Jamus is spot on! I remember during my JC years we had this project work thing that was introduced by MOE to promote creative thinking. But it was so structured to the point that it kills any crazy/wills ideas we had. I was fortunate enough to be educated both in the American system and the Singapore system. The American system really promotes radical thinking and ideas. There’s much to improve on in the Singapore system.

There's always vision of what we want. But 'how' is being carried out is the point. Active learning approach was introduced years ago from the top. But not fully driven. How to drive this through, like u say, getting the ground teachers to work it out is the key. It's there already. Trying to do transistion, from quantity to quality. But not easy to get the experienced ones (who got successful report slips) to step out of comfort zone. Why do I have to change when my way of teaching worked? Right? Haiz. Definitely class room size gotta go smaller and quality teachers gotta be grown. (finland teachers carries masters degree-- it's a benchmark that that shows one's cognitive level and capacity to achieve this. Classroom management etc is another skill. But definitely I would like to have a teacher with depth) how many or how fast can we grow these? Are these teachers in making/training by the current MOE? At least 3-5yo of making and then another 5 years to show the results right? Hope that MOE is already doing this. If not, if Jamus really make this happen, it will probably see this in 10years (optimistically - thinking that the planning, restructuring, pedagogy and curriculum structure to be planned out in 1-2 years for all subjects) All have visions. All are looking ahead. But I'm looking at how to make it happen. If not it's a dreams. And daydreaming. I really do hope that someone can really do such a huge shift/move.

What you said is not too different from research industries... Sadly. There is something very toxic in research and research related industries that is linked to SG education system: If it has not been done before, why do? Obvious there is no value, else someone would have done it. If it has been done before, then why do it? We can never outdo the rest. We spoke about artificial intelligence as emerging market, it got thrown aside by the high bass. When it really appeared, we have little to no home grown to front it

It concerns me when you say that people on the inside think that it is impossible. This suggests one of the following: (a) they are not thinking hard enough, (b) they have not thought it through properly, (c) they refuse to explore these ideas raised for some reason, (d) they have thought it through and deem that such ideas are impossible, (e) they are too proud to hear the ground because they think they know it all. And the list goes on... All options are plausible but I think options (d) and (e) strike me as the most viable. The moment people start to have such attitudes, then they can no longer hear the ground.

@mobyservices50804 жыл бұрын
He is portraying a serious problem i see in our education system. i myself wasn't fond of the rigid answer-based teaching that stiffen creativity. In the end, you develop alot of students who are good at following orders but few that have the ability to stimulate problem-solving mentality for real-life problems hence, why we see so many Singaporeans in middle management but CEOs are all helm by foregners cause we lack the creativity we need to solve these real life issues.
@fedexperimental84174 жыл бұрын
You are right. It is a serious problem that Jamus is portraying but it seems that for many years, the government has chosen to stick with it as it is "tried, tested and proven". What the government has probably not recognised enough are the trade-offs that come with such an outcome driven Education system. As we move into the future, innovation and creativity are increasingly becoming more important in order to increase productivity in our economy. Gone are the days where producing people from the same mold will help drive our economy and maintain its course. It is no longer about maintaining the course, but rather, it is about steering into uncharted territory. To do so, Singapore needs innovative ideas and creative people. But how do you get such people? By importing them from overseas? (not a sustainable solution obviously) Or by fundamentally changing the course of our Education system? The latter solution is what this country needs to move towards.

Once a person was categorized to be not smart, that person is dumped together in a group. Furthermore, these categorization frequently occurred. Exactly. Asking questions is crucial to progress and sparking creativity. For many years I have never experienced that until I went to university and was taught by professors who were educated overseas. The current education system mostly trains us to be obedient robots who can reproduce but not innovate/devise new ideas. In secondary school, I was in one of the most "prestigious" schools in sg but I was always hushed whenever I tried to ask questions; we were basically told to be "sponges". Questions are blatantly discouraged in schools, and so called "critical thinking" as a humanities student was largely a robotic exercise. Indeed, schools and teachers dont seem to appreciate reasoning skills while math and sciences are highly celebrated. As a law student now, I look back and realize how much was lacking in my previous years of education, and it is only now I much better appreciate the importance of reasoning and questioning with credits to my law professors.

I mostly agree with what Jamus said but to be fair education is a long term investment. It’s not like you make changes then overnight you see the results. The education system has changed a lot recently to be more holistic, less exams, abolishing streaming etc. As well as the setting up of new universities and colleges like Yale-NUS, SUTD etc, But it will take at least another 20 years before changes and investments pay off and we start to see the results.

Exactly! It’s so pressurised! This year - pandemic - why is there a need for the NON graduating cohort to go through assessments and final year exams?! Why can they focus on helping the PSLE cohorts? Sacred cow like PSLE will never be eradicated so we have to help them, right? Kids honestly should enjoy childhood and follow their dreams but here it’s asked to score score score! How can you train creativity like that?! Why is PISA education ranking for Singapore more important than the happiness of the children?!
@kayoom96134 жыл бұрын
Well, I personally don't think that there will be any further significant changes to the education system. If the government decides to remove exams for non-graduating cohorts, the students will be severely underprepared for major exams when they graduate. Exams also ensure that students will be kept on their toes such that they will not take education for granted. It is ok to lessen the number of assessments but to completely remove it will only make things worse for everyone.

