Thanks for sharing Dave. I just replaced the strings on my 2013 American P Bass and due to the season change, I had to adjust the truss rod and reset the string height. When I adjusted the string height, I noticed my E string had bottomed out on the deck. Everything's in spec now, but after watching your video, I know what to do if I have to go into more adjustment. Again, thanks so much for your videos...you're a lifesaver!!!!

Thanks for another journey through the shop... I have fixed up my fair share of guitars too.... Sorry Dave, but I bought a NEW Rickenbacker bass... and it's my favorite to play. I will validate your observations though, and state that RIC has made changes to their guitars to remedy some of the things you've mentioned in the past. Current models have ample output from the pickups, necks can be adjusted with just turning the rods... etc.. stuff that wasn't true 20+ years ago.

I bought a Geddy Lee MIJ Jazz Bass a few years ago and had to sell it. Geddy Lee specs his Jazz basses to have a thin profile neck. On my bass, I had to make frequent adjustments, the string height would change every few weeks. Was it the Newfoundland weather? Your comment about green wood hit the nail on the head. The stock pickups sounded great, but the bridge pickup was noisy, the buzzing! It picked up electronic noise at loud volumes and it was too annoying. You couldn't record with it.- Probably a shielding issue? I guess the owner of this one had the same problem, DiMarzios would be an improvement. Anyhoo, too frustrating for me as a keeper, I had to sell it. Maybe the American Geddy Lee Jazz basses are better. Great videos Dave, I really appreciate your wisdom-keep it up!

I love my black nylon tapewounds on my Fender bass. Like the XL's and the Black Beauties DR. They last longer Than Most strings too. And the ernie ballsack guitar polish in the spray bottle applied with a microfibre cloth (you get one free when you buy it) is my fav for keeping a guitar looking spick and span, it stops corrosion too if you apply it regularly enough. but my best secret to keeping a guitar clean(er) for longer is washing my hands with Bactol (it's an alcohol based waterless and self drying hand wash gel) stops you're guitar getting gummed up with all your human slime after you''ve just had lunch and makes your strings last longer too without all the corrosive sweat and body oils they would usually get when you come home from a hard day's work and start jamming.

Dis-similar metal corrosion is a real pain. I used to work in the aircraft industry where they commonly fought dis-similar metal corrosion with advanced primers. But one quick fix for non primed parts was a coating of weak threadlock. Hell if it works for a CH-47 Chinook it aught to work for a bass.

Hiya Dave, loved this video, not because it was long but because you really covered so much about setting up a bass. Plus some of the crazy repairs you come across. Like the tuning head buzz and the tiny shim. Amazing that tiny shim could make that much difference. Kind of a stupid question here if you have an answer... Instead of the shim, could you have planed the mounting area of the neck just a tiny bit on one end or is the shim the best way to go? Thanks Dave. Your Pal, Buddy
@keithdavis26018 жыл бұрын
+Buddy Martin- If you remember the problem was he was trying to decrease the string height- He couldn't lower the bridge adjustment anymore to compensate(he bottomed out on the bridge frame). If he planed it he would be making the string even higher. He had to raise the necks butt to lower the string height. I've got the same problem on a telecaster of mine. I think Dave would agree with me on this if he reads this.

Great video Dave, I also own one of these turkeys. When set up properly as you are doing it"s a good bass unfortunately when you buy one you are at the mercy of some idiot who does not know what they are doing example being the bridge mine had the wrong string spacing so the E and G were out of whack and not being picked up by the pickups. I had to get new saddles for mine which I could only get from the USA at a premium then set up myself now it plays as it should. If I were Geddy Lee I would not be a happy camper and would dissociate my name on the Japanese ones as quality varies from one to another. Keep up the good work youtube would be boring without you. All the best Dave from Scotland.

Awesome as usual! Can I make a request? How do you correct a guitar that has extensive wear and pitting from strings at the lower cowboy chord frets and essentially zero wear above the 7th fret? The wear, pits, dents, whatever are as deep as about 1/4th the total height of the frets. Would you level all the frets down to the height lowest pit?
@budgetguitarist8 жыл бұрын
+RockYouVideos I'm not Dave. But it would depend on the person playing the guitar and how low they're willing to have the frets, right? You might take the fret with the worst dents and file it down until they're gone, and then see if that's too low. If you go by specs, you could then measure it. Assuming these are medium-jumbos, anything under .035" is too low, but if it's at least .041" then no problem IMHO.

Dave i have to agree to disagree with ya on one thing, you should cut your strings about 3 inches past the post that is about 3 winds around the tuning key, cause if you give it to many winds around the pole number one it looks sloppy and number two the bass could go out of tune because it feels like the string is stretching out forever. like yourself i have been setting up and changing strings since i was 7 and that is almost 50 years ago. i love your videos and your attitude, you are very good at what you do and we all have our reasons for doing things the way we do...take care buddy !!

Got a question for ya Dave. What do you think the maximum I should pay for a fret dressing on a bass is, and what would be the maximum for a fret replacement? I bought a bass on Kijiji (Washburn Tauras T24) a couple months ago just after my birthday) for $300, it's neck thru, in absolutely gorgeous condition and has very miniscule fretware. The thing sounds GORGEOUS, better sounding than many high end Fenders and Rickenbackers that I've heard. I'm using it for gigging and basically using it every day for practice now, so I suspect in about a year and a half to two years from now I'll need a fret dressing. Long & McQuade costs almost $300 after tax for fret dressings, and almost $650 after tax for fret replacements. Both of those prices sound crazy to me, but I just want to know your opinion. Thanks!

Thanks for the video, useful as always. I only came across this video now. I bought a '98 Geddy Lee like this one last Sunday. Yesterday I did the set up myself, for the same reason shown in this video and bumped into the same problem. I am not a Luthier and just learned about the shim veneer woods under the neck from your video. Too late... I filed the saddles as a last resort of the incompetent. It worked, no complaints . What would Dave say about that? I agree with you that this bridge sucks, and would be happy to replace it, so I did not care too much about damaging it. would you have any suggestions for a replacement? I looked up the shims online and found at www.stewmac.com but the shipping cost to London UK is expensive. Any ideas of a supplier in Europe? Again, many thanks!
