Mechanical engineer who works for a tool company that makes torque wrenches: Supporting the drive side of the torque wrench with your left hand while applying force with your right will have the torque spec be off +/- 15% or more! I didn't believe it until a technician let me try it out on our certified testing equipment. I grew up in a mechanic shop and ALWAYS see people use a torque wrench with two hands like that, but nope! Force should only be on the handle side! Hope someone finds this info useful.

I have no idea what short stroke and compression is all about but I find it all fascinating, great video.
@Talynen2 жыл бұрын
Stroke is how far up and down the piston moves in the cylinder every time the crankshaft rotates. The shorter the stroke, the less acceleration (force) the piston is subjected to when spinning at the same revolutions per minute (RPM). Reducing the stroke makes it possible to rev the engine higher if it was previously limited by how much force the pistons, rods, or crankshaft could withstand. Long stroke engines are good at making torque, but you can't rev them as high as short stroke engines if they are otherwise identical. Compression is about the difference between the maximum and minimum volume the air inside the cylinder. When the piston is all the way up at the top of its motion, it takes up a lot more space inside the cylinder. This pushes all the air into a smaller space at the top of the cylinder near the spark plug. Compression ratio is about how much smaller this compressed space is compared to the large space created when the piston is at the bottom of its motion, as far away from the spark plug as possible. The more aggressively the air is compressed, the smaller of a space it has to expand once ignited. The same explosion of air and fuel happening in a smaller space means that more pressure is created. This pressure pushes on the piston, which turns the engine and creates torque. More pressure = more torque, and more torque = more power, because power is the sum of all the torque the engine generates over a given period of time.

@@ksm1985 If you want an example of a short-stroke, high-compression engine, take a look at the V10 and V8 engines from Formula 1. I'm not sure if the current engines (or "power unit" as they're called) are still high-compression since they use a turbo.

As an NC Miata owner considering ITBs for my car, it's been interesting seeing how differently ITBs look in Hondas and Miatas. ITBs on a K-motor tend to be very short and VERY large diameter, because you guys have crazy airflow and revs to play with. For Miatas, ITBs end up being MUCH longer and skinnier. With our relatively ordinary MZR/Duratec engine, we need more focus on a strong midrange since there's no VTEC to save the low or create a crazy high. I believe the main NC ITB kit also uses some slightly staggered-length runners. It creates a remarkably wide torque curve, with effectively peak torque starting at 4k.

Floating valves: a phenomena where valves aren’t compressed back into closed state by the spring in time for the next engine cycle, meaning the seal isn’t created fast enough due to high RPM. A stronger spring will compress the valve back into closed state faster, allowing for higher RPM.