Common wisdom tells us that to succeed in the next phase of life, you must be good at your current stage. However, every transition from each stage of schooling seems to throw the wisdom attain from the previous stage out of the window. I find it difficult to believe that my 12 years in the education system has prepared me well for tertiary education. When others tell me that a degree is just a degree; that your degree is not the basis that employers mainly look at; that having good grades at university does not mean you will do well in the workforce... It really just makes me think, then, why do we work hard in a education system that will ultimately have little impact on career success?

Singapore is not resourceless, our greatest resource is our highly motivated and law abiding Singaporeans. When my lecturer spoke to me, she asked me: “Why didn't you follow the template?” I was in total disbelief as how could I fail English with properly written paragraphs, grammar, header, footer. I later followed the template, keeping the essence of my letter and passed. My overseas education conflicts with Singapore's and this is very worrisome because living abroad independently at 16 allowed me to see and live in a wider world and I can say that Singapore's approach towards education is limiting and not enabling everyone for success. Instead success is gauged by how much you tow the line. Deviation from the mainstream is penalised when it should be welcomed. Aside from model answers, there are many other shortcomings stemming from the education system. So many that I can conclude that it is headed by a group of snobbish dinosaurs. I can never forget nor forgive a primary school fill-in-the-blank question: I ___ the dog. The answer was “beat”. Such cruel attitude towards animals stem from an elitist mindset of “Us over them”. @@CringeBasedDuality Education is a process of learning and memorising is a way of internalising the information in one's mind. In the working world it's the same. We can't have our handphones and tablets with us all the time to search for knowledge or answers, moreover , it will lead to over-dependency which isn't good. As you might have known, the syllabus is such that some courses do not focus on memorising knowledge but comprehension and analysis to score points. There are more and more lessons on hands-on learning. Hence, I won't consider memorising as the key focus of the education system.

Workers Party Jamus Lim you are one heck of a politician. You should joined Workers Party earlier. A great speaker who speaks common sense are very rare today. PAP members dont speak as good as Workers Party Jamus Lim. True and factual. PAP strength is only in speech attacking and plenty of trash talkings in each elections. Fines $$$$$$$$, summons, jail terms for defammations against all oppositions parties in their way.

The education system has served us well for the last century, all thanks to overspending on external tuition and excessive hardwork to achieve good scholastic results at the expense of creativity and free thinking. It is no wonder why we are very good at solving problems and not good in creating innovations. We always tell us kids "stop dreaming" and the teacher is always right. Kudos to Jamus for bringing up our education system. Like our political system, it is all route learning and not challenging the status quo not only in education, politics, corporate cultures,etc. The only thing that we are not restricted is food culture..............hahahha.

I think teachers should be accorded more power and respect. Too many stories of parents piling blame and unnecessary pressure on teachers by pampering their children, resulting in a lot of elitist mindsets. Teaching once used to be a respectable profession at all levels...
@maureenkam92124 жыл бұрын
Parents vented their anger on teachers during PSLE result day. Yet, they did not put the blame on renowned learning centre like the Learning Lab. They blamed the teachers for giving too much homework yet they put their children through loads of tuition homework without complaints. What double standard these parents practised!

I am a teacher who has experienced this. During work review, if my students don't do well it is my fault for poor teaching. If my whole class does well, it is because they all have good tuition teachers outside. Guess what, so I left to become a tuition teacher.

@@Ng-nv9to it's the same concept of ppl blaming the gov when one is not doing well and when good things happened ppl says it's becos of alternative voice in the parliament. What the teachers have taught in class, if your child is attentive and ask questions when in doubt, do the homework and test would be good enough. Parents, please attend the parent teacher session, this would help you to understand your child's performance and your show up in school encourage your child. Be patient with your child, encourage your child if needed. Singapore education system has come a long way and it definitely can caters for all students learning ability. I will not agree with Jamus Lim. What he is stating has no basis, as education is merely a stepping stone. What sort of education system a person went through cannot be the main factor that contributes to a person performance in life.

I say this as a parent of four and a non-MOE, non PAP-related person. Yes the pressure is on, albeit unevenly, in the schools but I do not perceive it as coming mainly from the educational system. Jamus is right to question the predominant outcome focus of Singapore's Education system. For many years, emphasis has been placed on emerging top in standardized international assessments such as PISA and TIMSS. While these achievements have given Singapore a boost in its international standing in Education, however, have we ever given thought to whether such goal-driven focuses have diminished or even eroded the intrinsic purpose of Education itself? Has this led to an erosion of the joy of learning which has been advocated much in recent years? It is time to re-examine why we are learning in the first place. It is also time to have a rigorous debate about the fundamentals of learning. It is time to go back to the drawing board.

PAP should also consider reducing the syllabus to the teachers have time to teach at a slower pace to benefit all levels of children! Add more interesting projects for them to explore! What’s the point of squeezing so much to them?!

While it is refreshing to see some showmanship which is probably the result of his privileged upbringing in his deliveries, I have yet to see much constructive recommendations other than criticism and comments, like which part of our current education system is outdated and does not help his children's integrate into the changing world? But to be fair, he is a newby like some of the other candidates, PAP or opposition alike, let's see what he can come up with.

Uni is mostly theory-based, poly more practical hands-on. That's why always need experience for uni grad. Take doctor as example, they study more years before graduating because it includes practicum. Most uni courses don't have this so only a short 3-4 years. So as a fresh uni-grad with no experience, ask/expect lower starting salary with option to renegotiate after a year or so on the job. Take the helicopter view & swap roles: if you were the boss hiring, what would you want in an employee with no experience or knowledge of job scope & its processes in the company?
