You may think it’s unfair that the Supra had performance brake pads and the Z had stock ones, however it should be noted that pro-level drivers like Jackie Ding have tracked the Supra on bone-stock pads without brake failure. We hoped that would be the case for the Z as well, but Coby found out otherwise.

The brake issue with the Z is really, REALLY disappointing. The 370Z had the EXACT same issue with pads failing, get this 15 years ago, those are the same brakes. No improvement on these brakes on what is being sold as a performance car is unacceptable. Nissan should be putting brakes on the car from the factory that can handle at least a few hot laps. That extra $50 per car is not going to turn anybody away from buying it.
@iamstd218 күн бұрын
I think the main issue is that Nissan as a whole has been going through a lot lately (CEO issues, etc) and they didn't have enough resources or funding for better R&D. It very much seems like a car with compromise, like they did what they could with what they had. As much as it seems like they could've "just" put better brakes on it, there's a lot more that goes into it as an OEM.
@Abercrombemonkey17 күн бұрын
It might be upsetting if you found out they're built using the same 370z chassis from 2010 , Nissan also released the same sports car GTR from 2009 all the way until 2025, the same 6 speed DCT transmission says it all.

The problem is that the stock rotors don’t have much heat capacity. They brake fade very easily. You need a set of high temperature brake sets to do the track.

Its basically a 370z with a new shell and powertrain. Personally I can understand re using old parts that are good, but those akebono brakes were already and issue over a decade ago. It just seems like the teams at nissan weren't very aligned with what the car is supposed to be. Marketing touts it as a dedicated sports car, but the actual tuning and set up of the car is more comfort grand tourer.

That’s because the 370Z and the new Z are the exact same car. The only difference is the new Z has the optional 9 speed (which is really really good in the Nismo but bootycheeks in the regular Z’s) and it has the twin turbo V6 pulled from the Q50/Q60. But both cars share the same chassis code, and a lot of the parts on a 370Z, both stock and aftermarket will fit on the new Z cause like I said before, they’re the same car. Unfortunately because they’re the same car, and share the same strengths, they also have the same exact weaknesses

That would atleast get you through a few laps... - This is why the Z should really be priced $10,000 less - because you have to go out - get coilovers/alignment/tires/brake upgrades/tires - Those bridgestones are absolutely garbage. My 370z has the Z1 2-piece rotors, ebc redstuff, ss lines, motul fluid.... BARELY good for just fun street / canyon / mt runs.... I cannot imagine how bad it would be on the track - would have to go with air cooling ducts and a rotor destroying pad just to get by...
@r6scrubs12610 күн бұрын
@@07wrxtr1so if you replaced pretty much every braking component what is it you think that is still bad?
@07wrxtr110 күн бұрын
@@r6scrubs126 I'd say you have to be onboard with running a track pad - not a pad that proclaims it can do both street AND track duty. That pad will eat up your rotors - so you have to be onboard with the cost of replacements. You also have to be onboard with inspection/maint of the Akebonos - things like seals can go bad - and fluid changes/bleeding. Most of the auto-x 370z guys utilize some kind of brake ducts ontop of that. The best 2-piece rotors are not from Z1 - those just happen to be the most affordable - so there's the whole debate on just going aggressive pads and cheaper rotors - with the plan of simply replacing them more often > trying to go for the more expensive 2-piece options. Obviously the track, driving style, etc will make a big difference - While the Akebonos are the best brakes I have used on any car - I would consider them the bare minimum for canyon carving/heavy street use - My only complaint was going through stock rotors often - this is what made me compromise with EBC Redstuff/Z1 2-piece as a step up - but there are times where even on longer stretches of mt roads - you're going to experience the limits of that setup. Hope that helps - I'd encourage you to look more on the Z forums and see what some of the Auto-x guys run - Some run budget setups with aggressive pads / cheap rotors / motul - some do something inbetween - and then some go the high budget route with dedicated aftermarket $$$$$ brake packages... I think it depends really on budget, expectations, and duration. I can say easily - you don't want to run stock pads/rotors/fluid = that will put you in "Uh OH" mode quickly...it's a similiar situation with the whole oil cooling issue - any aftermarket oil cooler is a clear upgrade over stock.

