Best video I have watched on a how to do it yourself. Im single, a woman, and a do it yourself. If you can have have a little patience to get through the video then you too will be able to get this contraption apart. I needed it off so I could tighten the bolt so mu washer would agitate instead of just holding the clothes in a drum of water. Thx to this dude I didnt have to give up and buy another washer. IDK if this guy reads his comments or not, but I super appreciate the posting and the detail of your video. Thx guy.

MANY thank yous! What a sweet person to take time to film and explain all this. My agitator with the fins on it - in between the agitator base AND the Fabric softener cup - I JUST want to clean it ... lol -- mine is dirty! From my son washing his clothes - he is in construction so - unidentified debris, sand, dirt and soap all gunked up . He doesn't live here anymore so I want to clean it - yes - can clean it with it in the machine but I want to put it in the sink..DUNNO if I can reach in that far or if I have enough strength to "squeeze" that thing to get it off - but now I know how - thank you again. Very kind of you!

I'm dealing with this issue now. I had my friend hold the agitator while I squeezed and no luck. It's nearly impossible to seperat the auger from the agitator by squeezing with your fingers , just not enough room. I'm going to be trying a big C-clamp and large channel locks tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted if I succeded.

You, my friend, just saved me a whole lot of hassle. Like you, I could not find anything about how to take this thing off until I came across your video, and my light bulb came on. Something additional I have to share with others that come across this situation; I was able to use a pair of pliers I have that is for taking off oil filters from car engines to help with this. I was having a really hard time getting enough leverage to turn that upper assembly, but with the pliers on there, it popped right off. Thanks again for sticky to your project and sharing your lessons learned.

MonkWxly When you say pliers, are you referring to something similar I had tried at the 6 minute 40 second part of the video? Those were some oil filter pliers I tried but couldn’t get it to budge.

Thank you, your video was helpful. However, I was able to get the auger off without the saw or the strap. As is mentioned in the service instructions (which should be in a bag tucked behind or underneath) there is that small hole near the bottom of auger/agitator. I took a somewhat sharp flat head screw driver and was able to drive it through the plastic inside that hole and then with moderate effort twist the auger off clockwise. The instructions were a little vague, indicating a recess or groove, but as seen in this video there is a specific hole for this seen at 5:11 - your video made all the difference to see that hole. This process was easier than straps and the part was not damaged other the small hole designed to be used for this.
@nra4him4 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. Due to another comment I did find the bag yesterday and just briefly tried to find where the instructions said to put a Phillips screwdriver and didn’t see it or feel it while installed. I didn’t try a flat head like you mentioned. May try to look at it in more detail at some point. Either way they could have made it much simpler and clearer to get the piece off.
@nra4him4 жыл бұрын
David I went back and looked at the 5:11 part of the video and see where the hole you were referring to is. The reason I didn’t find it last night is because it is in a slightly different spot than the picture on the service manual....which seems about right with this washer lol.

This was a life-saver (and clothing saver) for a home fix-it guy. Until I tracked this video down by including the specific washer model number, I was seeing guides that did not apply at all to this model. Once I saw your demonstration near the end of where and how to squeeze and rotate, I used a small bar clamp and cranked it tightly enough to squeeze the joint and then had the bar to serve as a handle for rotating the agitator. I now have a replacement base plate on order to solve a longstanding mystery of holes in our clothes caused by snagging on some rough spots that somehow appeared on the ends of the base fins. Thank you so much for walking me through your findings.

I used a common wider belt, that you wear with pants, to put under the agitator of my GE washer. Don't use a nice one u like. Pull very hard and quick and it came off. I'm very weak so I think most people could do this, as long as the agitator style is not bolted down. My GE Profile model was not bolted.

Mine was very similar, except, there was a tiny hole and no indentions to line up. I picked up one of the GE models for free today. The guy said it didn't drain. That shouldn't be a big issue as long as it's not a control board issue. I'm a Whirlpoolguy but it's going to fun to play with a GE. I learned to avoid LG and Samsung but maybe I'll like refurbishing GE's. Only time will tell. My ? is do these agitators work like the agitators in the old Direct Drive Whirlpool manufactured washers worked--Whirlpool called it Triple Action. The bottom half of the agitator went back and forth while the top half twisted CW and was stable when the bottom half was twisting CW or CCW (I can' remember which). Four little plastic pieces called DOGS provided the ratching effect. Really got the clothes moving around great. If this GE has a similar action it would be great. The Wash Plates in the newer machines are a joke. Thanks for taking the time to make your video. I'm not sure I even need to remove the agitator but it's great to know how if I do. Cheers, Neill

Omg you totally do not drill a hole. Say goodbye to having a washer that does not leak. @KA-wf6rg6 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the response. Yes I have the exact same model number as you. I am squeezing just above the raised lines, like you showed in the video. I'm wondering if I need to somehow get the tub on its side and come at it from a different angle, rather than trying to get it off by standing over it.
@nra4him6 жыл бұрын
Kris Akins you are supposed to squeeze on the actual raised lines. If it won’t budge you may have to do what I did lol. It was kind of fun busting out the reciprocating saw and it only cost me an extra like $20 or so for the other piece. Best of luck I know it’s frustrating. Not sure why it won’t release.

Hi, unfortunately no! I did have some confirmation recently though. I went to a local Best Buy and saw the exact same washing machine model. I tried opening the lid and seeing if I could take the agitator off as described in the video. It would not budge, just like mine. I'm thinking the author of the video was able to get it off easier because he had already taken the piece off and had a better angle. There has to be some sort of trick/tool needed to get this thing off. It's unfortunate that GE went through such lengths to make such an easy repair as difficult as possible. I guess they're all about the money, as is evidenced by their bad product and short warranty period.

this video is wrong. while he could easily squeeze the bottom of the agitator to remove it, he did it when it was already removed. You actually need to line up a tiny hole on the bottom with the little circle mark, then push a screwdriver gently thru and using the screwdriver as a lever and holding the drum turn it clockwise.. When the agitator is on the washer you cannot squeeze it. check out www.justanswer.com/appliance/ai1i7-remove-upper-agitator-gtw460asj4ww-washer.html
