Dr Chee was merely asking a question, an honest one, about whether or not the PAP is planning on raising the population up to 10 million. He did not pick up that number through random thoughts but rather, referred to an article where DPM Heng Swee Keat cited former chief planner Liu Thai Ker that Singapore should plan for 10 million people for it to remain sustainable in the long term. While it may not be an official plan of the government to do so, as Dr. Chee said HSK was toying with that idea and number especially having said that Singapore's population density is not excessive. Furthermore, the person he cited was not any Tom Dick or Harry. Hence I find it valid that Dr. Chee and the SDP actually raised this point to get some clarity from the PAP on its plans regarding population growth as such statements like those mentioned by HSK may have caused alarm to the hearts of the ordinary reader.

What I failed to understand is that Dr Vivian should explain and why we need 10 m or do not need 10 m and not be defensive. We have the right to know what the govt policy is. I find that many a time the ministers brushed aside questions which they find difficult to answer for whatever reasons. What do they fear? Don't have the knowledge? Don't have the skills to articulate or express themselves? Fear of rebuttals? Singaporeans have the right to know. Why don't u charge a flat 20% GST on those visiting the ladies of the night at Geylang brothels? Go and form a closer relationship with Indonesian President Jokovi. Even Israel is fearful of Indonesia and so is US as their school students can hack ur IT security system. Learn from him, who comes from a humble background on how he can manage a big country with over 270 million people made up of over 700 ethnic people with different cultures, background and religion now beginning to live a decent lives which put PAP to shame. There is no GST and no health charges. All are FOC. Children education are free with schoolbooks, uniforms shoes and educational necessities are provided free too. Indonesia under President Jokovi is corrupt free. Even his sons are doing business not depending on him for assistance. He even told the them not to have anything to do with Govt businesses or try to get any kind of favours. Here in Spore we got spouses of PAP holding top post in GLCs earning unashamely exorbitant salaries. President Jokovi is no General nor a President scholar, just an ordinary uni graduate but he does a better job than all the PAP MPs put together. The Gentleman in PrresdentJokovi is that he never intimidate or pulverise the oppositions. Don't get me wrong, I am not a PAP supporter but just a sound neutral Singaporean believing in facts and effectivve & incorruptible governance regardless who may be in power. So far I have seen nothing that is corrupt that this current government had turned out even with sweeping majority in parliament for the past 50+ years. i am not so sure the same can be said to the opposition party except Chiam so far. I have also yet to see any substantive worthy proposition from the opposition party that is worth voting for. Take housing as an example; you think SIngapore housing is expansive? Think again compared it to those comparable economy of the world, SIngapore has the most effective and affordable public housing it has to offer for local citizens Likewise regarding healthcare. As far as import of foreign workers its a double edge sword. With the minute population and reach in world market, Singapore cannot compete with just local work force and home grown business because of its size and the lack of natural resources. However, too much import will impact the livelihood of locals who are less competitive. So there is a balance of workforce to strive for in accordance to the kind of business nature that the world needs for growth. Singaporeans by and large needs to continue upgrading their skills to stay competitive which the current government hass been advocating and been providing support to aide the upgrading. I believe the government had heed the advice from the citizenry complaint after 2011 election as far as the rate of foreign imports are concerned. As far as CPF withdrawal is concerned, why would an early withdrawal proposed by the opposition will helpsolve financial issues? Instead of proposing earlier withdrawal, I would rather advice people to upgrade their skill and improve their earnings to boost their CPF contributions for a better retirement plan.

This massive influx of foreign workers from unskilled labourers to professionals has blown out of proportions. What is wrong with planning for the future? the 10m was brought up by Mr Lui, the master planner for modern Singapore and in the article, he specifically state it is for urban planning and for 2100 as he is worried about the land suppply as that is the constraint we are facing. Dr Chee did touch on them but was not given enough time to cover everything. Anyway Bala knows and mentioned some of them - luxury taxes, wealth taxes, estate duties (stopped for no reason), capital gains taxes. Not sure what is so controversial and unaffordable about social welfare proposals, its common fare in many other nations. Our annual cash surplus averaged 25 billion annually over 10 years. PAP withdrew 52bn from reserves, so that’s just 2 year’s worth of cash surplus. SDP proposal is a small fraction of this.

Read up on the pros and cons of social welfare if you're not sure. As you said, it's common fare in other nations and there are plenty of case studies that show how social welfare with little planning causes (1) over-dependence, (2) heavy tax systems etc. We do need social welfare handouts during a crisis, but not always in times of normalcy. It's not enough to argue for 'social welfare' just because 'it's common fare' without looking at the pros and cons. Again, SDP cannot even provide an estimation of the total bill of their proposal. How can you even claim that their proposal would be a 'small fraction'? The truth is you don't know, and I don't know. You cannot downplay the impact of their proposal on our taxes. After reading all the political parties' manifestos, it's clear that SDP is not as well prepared in how they plan to handle finances, compared to WP/PAP.

watched almost 2 hours of debate on CNA from the various political parties. A lot of people in the comment sections liked Jamus Lim (wp). But I think his policies are a bit too far left. He wants to raise minimum wage, but he doesn't describe how exactly he will do that. I think his policy will cripple SME's. The guy from PSP said that SME's account for 70%of employment. I think Dr. Chee (SDP) made a good proposal regarding decreasing unemployment. He said there are over 100,000 unemployed in SG right now. However, I'm not sure if it is because of covid 19. But if he is referring to employment even before covid 19 and not just cyclical unemployment, I think he was wise to propose a hold on allowing foreign workers to come in. I think Dr. Chee was very good and pointing out the problems but I didn't agree with him on every solution. They men debating had one thing in common, they agreed to lower rent, I'm not sure if was only for businesses or homes as well. But I think the lowering of rent was a very good idea for businesses. Dr. Chee and guy from PSP kept talking about social benefits for the elderly, while it sounds good, I'm not sure if that could work soon, maybe in the distant future. Because, small businesses are already facing a hard time and the extra money in the economy through elderly welfare may cause inflation rather than stimulation in my opinion, because the elderly may start demanding more than the actual supply, since businesses are relatively slow now. So I'm not exactly sure which candidate is best, but I don't like Jamus Lim's proposal of and increase in wages, at least, not now. I agree with Dr. Chee that less foriegn workers should come in and that money should be granted to unemployed people who qualify to start their own company. I also agree that the weaker schools should get more funding. The guy from PAP mentioned many solutions without any real conclusion as to which scheme he prefers. Dr. Chee said that PAP raised taxes on various items, I also dont think that was a wise idea. But the guy from PAP said that last year was the only year SG GDP was negative in 10 years. I am not sure if it because of the basic laws of the economic cycle, of this was artificial due to the polices of PAP. I would have to do more research. So far, I don't like Worker Party much because I think some of their policies are too far left. I also think PAP has been leaning left recently based on the errors called out Dr. Chee. The who spoke from PSP was very laid back imo, but some of his solutions were very practical. I think Dr. Chee did a good debate but at the end he was accused of lying of a statement made by PAP, about PAP wanting to increase SG to 10 mill people. Again, I hope Singaporeans vote correctly.
