on it a couple times (requires some force, and water will spray out as shown in the video) fixed my water flow for the most part! Great instructional video though - very helpful in diagnosing the problem!!

Fantastic idea. After a few filter changes the ramps (on the filter) that push that little valve up, round off the point on the valve. We have had nothing but problems with our GE since we bought it. I have actually done the correct "fix" once. This time I was not going to spend a dime on this junk. The lid from a cool whip container seems to be a good thickness. I took a 1/2" hollow punch and made a nice hole in the middle of the lid. Then with a pair of scissors, I cut around the hole leaving just enough material to cover the tabs(ramps) that open that little valve. Perfect fix. 10 minutes time, and didn't spend a dime!

It worked! Thank you! I tried the hose washer, but it was too thick: 0.13" ~ 3.3mm: I could not twist in place the filter. Having read someone's idea of using Starbucks cups...I used red plastic cups, like those for parties...cut three bottoms off for flat pieces...made 3 "hose washer"-looking washers of approx. dimensions: 0.73" inner diam x 1.08" external diameter. These are the approx dimensions of the WMF filter cavity. The thickness of these was 0.07" or 1.8 mm approx - just the right fit! - half the thickness of the hose washer! Twisted the filter in, and done! Thank you for the idea, and thank you for your reader's suggestions: so appreciated!

Updated reply 4 years later. Thanks for the vid dawg! Had same problem following filter replacement, I simply shut the water off, released the pressure with my thumb and also from the door side while all pressure removed and installed the new filter again. Triggered the valve a few times without pressure and mines working good again without a washer. One thing to note, it appeared the new filter wasn't locking fully into place due to the new materials against the O-rings and I got a pop after using a small towel and turned it more. Why did I do this? I compared the locked position of the filter to the old one and noticed the new unit wasn't turning the same distance when locking into place even though it appeared to be fully locking. Removing that cover helps a lot! Thanks again! Hope these notes helps others.

To verify my problem, I disconnected both water lines that come from the refrigerator and then connected the water line from the wall directly to the refrigerator, bypassing the entire filter manifold assembly. Then the water pressure was great! I hooked everything back up and tried a washer, but still got only a small stream. So I ordered the new assembly, and it will be here tomorrow. Thank you so much!

Perfect. No more pipe hammering from the valve. I used the Milk lid Plastic. I cut using an exact-o knife. I shaved off the sides and was left with the flat circle. I shaved the circle so that it fit into the filter opening, then drilled out the inner to about 1/2 inch and shaved with the same knife so that the hole was just big enough to be stretch fitted onto the filter holder. It is basically a soft washer shape that helps to push on the plunger as shown in the video. Works great, I think that the plastic of the milk lid may be a little soft. So, time will tell if it is. Restored full pressure water operation. Thank you!

Grateful for the video. My issue was resolved (very slow water flow after replacing GE MWF filter with an MR8. Your discussion of the bladder trigger (3:37) prompted me to look closely at the trigger. Using a small dental pick with a brush end and poking around the trigger, I loosened a granule of sediment, causing the trigger to drop down to its full depth. After reinstalling the new filter, all worked just as it should.

THANK YOU so much for this vid!! I literally made ‘washers’ from 2 (1 wasn’t sufficient) plastic roofing nail caps, as we are an hour one way from a home improvement store. I cut them to fit around the top of filter w my husband’s box cutter. I slipped them inverted stacked in one another over the post nipple of the filter housing. I feel the filter is a bit stressed but I’m expecting to replace (permanent correct fix) the entire part anyway so not that worried. Thanks for the info. Seeing how the mechanics work helped me resolve my issue. Turned out to be the filter not being seated enough. I even bought a second filter and got a slow dribble of water. I used a plastic cup from Starbucks and cut out a washer the appropriate size - 22mmx15mm. You can trim it to fit and even cut a split to cut out the middle portion . Worked perfectly. Thanks for the tip as I was unsure how to proceed with this problem, which I have not had before.

