Exactly. I've unfollowed other accounts for only building massive collections for themselves. There is a difference in buying cars for content and buying all the cars you wanted as a kid because people watch your videos. Agreed. You can see the stock brakes already were powerful enough to lock up the tires (the ABS actuation that is visible). I think tit was all the tires and the bigger brake kit will improve thermals and brake feel on spirited driving and trackdays.

It was 100% the tires, the only variable that changed in this test that affects braking distance is the coefficient of friction between the car and the road.

I came to the comments to write the same thing. Especially the parts about thermal loading of larger calipers and rotors for hard street and track use. Those performance tires are not only better for handling, but are universally regarded as the cheapest “mod” one can do to improve driving performance in a car. Handling, stopping, and wet weather performance are all increased with better rubber alone.

quite sure that the shorter stopping distance is purely due to the tyres and not the brakes. it's been proven that bigger brakes do not help you stop faster. it simply reduces brake fade when everything is super hot during track days. that being said, those brakes look gooooooood!!!

When it comes to a single stopping/slowing event, only tire compound and vehicle weight effect stopping distance. Now, if you want to stop/slow back to back to back, like a race car on a race track, upgrading calipers, rotors, pads, and brake fluids, will prevent brake fade by allowing the system to better shed heat. Calipers, rotors, pads, and brake fluids do not shorten stopping distance.

Just a tip for next time, most Subaru rotors have little holes in them that you can thread a bolt into to push them off the hub so you don't have to hit them. A radiator stay bolt threads in perfectly. Great video!

I love the upgrades. I wish that you had tested the difference with just the tire too. And be careful when temps are below 50F on those summer tires as they don't like colder temps. You might want to use the DWS 06+ tires for the winter months as they will grip better in the colder temps. And I like the sleeper/stock look so I hope you aren't going to go too crazy with the visual mods. I've done a lot of work to my 2009 Corolla S Turbo 5MT but I like the sleeper look. No need to belt the rear-brake disc to get it off. Rotate the disc so that the drum-brake adjustment hole is at the bottom-dead-centre, pop out the little rubber grommit, and with a flat-bade screw-driver (keep count), rotate the adjuster so it clicks loose on the drum disc. They slide right off. Rotate the adjuster the opposite way on the other side of the car to release it (they dont release each side by the same rotational direction, pain in the backside...but it is what it is). When you put the new discs on, make sure to adjust that drum brake adjuster tight again so that it spins with a tiny bit of resistence...then then back it off another 1-2 clicks so it runs free. Hitting them with a hammer - totally unnecesarry, can damage your wheel bearings.

@@thenerdycanadian7172 this! Caliper bolts themselves onto the hub should remain DRY or thread locked. He may be thinking of slide pins on non-Brembo style brakes which even then, don't use anti-seize. Use brake lube.
@yanni1398
@yanni1398 Жыл бұрын
@@thenerdycanadian7172 I personally don't like copper since, in my experience, it reacts and gets "sticky." I understand that anti-seize on the caliper bolts affects the torque value and is "considered" a no-no, but I care far more about corrosion and damaging the aluminum threads. Blue thread locker will keep the elements out only where it's in contact, but the Brembo caliper bolts already have lock washers. The anti-seize can be rubbed on the whole bolt, making it corrosion-resistant everywhere, and it only increases the torque value by about what 20%? That's still far less than what Subaru over-torques theirs to, and I like the uniformity of the torque that anti-seize provides. It saves me a headache, and imo a little extra torque won't break anything. I had to get new bolts because mine were stretched from factory, I haven't had problems since I've installed it the way I've mentioned and when replacing rotors checked the bolts just for fun 0 stretch :) If they didn't have a lock washer, yes I'd use loctite.

After you got some temperature in the brakes, the tires started to shine! Nonethenless, you can not expect that on a regular street drive, your brakes will always be up to temp after a few hard stops.

Hey, as an FYI... You're supposed to use the caliper bolts (I believe caliper bolts; it's one of the brake component bolts) and thread them into the threaded holes in the rotors to pop them loose from the hubs. Pretty sure that's the case on these Subarus.

Just looked at a photo. Confirmed. The threads in the rotors are to pop them free after they get rusted to the hubs. So, find the bolt (from the brake system) that fits and just screw it in little by little on each side until they pop.

Dont do this on the rear, without first adjusting the drum brakes with the adjuster (behind little rubber gromit cover on the face of the disc - rotate to bottom-dead-centre). Use a small flat-blade screw-driver. If you try to force the rear discs off without disengaging the drums, you will damage stuff back there.

@@charliemoz yes, but that's the same if you try to bang them off with a mallet or hammer as well.

@@isaaclarson They will come off substantially easier if you back the adjuster off first.

@@charliemoz I'm not disagreeing. I'm saying you'd have to do that regardless of the method used to break the rotors free.

For those who want to upgrade to the 6 pots on your Subaru. They'll fit the WRX/STI 08-21 as well, you'll need to get the bolts for the calipers as they have a different thread pitch and trim the dust shield or buy the right dust shield.
