GE Washer Not Filling - How to Troubleshoot

This is one test that you would perform if you are diagnosing a Ge or Hotpoint Top-load Washer that is not filling with water. You would want to perform this test if your washer is not filling with either hot or cold water at all.
The washer's pressure switch is how the washer knows how much water is in the wash tub.

We have a similar GE washer but it has green LEDs above the selector. Our issue from day one (purchased from Lowe's about 8 yrs. ago) is the water level is too low even on the Super large or Auto level setting. I ended up just pushing the clothes down BEFORE pressing the Start button. (This machine is NOT an HE model, and if you change any settings AFTER it's already began agitating, the unit drains all water and soap and starts over! So much for water saver! LOL) Last week I was repairing the unit and did an empty test load set on SMALL. The tub filled way higher than a Super Large load!! WTH?! I checked to make sure the knobs weren't on incorrectly... Yesterday I did a very large load of towels, clothes, etc...and selected SMALL; sure enough it filled MUCH higher than Super Large!!! 🤔 What would cause this odd behavior ??? Bueller? Bueller? 🤣🤣

Blow out the pressure switch hose, blow into the hose so the air enters the bottom of the tub. Don't blow into the switch itself. If it's still doing the same thing, replace the pressure switch. That's the piece the load size knob is connected too. Thanks for watching!

Nice! I had the problem where the tube was filled with crap and wouldn't turn the water fill off. I cleaned it out with some wire for the tube and compressed air for the air dome. It baffled me when this time it wouldn't fill or spin and only agitate and drain. I used this video to check the pressure switch continuity, then blew on the hose and all of a sudden, the continuity flip-flopped. The crud seemed to have been keeping pressure in the switch this time, so it thought it was full and either needed to drain or agitate. Great quick video!

Yep... I think this may be a majority of the problems for inadequate filling. First detach the tube from the pressure switch at the top and blow into it to see if it is clogged at the base of the washer. I use trimmer string from my Weed Eater to clear the tube if its clogged at the base. Clogging of the tube is more common with people who use Fabric Softener.

hey Bill...my washer fills but stops short of filling by a lot. Even though I have it set on the largest load setting it won't fill more than half way. Any suggestions? It has never filled to what I would call the full level. Seems like there is always clothes sticking out above the water. I have to add water by the bucket full and shove the clothes under the water. My next washer will be a Speed Queen. They fill to the top! I will try this with the pressure switch, but I have a feeling it's the HE messing with me. stupid water saver appliances!!!

I'm wondering if you replace the hose with a larger diameter because it'll take more pressure to activate that valve. That way I would assume that the water would fill up further

It's not only about something wrong with the washer. Policies put into place to use less water are actually causing this problem. Washing machines, and dishwashers for that matter, no longer fill up all the way. You have to wash your clothes or dishes twice in order to get them clean, which wastes more water in the end. Is there any way to override that?

Hi Bill, my GE hydowash will fill up sometimes to XL and sometimes not - I have to trick it by putting it on the rinse cycle and changing the wash size then back to the wash cycle and then it will fill to XL. Otherwise filling half way. Is it the pressure switch or just a bad washer.

I know this is a late reply, but I want to thank you for this trick! We have the same washer and just realized that it hasn't been filling properly (barely makes it 1/4 full before starting to wash) and your trick worked very well!! Makes me wonder how long we've been wearing half-a$$ed washed clothes!!

If your washer is a GE Hydrowave be sure to check your lid switch if your fill light is blinking and the machine is not filling. This machine will not run or fill without the lid down or if the lid switch is bad.

Thanks for advice. I noticed my hose to pressure hose to pressure switch was clogged and my washer wouldn't fill with water but machine would agitate so I blew into hose and cleaned it out. I put tube back on and turned on Yeah.. water started filling it up Thanks so much for your help. thought I would have to spend a chunk of money to fix.. thank god for people who will help without cost just out of goodness. Hi Bill my g.e washing machine works as u start d load after dey first cycle it throwing out dey water from below dey machine. When it need 2 full back up it just blinking dey rinse light. But if u used a bucket 2 full it it works until dey end

Interesting. Didn't help me as I have no equiptment like that. The water goes in....and you can hear it draining out....like the drain is stuck open. But for those with this skill set....it would be helpful.

Hi Bill, GE model GTWP1000MOWW. I just got it and it seems to fill to normal level at the wash cycle but it wont fill up enough during the rinse cycle and won't agitate. Ive already cleaned out the pressure hose. Any ideas on how to get more water on rinse cycle and agitation?? Thanks

Washer would not fill and at first test showed bad switch, washer would start if switch was held in Reset. Had dinner wondered where I would get a new switch and then though that I should also pull hose just in case and test again... BAM, switch checked ok, the hose on the tub side had a block changing pressure in hose and preventing cycle from starting. Thanks for your help, wife is happy ;)

Hello, thanks for all your info but I have the same/similar problem with my Kenmore #110.25852400. The circuit breaker tripped midway cycle then I put it back on,saw a few sparks by the water level- pressure switch, then the water wouldnt fill up; it has no noise and hose isn't clogged. I looked at the water inlet valve and it isn't clogged either plus I tapped it a bit but no water/power. *The spin cycle and drain WORKS fine but no power with the water fill up. Could you help me? Do you think the water level switch went preventing it to power or inlet, vice versa or? Fuse in machine or the timer part but don't think so? Help please...? Thankyou

My GE unit was overfilling...it did not know when to shut the water off and was flooding. Turned out the pressure line had debris in it blocking the airflow. Inserted a 20 gauge wire and cleared it out. Voila.....FIXED!!!

You should have said to measure the resistance between the terminals, not just get a beep from your meter. My meter indicated continuity by beeping but the resistance was too high at 30 Ohms, so the switch is bad. Also you should have said to check between terminals 15 and 7. Your video looks like you were checking between 15 and 16. So I would give your video a D.

Hi Bill, appreciate your videos. I also have a fill problem; Kenmore 80 series. Maybe coincidence, but this problem arose right after I replaced a leaking pump. I had the unit leaning back against the wall to access the pump. Did I crimp or otherwise disturb a wire, hose, etc..? Seems funny that a switch would suddenly become involved. Thanks.

+Surjeet Bhatia Its fixed now, apparently the mechanical relay inside the switch was causing problem, i just blew thru the pipe hole and apparently it got disengaged and started working fine.