You are a genius! Also thank you to all the amazing commenters. By reading thru them I gained all wonderful ideas. Using a scissors I cut a plastic washer from a plastic medication box using the measurement of 9/16 hole & 3/4 diameter as suggested. Didn't need to be a perfect circle as long it covered the pointers of the valve. And voila! It worked like a charm!

I have a slightly different model, where the filter has two raised ridges on the inlet valve, so I could not use the washer method. However, I found the replacement assembly online for under $40 and it took me less than an hour to replace the whole thing. The only difficult part was getting the mounting screws inside the refrigerator back in place - there's no room to get your hand up in there. Water pressure is back to normal again! Thanks so much! I would have probably spent 3x as much on a service call.

I had a GE under sink water filter that ran slow after replacing the filter cartridges. Your video showed me the valve issue on the manifold. It is a stupid design in that the valve is pushed by a small, pointed plastic piece that is sure to wear down after one or two operations. I ended up building back up the tip with "Bondic" UV cured epoxy. Worked great! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

YOU are AWESOME. Regular garden hose rubber gasket. Working perfect. Interesting I tried it with the new OEM GE filter and hose gasket and got no flow at all (probably operator error). Reinstalled the new Home Depot filter with the hose fitting and it works great. You continue to impress 7 years later. (11/16/2023). Thank you. I just used the hack as described in the video. Isolated the issue by putting the bypass plugin to see if the water flowed smoothly which it did, and then went to the hardware store to get a steel washer with a 9/16" hole and 3/4" diameter. Worked like a charm! Thank you so much, as this hack saves me a lot of $ from calling the repairman! I have a KitchenAid refrigerator model KRFC302EPA00 as an FYI.

This was the best DIY video I've ever seen. sshawn09 not only offers both temporary and permanent repair options, his clearly explains how to do each. Thanks for your help. (PS...I previously tried to get help via an 1-800 call to GE service but their rep was not only unhelpful, but also very unprofessional and outright rude.) BTW, this appears to be a highly common problem, so you'd think GE would have offered a recall or at least redesigned an obviously faulty system.

Yup, the asshats making these could easily offer filters with slightly higher bumps that press on those points, or a plastic washer. Instead you are supposed to tear your fridge apart and install an $80 hose & filter adapter.

I think eventially the plastic "point" that actuates the valve gets squished... so someday it just will fail. It needs to be metal.

I just tried your hack on my GE refrigerator model # GSS25GSHBCSS (only 2 1/2 years old), and it worked!!! Thank you!! The loud hammering sound was driving me crazy. I used a hose washer as I didn't want a metal one to rust. All the appliances in my house are GE, and all the same age. They definitely don't make appliances like they used to! My dryer has been serviced about 7 times (5 in the 1st year), you would think that they would have replaced it, but nope! Very disappointed in GE!

Very helpful video. After replacing the the manifold and tubes on my frig I pried the old one apart. There is an "O" ring on the other end of the pintle. It was dislodged and restricting the flow. Now that it has been sitting for several days in the correct position the "O" ring pops back in place on its own. I have photos if you're curious. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

Thanks for the hack, I found a plastic hose pipe washer worked well to give a bit longer life before the repair. Sadly in my crappy Monogram fridge the unit is hidden behind a light panel (+ it’s built-in). The repair itself looks pretty straightforward at least when the day finally arrives.

I found a plastic washer that fit and restored good flow with no leaks. In looking closely at the valve & filter, there is a small ramp on the filter that is intended to depress the valve release tab for water to flow. It seems the plastic valve release tab may either wear or chip, causing the ramp to then only partially open the valve. Using a washer in this case then essentially increases the height of the ramp and depresses the tab fully. Thanks for your hack demo! I also have ordered a new valve. BTW, our fridge went about 14 years before this happened.

Thank you, very much, for this video!!! I replaced my MWF filter in my refrigerator, and for some reason the water would not flow. After watching the first 2 1/2 minutes of your video, I realized that I had that plastic part to test the water flow. Once I put it in, the water started flowing immediately. THEN, while putting the filter back in, I recognized that I did not line up the arrow to the front before I started turning the filter to tighten it.