Great video and nice driving by Coby! Non-NISMO Zs have always been grand tourers if you look back at the history of the model. I think a lot of folks end up feeling disappointed at the new Z's on-track performance because in the modern era everything that looks fast and has power is expected to be a track weapon, regardless of whether that's the goal of the manufacturer. In the case of the new Z, the NISMO model is the track oriented version. The Sport and Performance trims are designed for the road and the softer suspension and not-very-grippy tires are appropriate for that goal. Speaking of tires, the stock Z Performance tires are holding it back quite a bit as well compared to what the Supra comes with. Hopefully some time Coby gets to drive a NISMO on track (which also has bigger brakes by the way! And an oil cooler).

I ditched those UNSAFE bridgestone tires after only 5000 miles on my Z. A set of prius tires from 2006 are better!! Seriously the worst tires I have ever owned on any car - worse than the old 4 for $59 specials back in the 90's!! Just cut down "it's for our shareholders bro!!" edition. Nissan should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves for continuing to take CUT DOWN tires and push them for OEM use. Now here's where it gets fun: You can go buy the SAME TIRE from tire-rack - and it will have more tread. Turns out Bridgestone supplies the ultra shit version with the same model number to nissan so the corporate losers can enjoy a few extra pennies per share ROI - cuz - gotta feed the coke addiction. At a minimum - every Z comparison should run nothing less than a basic ps4s...as the majority of Z owners get rid of those ghetto trash bridgestones within a year of ownership if they actually drive the thing!

There is no such thing as a 400Z. It is a Nissan Z. 😅

Previous generations of the z struggle with brake fade as well. Not enough air flow over the rotors to keep them cool.

I had a 1999 Porsche 911 C2 Cabriolet with the 6 speed that had brakes you couldn't get to fade with 300 whp, for PDE's or backroads driving. Superb Brembos. Bone stock pads and fluid. In a car that weighed 3015lbs wet, it was fast enough to have fun and would certainly give the 400Z all it could handle for lap times if the Nissan's brakes actually worked. The 400Z being 25 years newer and still having garbage brakes is just unacceptable.

Just FYI, the camber plates and half cage alone would make the car significantly quicker. we just put a rollcage in one, added 80kg and it made it 2.5 seconds quicker on a 2 minute lap. swaybars and coilovers made the biggest difference obviously with about 12 seconds gained. I found the supra undrivable with stock swaybars and suspension. it felt like i was driving a lifted comp truck.

Loving this series It would be cool to get to a certain point where we can go H2H some fav cars revisit them... maybe even suggest to the owners some mods what you would do and have them come back... and yeah guess that would require people spending money they might not have, and lending their car out again. And it would be really cool to see Coby drive some faster street cars (was it a 911 GT3 last episode that kept getting in the way?) just to see where something like that will stand compared to say the civic supra etc etc - granted that would require people lending you their super expensive cars.

Wild to talk about the better brake pads on the supra and then say "yEaH, bUt tHeY dOnT OvErHeaT oN StoCk PaDs EitHeR." Like, okay? but you still had upgraded pads on only one car?

@DkBu-zy6ui15 күн бұрын
@@adccars359 oh i think with some nice coilovers, some adjustable arms for a proper alignment and a BBK upgrade it would slaughter the supra. ill also take the vr30ddtt long term over the b58 any day. both great engines, but nissan wins for longevity over bmw every single time.

Oh yeah just rebuild the car for another 15k and it should be great. What a piece of junk.
@DyerCars14 күн бұрын
@@adccars359 the Z most definitely does not have 65 more horsepower, look up dyno numbers, 2024 Z makes 360 whp, 2024 mk5 dynos around 376 wheel horsepower

Which is what z's are.
@jaedonhaskins991717 күн бұрын
It's disappointing that the Z has sub-par brake pads, but honestly, who tracks a car without installing proper pads? I've never tracked a car with stock tires, brakes, or fluids. Never assume that your car is safe and track ready, if you're not the one that prepped it.
