Today (NZ time) my son changed the reduction gearbox oil in my newly acquired 2018 28kWh Ioniq Electric, at 81,000 km. We followed your guidance, and the job went very well. The oil was black and certainly needed changing! I got the magnetic sump plugs from our local Toyota dealership, and I got the 70W gear oil from Hyundai. Many thanks for providing the video - and all of your other Ioniq Electric videos.

Really really helpful guide and tips Matt - I’m going to change the oil in my Ioniq gearbox this weekend so this video has been super useful. For anyone looking to do this I found a Toyota Specialist selling the OEM Toyota plug Matt used for £8.34, they are called Rough Trax and are based in Bristol. Their service was great and plugs arrived really quickly. Never foresaw changing oil in an EV 😂 but I think this is excellent preventative maintenance for any Ioniq/Kona/Niro owner 😊

Regarding the comments about ferrous particles and magnets, (a) all gearboxes with steel gears use a magnet (either fixed or on the plug) to retain normal wear particles, it's an essential feature that few powertrain engineers miss; (b) once wear particles pass very close to the magnet (just by chance) and are captured, they don't come off due to the turbulence of the oil. Certainly they aren't just 'collecting' there when the car is parked. (c) Hyundai's round factory magnet is captured loosely in a pocket in the casting and rattles around (a design mistake that started with the Ioniq and continues with the Kona and original Niro, but in the Soul it's square) and as a result of movement under the oil flow rubs those captured particles against the aluminium creating much smaller steel and aluminium particles. Steel particles that are "worked" this way lose their magnetic attraction and go back into the oil. At the same time, aluminium particles rubbed off the housing make the oil black. (d) regarding the magnetic plugs I'm glad you used the Toyota and you're the first to do so, it's a good choice. However I would not suggest that Ioniq owners just go out and buy any 18mm magnetic plug, especially the aluminium-body type. The difference between an engine and a gearbox is that you cannot afford to have the magnet fall out in a gearbox. The reason why I originally picked the Votex DP007 in Nov 2020 was so that myself and other Kona owners could "vet" (validate) the quality of that part, which has since played out favourably. It's true that Nissan plug magnets poke out into the gear oil but I would not advise others to use a longer plug than the Votex or Toyota (in that 35mm clearance) without long term testing. There could be ramifications that are not immediately obvious. (e) regarding oil quality, type and gears, there is nothing wrong with the design of this gearbox. It is designed for the motor RPM and that's why the oil is thin. The only problem is the loose magnet. What you want to do is change the oil once at under 500 miles then again at around 3,000 miles. Adding a magnetic plug is helpful but doesn't completely solve the problem because some particles will still find and be 'ground down' to dust by the spinning factory magnet. But after those 2 initial oil changes the majority of the problem has been addressed as the break-in particle loading has been removed. Further changes could be around every 30,000 miles but the purpose is to clear out fine particles rather than replace worn oil. Hope that's all helpful. Two of my videos might back some of this up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opWlf3d9l8-Kp8U and kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6LYio2GidCWo6s

All EVs have a single speed gearbox like this, which is also a differential. I think Porsche has or was working on a 2-speed gearbox for their EVs. No, the oil change is not part of a dealers service. All manufacturers (apart from the Mitsubishi i-MiEV) claim the gearbox is sealed for life and no oil changes are required or include it in the service schedule. You might find this recent video interesting too kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZSTmGB5oqt7m5I, where I look at a reduction gearbox.

Thanks Matt for a another informative video. We’ve had a Kia e-Niro from new in March 2019, now on 73,000 km (we live in France)..The Niro and the Ioniq are built on the same platform, though the motors and battery sizes are different of course. I was wondering about changing the reduction gear oil at some point but as you explain below in the comments it isn’t something the dealer would do in the servicing schedule. With Kia warranty being 7 years I’m in a bit of a bind on what to do...not wanting to invalidate the warranty but wanting this car to be a long termer. Any thoughts?
@GoGreenAutos2 жыл бұрын
Many worry about warranties. Getting it done by a garage will resolve this. But anyway, no garage would be able to tell its been changed, if you keep the original plugs. Leaving it until it's 7+ years old would be unwise in my opinion. With warranties, let's say you change your own cabin filter...and then the gearbox failed. They wouldn't reject the warranty claim because the cabin filter wasn't changed by them. They would have to prove that the different cabin filter had a knock on effect and caused the gearbox failure, which of course is impossible! Replacing the gearbox oil, if done correctly and with the correct oil grade, is only benefiting the vehicle and prolonging its life.

50k oil changes and ideally add a magnetic drain plug. You could do it at 40K, but I really can't see any benefit doing it any earlier if using a good oil. As for driving, just don't floor it from standstill as the torque can put stress on the diff and gearsets. I've done two videos on the Ioniq reduction gearbox so you can see inside. Everyone says how the “EV” motor is directly coupled (via reduction ratio) through the gearbox to drive shafts, i.e no clutch or torque converter etc…. do you know how “neutral” works on transmission selector ..?
@GoGreenAutos2 жыл бұрын
While most EVs do have neutral on the gear selector, it's not the same as neutral on a traditional ICE vehicle. The neutral on an EV is not changing anything in the gearbox or disconnecting the wheels from the motor. But instead it's just disconnecting the motor from the rest of the powertrain electronics. It's just just an electrical switch as it were.

@patrickh73682 жыл бұрын
@@GoGreenAutos not sure I understand that, do you mean an electromagnetic clutch ?
@GoGreenAutos2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickh7368 Not as advanced as that. As far as I know, 'neutral' just turns off the motor controller or something like that. The motor still spins, as does the reduction gearbox. Its just not interacting with the rest of the powertrain (i.e. inverter etc) so you have no regen function either. Its probably just a tiny little relay on a circuit board.
